I dont have tools haha
Got to do the harbor frights next
My father in law told me when it comes to clamps they can be expensive to buy tons of them all at once so what you do is either every paycheck or every time you go to a store like home depot/harbor freight etc... you buy a clamp or two even if you don't need them at that time. Over the course of a year two you will eventually have enough clamps to serve in any capacity without breaking the bank.
Ace is the place, or Maynards
Definitely need to do this at harbor freight next
I sent a friend of mine $100 tool bag from harbor freight for a housewarming gift. It’s 100% of what most new homeowners will need to do some small maintenance and projects. Highly recommend doing it
for the $100 budget especially
Exactly! Going to HD or Lowes for first time tools? Madness...
Harbor freight is perfect for homeowner diy on a budget. For $100 you could definitely do better than they did in this video.
100% agree!!!!
Harbor freight would’ve been a better choice for a general homeowner toolkit.
It would be, but it wouldn't be as fun to watch.
Exactly
Especially with a $100 limit. Agreed.
Well sure but thats probably an other planned video
Walmart
$100 at Harbor Freight gets you item# 64263 and item# 64755. Which is a 130 piece homeowner hand tool set, and a 20 volt Bauer impact driver/battery/charger combo.
That's a perfect starting set.
Man, with the SKUs… that’s legendary lol
@@thefrankperspective4247 I spend a lot of time at Harbor Freight and on their app. 😅
Meh, not so much the impact driver. If someone is starting with nothing, the impact driver merely speeds work up, doesn't really enable doing anything more except "maybe" drilling holes if a hex shank drill set was included, and if the benefit is just drilling holes then might as well make it one of their $10 special corded drills. Even then, meh no, save the money and pick that up at a garage sale or pawn shop later, as the idea that everything needs to come from the same store makes no sense in reality.
@@stinkycheese804 Let's start with the end. Nobody ever said you had to buy everything from one store, or even suggested that you should. They had a video idea and went with it, one store makes filming easier. I used one store as an alternative, again, because of ease.
Now that we've addressed that...
An impact driver can be used for automotive work as well as general around the house work. Which objectively makes it the better choice given how close in price drills and impact drivers are these days.
@@theindooroutdoorsman When I moved into my first apartment, I’d put together a modest little hand tool kit, but almost immediately realized I needed the impact driver for so many purposes. I get why people would consider it more of a “next step” purchase (beyond a basic, all around tool kit), but it really is crucial even just for starting out.
I love this challenge, it's really fun to watch. My idea is a second wheel with different stores - Home Depot, Lowe's, Harbor Freight, Ace,, Walmart, etc. Then spin both, category and store, and run with it.
Not a bad idea
Nice twist!
lol. They should have to build something with it to.
Great idea and have John vs an Expert in that field (plumber, electrician, GC etc.)
That's a fun idea at face value, until you start thinking about quality at stores like Walmart and harbor freight (I mean that guy picked a winner based off quality). Yeah harbor freight has a "higher end" line but if they're trying to fit a bunch of tools in a budget, they might not be picking those.
Harbor Freight. Even/odd aisles only. $100. 30 mins. Opposing contestants can “delete” one item from each others purchases.
Great video, love my Sunday mornings w Yinz
We definitely need more videos with some spotlight on Sam. Who knew the kid had such charisma. 🤙🏻🤙🏻
came to the comments to see if anyone else thought so too. put more of this side of sam into main channel videos!
Sam won easy. Phillips #2. Solid flat head. Hammer. Crescent. Channel locks. It’s about as basic as you get. Everything after that is extra.
I'd add a saw too. And a level.
I wouldn’t worry about a saw. A saw infers that you are building something. A basic tool kit is just for repairs. A hacksaw on the other hand would have been a great idea for plumbing repairs.
@@johngraves9201I was thinking the same thing. Additionally, it’s not a completion to find the only tools he will every own, it’s just a start. If in a year he is building a shed, he’ll likely buy some more tools. Then, if his door is rubbing, he will go to the store and by sand paper etc…
A multimeter, a tape measure.
you have to have a good socket set, metric and standard, with so many furniture items being flat pack assemblies that come loose over time and need tightening.
TLDR all the comments, but did anybody mention the editing tool used to increase Chris' left arm size, right after the spin? The man is already a monster, but to make him look like the Hulk is insanely funny. Keep up the good work guys.
It'd be interesting to see Wal-Mart as the location for the next challenge. I bring this up because some remote places in the US don't have a readily available HD or Lowes.
As a sub contractor, channellocks are one of the most commonly used pliers for me. Homeowners like messing up plumbing and what better universal tool then channellocks.
