it's not competition per se but rather the rewards that come from being at the top - the 5Cs that constitute the main stimuli. This leads to students becoming exam-smart (mugging ten-year series and spotting exam questions) rather than truly learning and understanding. This explains why Singapore hasn't produced many great thinkers or scientists, if any.

Thankfully i am from Sabah. I have always dream of having a house in the kampung, rearing pig, chicken, planting vegetables, and sweating a lot, have a recreational house for entertainment, singing, a place for praying and all that. My daughter is 4 and her school is asking me to find another school for her because they say it may not be the right environment for her. Truth is, because my daughter has speech delay hence they dont want to deal with it and constantly ask me to send her for therapy and enrichment. Her speech delay is mainly due to her mother not being able to speak english. My daughter has improved alot but because of the standards here, the school is still complaining and saying she may not be ready for primary school....but she is 4! Back then, we only started school at 4 years old. And now, at 4 you need to be a genius else you will be ostracized. Now im thinking whether or not i should let my child grow up in such high stressed country although this is home...but perhaps not the home i want my child to be in

This is something she has to face regardless of which country she studies in , relocating is not solving the problem . Since your wife is not proficient in English , perhaps she and your daughter can learn together using educational videos , games or enrichment classes . When i see many other kids constantly having to do extra classes just to keep up with the educational level here and also with their peers, i feel that they are missing out on other good parts their childhood could have. So i thought if i could afford to give them an alternative life, why not. There is no right or wrong decision because in every path taken, one can still succeed as long as they are able to bring out their full potential in the area they are passionate about. It doesnt mean you are guaranteed success with the cert in Singapore. Many dont even work in the industry they studied in. Like myself, i did not study what i wanted because my grades did not allow that and i spent years just to complete something i wasnt passionate about but luckily i had the opportunity/support from my family to pursue my passion and succeeded in it. I have a mild autism child and since realising he has speech delays since age 3, my hubby and I proactively seek out treatment for him so that he can enjoy normal life later. Our efforts proved successful as our son improved his eye contact and socialising skills and managed to get a pass from the psychologist who evaluated him to enter a normal public primary school to receive education.

Society is a super competitive and intelligent ecosystem, which leaves no room for those who are lazy, laggards, or incompetent.
Having said that, the economic miracle of Singapore became possible due to its human capital, as it had very little to no natural or mineral resources.
Singapore is a working example of Social Darwinism, where it is the survival of the fittest.

Schools in Finland do not recommend children going to school before age 7 as their brain development is still preparing for structtured learning until that age. Other Asian countries are not as successful as Sg or Japan or even Korea but look at the people who love there, the most genuinely happy and kindest people you’d meet. @@iamfighterman9646 what’s the point in all of that though? Leaving and making the kids later on in life more susceptible to depression and anxiety. This is I still believe in the old adage, “let kids be kids”, because when they are ready to grow and face such things that will be tools for our adult lives then we as parents will just see it. What you resist l, persists. What you accept, transforms.. children learn through playing and emotional bond that parents SHOULD prioritize FIRST in order for our kids to expand their EQ level. it has already been proven time and time again, that people who have higher IQ are the ones who have the highest sui**dal thoughts than those who have higher EQ.
If this is what so many parents want- their kids to be monetarily rich but the saddest, discontent and mentally unstable then I wish them good luck and sending my prayers.
I am a mother of 3 and currently homeschooling, now idk about SG policies about homeschooling but to be honest, homeschooled kids are some of the most well rounded, polite and smart and happiest kids I’ve ever seen. It is one kf those night and day differences you will see compared to traditional “schooled” children. If you don’t work OT, you’re seen as not doing enough. This is prevalent everywhere, big and small companies. And also the nit picking on every minute detail of your work, catching every single mistake and pointing them out to you, or complaining about them to other colleagues. The standards are wildly different especially for mental math and word problems. My children haven’t found it difficult at all, having started at age 3-4. I don’t envy them these social issues, thought quite obviously our country has many of its own, but their elementary math education is the gold standard. The math proficiency of most of our American elementary school teachers is shameful, a result of the cycle of substandard education.

Many parents consider their children's school to be their pride. But these days, many parents manage their academic stress with a stress supplement called Mind Forest. They are children who have a lot of fun, but it breaks my heart to see them face fierce competition from a young age.

