SURAT THANI, THAILAND - One day for lunch, when we weren’t filming a full street food tour video, I wanted to have a leisure family lunch at an old Thai Chinese food restaurant in Surat Thani, called Soon Hiang Restaurant (ร้านอาหารทะเล ซุ่นเฮียง). #hotpot #Thailand #SuratThani
I loved the look of the old restaurant, with retro and original decor. From the tables to the floor and the decoration, absolutely classic. We had a chance to talk with the owner and chef, from the restaurant's family, who was very friendly and explained that his food was Teochew Chinese style.
Among the Thai Chinese Teochew dishes you can order, just about everyone who eats at Soon Hiang Restaurant (ร้านอาหารทะเล ซุ่นเฮียง) must get the pomfret steamboat (also known as a charcoal hot pot). It was delicious, simple, and I love pomfret - every chance I get to eat it, I love it.
In addition to the pomfret hot pot, what really stood out to me was the sauce used for the fish which was a perfect combination of fermented soy bean sauce, some kind of acidity, and ginger for flavor.

As a Thai-Chinese... that Pomfret streamboat really hit my hungry meter hard..
That type of fish streamboat with taojiew ( fermented bean paste )
is very common among Thai-Chinese family who come from the southern China for 2 generation ago.
That sauce really go well with fresh boiled fish so anyone come here might try looking for old style Thai-Chinese restaurant ( not the laxury one in hotel as those are mainstream Chinese dish like Dimsum )
Imagine finding a person like Mark, so positive, so charismatic, he sees the beautiful in everything, I’d be falling so hard for him haha 💜

The best dishes are often clean simple ones with fresh ingredients. Seeing this video makes me want to show it to my 85 year old father born in Canton China, he owned a restaurant for 18 years called Ling Ling Chinese Gourmet in Cocoa Beach FL. I love how the owner/Uncle was so proud and humble.

I love fermented beans. I usually make it with birds eye chilli and garlic, roasted tomatoes. Crush them all and add fermented beans, salt to taste. Tasty 😋