As a homeowner who doesn't want to call a plumber for cleaning a drain, I agree. Extremely important tool. Also can't be replaced by any other tool. And can serve as a wrench when you once again can't find your adjustable wrench.
You need to give the guy a respectable set and up it to $500. $100 is a slap in the face.
What they're trying to do, that anvil kit is exactly designed to fulfill. That kit plus box miter saw kit plus hacksaw and you cover most of what a homeowner needs for basic maintenance.
I think Sam's single-use tool comment is spot on. I tried one of those all in one kits when I was a new home owner and the screwdriver was rounded off in a few months and the hammerhead was loose. I suck at home repair and DIY and even I had replaced every tool in there within 3 years.
@@ecoKady
It's a starter kit. It's also an indicator of what tools you need to invest for longevity. New homeowners may not know this yet. I think $100 is I very low, especially with inflation, and this is the level of quality you can expect with $100 compared to what I spent on my first set of framing tools, and that cost over $100 for belt and hand tools. A coworker went to harbor freight first, spent under $100, and had to replace his framing hammer, tape measure, and speed square after a month and his bags were fraying. Never had to replace any of my tools because they broke from regular use, it's because they fell into places I couldn't get them (Screwdrivers, drill bits, punches, a chisel) or I dropped it off a ladder (my favorite tape measure).
Yea I definitely would have gotten that
Worth carving some budget out for a stud finder.
Yes! Also anchor kit.
doesn't always work, but a decently strong magnet will find the screw and you can approximate pretty well from there.
YES! Very true.
@@linnoff yea this. i find stud finders so unreliable as to be useless. But i have a stack of magnets i use to find the drywall screws and it works 100% of the time
I did something like this last year for my buddy for Christmas, but car focused & Harbor Freight. Tool bag, socket set, plier set, screwdrivers, carpet knife, jumper cables, flashlight, emergency LED triangle, Allen keys. Built the car kits for my wife & my cars years ago. Was on a road trip to palm springs & didn't take into account BMW uses torx for everything so when a window regulator broke on the road I hadda add a set of torx sockets from Autozone. Glad I kept the tool bag in my car for the trip though! Over budget but handy is a jump pack and tire inflator. This kit should be in every car.
I could hear Sam talk all day. His voice and the pace he talks at is calming and chill AF.
I got a 56 piece gearwrench ratcheting screwdriver set for $35 and a craftsman bolt-on drill with a few heads for about $150. They have reliably knocked out every basic thing around the house for well over a decade
Yeah I can appreciate those being good to do something like taking the trap off your kitchen sink or caulking a window. ;)
Field trip video!!!! Yay!!! Go John and team. Love the creativity
Can't wait for the rest of the series!!
Quite hard to buy tools for a particular person's skill set. I've been a home owner for 50 years and I still find that I've not got a tool for a specific job. It was interesting seeing John's and Sam's logic process, I honestly think it was a close, really close, decision. Good post, thank you 👍
Need to see this with all the other categories as well!
Walmart had a good kit for 40 bucks I got for my ex wife she was moving to her own apartment and had no tools at all so she needed a good variety so yeah it worked out well
I bought a tool kit at Aldi for $20. Came with a hammer, Allen wrench set, 20 bits, a screwdriver, 2 clamps, adjustable wrench, pliers, needle nose pliers, drywall spatula, 5 mini screw drivers, tape measure, 10in stick level & a small case that came with some screws, hook screws and screw anchors. None of the tools are top notch but they make a great back up set or temporary starter kit.
The fact that he talked to a fan for 7 minutes is pretty nice
I LOVE the random shopshade plugs, and I am staying tuned for the release of the prescription model!
This was super fun. Want to see more.
Hi! Please make this in to a short series! Great fun watching and learning how you think about the different tools n so on 👍
Damn Sam is really good on camera. Hadn't really seen him before. He is a cool operator. Sam's purchases were a lot better than John's.
Need more videos of this series!
I see a lot of harbor freight comments but the best deals are around Christmas at Lowe’s/home depot. Basic hand power tools (battery power) kits a little over 100 for drill, impact, sawzaw, circular saw, light and 2 batteries.
In the home depot segment I was thinking what's wrong with John. He doesn't look OK. Then the puts on the shop shades. And that was it! 😅 So used to those being on that face
Wheel was nice touch for first challenge. Hope you make more videos for each category. New category idea, Storage and/or Tool storage.
I like seeing people think outside of the "box" ( big box stores), Why not Support the local small family stores? Your local Ace or True Value, every community has one. Then there are tractor supplies, Menards, Fleet Farms ect
As a midwesterner living in the south I cannot express how much I miss Menards and more specifically fleet farm. Talking to my dad yesterday and said the exact thing.
