      I mean to be fair this has always existed. How do you truly, and I mean truly, rank a 9-3 team with the hardest schedule in the country compared to a 10-2 or 11-1 team with the, lets say, 75th hardest schedule in the country. There just is no real objective way to do it. Those two scenarios simply aren't comparable. And most people are aware of this so that's why you get people "crying" as you put it, which again, has always existed way before the playoffs, it was just numbers in the win/loss columns.

    • @utmastuh

      @@CK-bd8tj that's what the BCS rankings were all about. I preferred those over a biased committee because you can at least look at the numbers and justify an omission. Now it's just "how the team looks" which is subjective and not measurable

    Picking the winner of conferences to enter the playoffs is how mlb, nhl, nfl, nba, and mls all work. They all have conferences with conference champions, and guess what? Some conferences are more stacked than others! But this helps keep fan bases across the nation involved and ensures at least some level of parity is maintained across conferences. College football should be the same.

      @@utmastuh I posted this on another thread:
      There are currently 10 FBS conferences. Can you truly be a national champion if you aren’t your conference champion?
      This can be real simple. Require all conferences have a championship game. The conference champ goes to the playoff. Require independents to join a conference or they eliminate themselves from national contention. This gives you 10 teams. The bottom 4 teams play the first week as play-in games. This gives you 8 teams going into week 2, and a normal sort of bracket. You base that bracket on the final regular season rankings.
      No more controversy of “undeserving” teams being selected and “deserving” teams being snubbed because there is no selection process anymore. Every conference is represented, thus giving every team a chance (unless they stupidly choose to remain independent). You end up with a true champion of champions.
      By making the playoff based on conference championships, you create incentive for top teams to remain in their conferences rather than departing for some monstrous conglomerate. Recreate the Pac 12 and Big 10. Put Notre Dame in the MAC or Midwest conference. You could have a playoff of Army, Miami/Clemson/SMU, BYU/Texas, Indiana/OSU/Penn State, Western Kentucky, Notre Dame, Boise State/Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, and Louisiana. 6 major programs with 4 underdogs that have a decent chance of an upset or two.

      @@Unlitedsoul that sounds fine and dandy until Ohio U makes it out the MAC and loses by 56 to Oregon in the playoff. I think it should be very much the opposite, forget the conferences, take the best 12 teams regardless. Even Miami this year doesn’t deserve to make it let alone have a first round bye. If you make it solely conference based, that means teams like Ohio State, Penn State, Indiana, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, etc. aren’t making it because they don’t win the conference since they’re so stacked.
      Schools flipping conferences isn’t a decision made to have better competition, it’s a decision made based on money. These schools that switched to B10 or SEC did it because they’ll get more tv games and make a ton more money due to the notoriety of the conference

    • @Unlitedsoul
      @Unlitedsoul День назад

      Nonsense. You would have to win your conference. The only way to do that is to finish in a position to go to the conference championship. You do that by having one of the top two in-conference records. Thus making conference games mean even more than they do now. What might get hurt is non-conference games, but that’s where strength of schedule for potential bracket ranking comes in.
      2-3 realistic contenders? In this format you could have Texas, Oregon, Army, SMU, BYU, Ohio, Boise State, Washington State, Louisiana, and Western Kentucky in the playoff. While there are some teams here that would be lower draws than others, even the worst teams on this list are strong enough to carry a solid chance at upsetting the best on the list. You know what is the best way to drive up ratings at halftime is? An underdog with a lead, and there’s plenty of potential for that.
      You know what else this will do? Drive up ratings for the non-power 5 conference championship games. For that matter, all conference championship games will probably get a boost. Those late season conference rival games will probably draw more as well.
      No, the real issue isn’t anything you mention here. The real issue would be putting the Big 10 and Pac 12 back together and getting Notre Dame into a conference. If you do that, then you would probably see either Ohio State or Indiana replacing Washington State (as Oregon would move back to the Pac 12), Tennessee replacing Texas (with BYU at the top of the Big 10), and Notre Dame potentially replacing Ohio, Boise State, or making things more interesting in the Big 10. This strengthening the playoff bracket as a whole and creating 3 stronger conference championship games than we may have with the current alignments.
      And if you make it based on conference championships, you won’t have continual departures of top teams to other conferences. This re-balancing the conferences as a whole.