Some stress is actually good as an incentive to improve oneself, but too much is bad, so it’s about finding your balance and reducing unnecessary stress. As for the mental health epidemic, we are not alone. Statistics show higher depression rates in the Middle East, N Africa, South Asia and the U.S. than in other regions. Kids' dreams don't matter because at the end of the day, no matter what subjects or specialization is learnt, when he/she goes out to society it is about 1: Whether he/she can find a job, and 2: How much the job pays. This is why you won't find a S'porean spending 6 months in north pole researching penguins and whales. This is why you seldom see a born-and-bred S'porean winning 3rd-1st place in the Olympics. We are good at buying talent from other countries

Some degree of stress is unavoidable, so what’s important is learning how to manage it. Leaving SG may get you a less stressful education system that focuses less on academic excellence, but you may encounter stress of a different sort eg racial discrimination, glass ceilings at work, staying safe in a society with high crime rates, drug and alcohol abuse, gun violence, etc. In short, it’s a pipe dream to think you can live totally stress free. Even if you opt out of the high pressured education system and choose an occupation that needs less education, eg farming or fishing, fishermen and farmers also have stress. Dealing with bad weather that destroys your crops or prevents you going out to fish, diminishing catch from depleted fishing grounds, etc.

What happened to your niece is very sad. Frankly, there are far more career options for young people today than there were 40-50 years ago. There’s also wider acceptance today that academic excellence isn’t the only type of excellence and it’s up to parents to explore with their kids and help them discover what they are good at so they can encourage them to cultivate their strengths. However, parents who try to live vicariously through their kids to force them to achieve what they themselves could not, give the kids unnecessary stress. Far more important to teach them resilience and how to pick themselves up and not give up after a setback. And to remember that they should try to find something they love to do, otherwise work life will be even more stressful. I have friends who didn’t do well academically but went on to become successful businessmen making more money than their classmates who graduated with better degrees. Just remember that even if you don’t ace an exam, it isn’t the end of the world. There are opportunities ahead if you don’t give up and keep trying.

In Singapore, stress have already started at a very young age which is mostly education towards the progression to working life
in my opinion, the education system in some parts not useful or apply in our lives or in future and high standard of education is already stressing out mainly Primary and Secondary school which the syllabus getting more and more tougher years by years. Also don't forget it getting more and more competitive and it is unhealthy in some extends thanks to rigit system.
In conclusion, it is more to study for test or exam than learning by understanding in our daily lives

Stress comes in different forms. Living in a community with a high crime rate, rampant drug abuse, alcohol addictions, racism, gun violence, etc which all threaten one’s personal safety, is also very stressful. Fortunately, we in SG don’t have to deal with this kind of stress, which, unfortunately, is fairly common in the West.

Nah, not just RUclips but diverse respected media sources in the West, plus my own personal observations from traveling extensively. The problems I mentioned may not be an issue for you personally, but I don’t think anyone can say it isn’t true of many western cities in general. Stress is also inevitable if one is homeless, living on the streets, exposed to the elements and criminals, not knowing if you can eat the next meal or afford to see a doctor if ill.

Most of Asian kids have to put themselves under the extreme pressure in education not for their own future, but in fact for the pride of their parents. They forced their children to get the good marks for themselves competing to the other parents. That is a part of their culture.

Well there is stress everywhere. Problem with Singapore is that the speed of change is merciless and the social service system is dysfunctional and distant. Simple example is the change to the transport payment system recently without consultation. It is causing stress but the policymakers are not affected by their own decisions. They are obsessed with fast, regular changes.

In fact Singapore is pretty ok just Singaporeans want to drive themselves that's all. They want to have more , earn more , climb higher, live in a private condo, want car .....etc etc etc...that's why they're so pressured .
If you're earning low income in SG , say 2000 USD a month , you'll get big subsidies from government buying public housing . If you're willing to accept not so mature areas like north side of the city , a flat with 2 bedrooms only costs you around 100K USD after government subsidies . With 35 yrs of mortgage term, you're only paying probably 300 USD a month. In US big cities , this amount money can't even rent you a room already .
So your ""low""" salary of 2000 + 17% employer contribution , after deduct living expenses you can still save money . But if you look at US figures , only 12% of Americans have more than 2000 USD in their saving accounts. So who's pressure is higher , seriously ????
Singaporeans are pretty pampered , to tell the truth . Their basic needs are very covered . Above that if you want more , that's your own desire.
Singapore's main problem is lacking diversity . All ppl are pursuing the same goals : more money , higher rank , private condo, private car ...blah blah blah . You are surrounded by ppl with homogenous view points so most ppl feel their VALUES can not be seen . The point is why don't you chase your own goals rather than those stated above since you want to demonstrate VALUE of your own life ??? So what are you waiting for ? Waiting for all ppl around you stopping chasing money ??? Will that day ever come ?