Those places are more expensive
We need more of this!
Loved this! Do more! Def have to do a Harbor Freight, and Lowes ep. Also maybe 2nd hand store??
I have that same stubby tool kit in my truck and use it all the time... it is great for the price
I went to Pittsburgh once. My touring Punk band played in a club that was in an actual junk/scrap yard. It was Super. Glad it did not smell too bad.
Walmart or Harbor Freight are more budget friendly for first time home owners.
This series is awesome! Keep it up
The caulking gun is actually very useful as part of a kit...more of sealing things up more easily for quick repair work
I've been getting the free tools from harbor freight for my kids. I figured by time they need them they should have a ok set
Channel locks (or similar) should always be #1 - it's an adjustable wrench, pliers, nail puller, and hammer all in one.
After that: 11-in-1 Klein screwdriver, hammer, utility knife, hacksaw, measuring tape, and wire stripper/cutter.
Sam blew this out the water!
love these videos, john
So neither thought of buying a stud finder and a level? Animals I tell ya 😂
The combination square Sam got has a level in it
John really messed this one up, lol. When Sam found out he had extra budget he shoulda sprung for a drill, just to rub it in. The screwdriver with multiple bits is off the charts useful!
That was fun. I think it would be awesome to set the store for the category before choosing the category. Might I suggest Wal-Mart for the plumbing or the electrical - that would be hilarious!
This was awesome. I couldn't help but try to make my own list. I think I came up with a pretty solid list.
came to 99.53 before tax
duct tape, wd-40, retractable utility knife, stanley multi-bit ratcheting screwdriver, 7pc precision screwdriver set, stanley 3pc pliers/needle nose/clippers, crescent wrench, locking pliers, wire strippers, 16' stanley tape, stanley 16oz claw hammer, stanley 12" combination square, 10" hacksaw
That was a fun challenge. I enjoyed it. Nice watch.
Go to Harbor Freight for the next addition
Great episode!
Being on west coast, it’s weird seeing plastic bags haha
Harbor freight. Just the tool tiering there will make it way more interesting
John's kit has the stuff you forget you need after you buy the basics. Can't go wrong either way!
Those little Milwaukee tape measurers are great. The units line up perfectly with my woodpeckers rulers. I have a bunch of them peppered around my garage wood shop so they’re always within reach.
Harbor freight is pretty much the best place to go when working on budgets like this or goodwill/value village/habitat store. Instead of a tight time limit it would be interesting if you did 150 bucks to build the best tool kit possible. Hit up garage sales, craigslist, marketplace etc. Maybe do like a 3 day time limit to give time to organize pickups etc.
I haven't sat through a twenty something minutes youtube video since forever. Short attention span from social media, reels and shorts. But I watched this whole thing without getting distracted. Great job guys, it was fun :)
I LOVE this challenge idea. You gotta do the next one at Lowe’s. And then switch back & forth. Except for the last two. The seventh do at Harbor Freight. And the last one at Target.
Plz do alot more videos of challenges like this
Loved this video, and Sam’s whole segment from start to finish was a cracking me up 😂
I think I need to fly over to the US and be let loose in Home Depot or Lowes. Then fly back over and test against Parkside 😂
Parkside kit is amazing 👌 no way are the screwdrivers deserving to be that good for the price... Yet they are!! Blooming brilliant 👍
@@mrblackrock555 Absolutely, some Parkside tools, mostly Performance line are such good value for money!
@@BrokeLifeEU I've never tried their performance stuff. We don't seem to get it in England and I really wanna try it!
@@mrblackrock555 I still have no idea why Parkside is not widely available in Lidl UK stores. At least some Ferrex tools appear from time to time, albeit a limited selection.
@@BrokeLifeEU Its getting better but not that great, I do really like their tools though, use the drills all the time at work and theyre doing great!, 3/8 electric ratchet works great most of the time.
Not seen ferrex tools in my local lidl yet
The general tools for john in the beginning should have gone with an electric screwdriver and the hex mount drill bits hahahaha
Love this. Would be cool as a series and starters for professions. Often times as a homeowner you don’t need it all and a quick $100 budget for each would be really cool. Also include some of the more outside ones like landscaper
First time homeowner: Socket set, only if you're working on your cars too. I owned some medium duty trucks and did as much maintenance on my own as I could before I owned my first home. I kept my (giant) socket sets. I rarely use them in the house. Maybe some woodworking, but not needed for a first time home owner.