There is a reason why BYU plays in front of 64,000 at their stadium max and a Penn State plays in-front of 100,000 plus. SMU’s stadium holds about 33,000. That is the simplest easiest way to understand the differences between programs. It’s not a perfect way to explain, but gives a visual. So if all the SEC favorites win out BUT Arkansas upsets Missouri in last regular season game, then it would be Texas vs LSU in the SEC championship. If LSU somehow won the SEC championship game then they’d get an automatic bid into the playoffs with 3 losses and there would be still be 5 two loss SEC teams (Texas, Bama, Georgia, Ole Miss, & Tennessee).
    Who gets left out?
    Bama and Ole Miss beat Georgia.
    Georgia beat Texas and Tennessee
    Tennessee beat Bama.
    So, does Texas get left out being the only team who hasn’t beaten any of the teams tied?

      If Ole Miss/Alabama beat Texas, they and Texas get in. If Texas wins, then it’s probably Texas and whomever between Ole Miss/Bama didn’t go to the championship.

    Friendly reminder for the college championship match two season ago where it was GA vs TCU; TCU was lost one game in OT but then gotten destroyed by Georgia in the championship match. It’s easy to stay undefeated when you don’t play against any ranked teams.
    I say college football playoffs should if it was up to me have it release the official playoffs bracket after thanksgiving rivalry weekend. Right now Indiana is undefeated but thanksgiving weekend will be there first match up of the season against a rank team. Like I know they are good against unranked teams but how are they against a high ranked team.

      You know, I have to agree. This is coming from an Ole Miss alum/fan. Ole Miss just blew out Georgia. Alabama also blew them out, as it only came back to within 10 points after Bama’s backups were put in the game. Georgia hasn’t been playing nearly as well as their ranking (or expectation) and should not be in position for the playoffs. That said, despite being 2 4th down stops from being undefeated, Ole Miss doesn’t deserve to be there either right now. Not as long as there are enough good, 1-loss teams in strong conferences still out there that can fill the bracket. Texas and Tennessee are the only SEC teams that should be in there, right now.

    it doesnt matter with a p4/5 whatever you wanna call it conference anymore so its just the 5 highest ranked conference winners get in and then the remaining top 7 teams essentially get in so depending on where the 5 conference champs are ranked the remaining teams that get in could be anywhere between 1-12 but only 7 of those teams will get in 5 + 7 = 12 if people couldnt understand how i got there I believe the committee is just ranking the teams 1-25 and the bracket is being made out of those rankings so that the matchups are independent of rematch/how well a team travels/media pull all do not have a factor in placement I think this keeps it pretty fair i like the way its set up and it makes it so expansion is easy just add teams and keep the 5 highest champs as auto bids

    No Pat that's dumb. They need to rank the teams and then the format of the bracket will reflect those rankings. So that if a Boise St. wins their conference championship, but Notre Dame and Iowa St have a higher seed, there is evidence of that reasoning. It's like in math class when you had to show your work. The bracket is the answer. The rankings is the committee showing their work. It's not complicated and should not be changed just because some people in Tuscaloosa are confused.

  • @BenChicka
    @BenChicka День назад

    I think the opposite. They should only do the rankings. For those of us who want to analyze positions and create possible outcomes the rankings are a must. If a current conference champ loses their championship position, we need to know where they are dropping from (ie, what rank they are dropping from, not from their top 5 bracket spot)

    I can't believe there are still dudes out there that think the power 4 conferences are guaranteed a spot in the playoff. They aren't. It's a pretty damn good bet, but that's because of how teams get ranked - not because there is anything in the rules about it.

And the Big 10 cant even use the excuse of playing each other, because theyre all trash. But, I do love the chaos and finally having a 12 team playoff just makes it that much more interesting. the ranking (as opposed to the seed) is not useless for teams in the bracket. if we just saw miami was seeded 4 this week, they could be ranked anywhere from 7-13 and we’d have no clue. if byu and osu swapped spots, miami could be ranked 4-13 and we’d have no clue. we’d ask ourselves can miami afford a close loss in the acc title game and still get in and have no clue bc if they were at 4 then ofc they could and jf they’re at 13 then absolutely not. eliminating the ranking and only showing the seed eliminates a huge amount of transparency about the rankings (and we barely have any to begin with). it’s not that hard to understand. regardless, the committee just comes up with a top 25, it’s espn making the bracket on the screen and putting in auto bids for clicks. the committee doesn’t care about auto bids - they don’t really decide them. they’re just ranking the top 25 so that when selection day comes, they can extract the 5 best champs and then the 7 best at larges. simple as that. blame espn for their program if you’re confused