Even though i know youre in the area, it still trips me out that this is thr Home Depot i go to too haha
Im less excited about it being Pixburgh Stiller who's a fellow shopper, and more that a woodworking youtuber i love to watch is 😂
Watching the main channel vids is a good factor in me trying to revamp my basement wood shop
I'm happy to see we're continuing the "be extra nice to Sam" series
Im glad Sam chose to put back the the slip joint for channel locks. But for sure Lowe’s or Harbor Freight.
5 star dinner, proceeds to show primanti bros sandwich haha. Love it
That cart narcks reference was amazing
Love these videos.
That's such a smarter spot for in-built garage buttons. My Tundra (and Highlander when I had it) has them on the mirror so you f up your mirror position every time you open the garage. NEAT... To the point I stopped using it and just use my garage door opener. Genie has gotten really small with their openers that it's not a bother. I even have one on my keychain since it's smaller than the Toyota FOB.
Harbor freight for sure, or even northern tools
The Cart Narc reference had me cracking up! His videos are hilarious
This series has legs! Great idea and the perfect mix of folks to play through it! Congrats to this one's winner (no spoilers)
I don't' think the time element adds anything. I'd rather hear your considered opinions. Because I want to hear the what professionals would pick. Not rushed ones.
Pro tip, do not ever buy crazy glue in those small bottles,90% of the price is for packaging. Buy CA glue with the activator can, you get 3x more glue and an activator for like $2 more
How much does the crazy glue cost where u live?
@@peterschoemaker9 Normally like $10 CDNf or those bottles he showed in the video. and for $14 you can get the CA with activator and you get like 120ml of CA glue vs 30mils it seems in those small tubes
@@steve_main what is cdnf? I am not from the united states haha
@@peterschoemaker9 Sorry meant to say CDN as in Canadian dollars
@@steve_main okay, so its 7,30 in us dollars. Is it the Krazy glue of 0.07 OZ? Because that one costs like $2 here
Harbor Freight has a lot of low budget goodies. Fun video and it's good to see you being good to the fan.
Idk if that was a Paramore line but loved the little ‘running out of time’ vocal lmaooo
I have used the same plastic speed square for years and prefer it to my metal ones >bright green easy to find lol
The combination square. Totally agree with Sam
Id love to see the same challange but done with second hand tools like yard sales and FB marketplace, you really cant beat the value you get there!
Doing home repairs and subbing cuz u guys are awesome! Can’t wait to see you build something lol
You should do a random store like Walmart that will definitely your creative juices flowing
11:02 Ford Fu**in Ranger! Love it
Good Video, really enjoyed it. Hurray for SAM (Grin).
Looking forward to your next challenge.
Good luck with the home Depot app. It works perfectly everywhere but inside the store you can have full bars on your phone. You walk in that store, try and use their app. Boom never works. I don't know what it is with them and I hate to say it. The Lowe's one does the same thing works great. Then you go in the store. Forget that thing working
It’s the construction of the buildings and all the different materials inside the store.
works great on their free wifi inside both big box stores
you should have 1 guy buy all their stuff from home depot and the other do harbor frieght for the competition
that would of been immensely unfair...he would of been able to get just about everything you would need at HF for that same money....electric drill, saw, and so much more.
I'm new to this channel and i love this channel!😊
You gotta do Amazon hundred bucks for mechanical category and temu for the wood working that'd be hilarious 😂👍🏴
Same challenge, Harbor freight, use the tools to see how they last vs the Home Depot tools.
How many decades do you have to spare for that test? I have some tools older than my father was when he passed away of old age.
Hands down channel locks are a number one tool for a new homeowner. Just think about hooking up a washer and dryer.
Tools are so cheap over there. Some of those identical tools are twice the price in the UK.
I just came here to say I wanted to say I bought the compact mini screwdriver simply because Sam said it was a great idea. Next time do a harbor freight shopping list for the DIYer!
Your best bet for homeowner tools on a budget are garage sales or Craigslist/FB-Marketplace. Buying new tools is for desperate situations.
Feels like John didnt even think what to get before he went into the store…. Sam actually thought it through really well
Harbor Freight is a must!! One thing that I thought about...what about a good extension cord? Even a 25'er would come in handy. Or a small shop vac!
Good stuff guys.
That was fun!
Maybe not within the rules of this game, but the homeowner kits are great! My husband laughed at my girly little kit, but its small enough to keep in the kitchen, and the tools aren't burly but they're enough for 90% of the quick fixes and installs. (Bonus: there's a designated spot for each item, so its easy to see if something is missing and track down the last person who used it.)
Some “store” options for future category shopping sprees; Thrift/second hand store(s), garage sales, flea markets.
What about doing a flea market tool challenge?
