Hace aproximadamente 1,5 años terminé mi Camino de Santiago, caminando 2,5 meses desde Burdeos a Fisterae. Cruzar las montañas hacia Galicia fue como si alguien activara un interruptor. El campo exuberante y verde, la gente cálida y acogedora, y la comida y la música es algo que simplemente tiene que experimentar usted mismo. Larga historia corta, nunca más me fui. Conocí a una chica, y después de enamorarme de mi chica, me enamoré del país, la gente y todo lo que es Galicia. Ahora estoy en el proceso de emigrar oficialmente de los Países Bajos a Galicia. He visto mucha España antes de mi camino, pero Galicia no se parece en nada a España. No se ven en español, no hablan español ni actúan en español. Las gaitas son solo un pequeño ejemplo de eso. Antes de conocer la historia, me sorprendió mucho escuchar gaitas en España, pero una vez que estás allí por un tiempo, te das cuenta de que las gaitas son parte de este país (Galicia), su herencia, su cultura y su orgullo. El clima puede verse como "malo", la economía está lejos de ser fuerte, y toda Galicia parece un poco estancada en el tiempo, pero para mí, eso es simplemente perfecto y espero que Galicia nunca pierda su identidad.
editar para agregar: Incluso tengo una banda favorita ahora, "Os Coribantes" de Ponte Caldelas, lamentablemente casi no tienen nada en línea.

Es imposible describir lo que se siente al escuchar esta música. No se absolutamente nada de música y no se tocar ningún instrumento musical. No soy gallego ni celta, pero creo que no es necesario serlo para volar con esto. Lo único que se es que escucho la música de gaita y el alma se me llena. Arte puro, arte vivo.

In the tunnel leading to the right of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela there is one of the most amazing gaiteiros I've ever seen. You walk through that tunnel with the Gaita and you look left still hearing the Beautiful sound and you see the most Beautiful Cathedral and probably the Catholic equivalent of Mecca towering over you. You guys have to experience it.
Dear friend, just a small lesson of history: most of Hispania was populated by the celts in ancient times and, although their origin is indo-European, but they migrated and settled in several regions of Europe. Therefore the celts in Spain WERE Hispanic (or what today you can name Spanish or Spaniards), because they WERE part of Hispania.

The Spanish Celts migrated from the north of Spain to France to Britain on the ice age, so that is the reason that most of the English people have DNA from the Iberian peninsula.

The Bag Pipes go as far back to ancient Egypt along with the Kilt, both made their way into North Africa where they are currently in use till this day, up into Southern Europe (before Mohammedans) and finally into the Scotland and Ireland.

Nunca había escuchado la gaita de esa forma. Me llama mucho la atención un sonido que parece lo que en los instrumentos de cuerda se denomina un "ligado". Es decir que pasa de una nota a otra pero suavemente, casi como un "arrastre" o "slide". Imagino que lograr ese tipo de sonido con un instrumento de viento de esas características (no como el trombón que puede permitir ese cambio de notas fácilmente) debe ser algo difícil. Pero además me gustó mucho la melodía. No la conocía. Estuve buscando videos de gaiteros de Irlanda y Escocia porque me gusta mucho esa música, pero al buscar gaiteros de Galicia me encuentro con este excepcional video. Gracias por compartirlo! El sonido natural de la gaita es ése, ya que se ve obligada a tocar en ligato porque el aire que llega a los tubos sonoros no es controlable voluntariamente desde los pulmones del gaitero, sino que sale continuamente de la bolsa de cuero parecida a una bota de vino que es preciso hinchar previamente. Por eso el músico se ve obligado a ejercer diversos trucos para engañar al oído cuando de lo que se trata es de repetir la misma nota en lugar de alargarla. Estos trucos se realizan con los dedos sobre los agujeros del "punteiro" (tubo de la gaita en el que se toca la música), y son principalmente dos: el "picado" y el "batemento". El "picado" consiste en levantar y bajar rápidamente un dedo de los que están cubriendo agujeros mientras suena la nota, lo cual produce la sensación de que la misma nota se ha tocado dos veces seguidas con una separación por el medio; el "batemento" o "martilleo" consiste en lo contrario; es decir, "pisar" también muy rápidamente con un dedo el primer agujero destapado por debajo de todos los que están haciendo sonar la nota.
Por el contrario es posible lograr efectos de "staccato" con la gaita; pero en este sentido, debido a su constitución, este precioso instrumento es muy limitado y lo poco que se consigue exige del gaitero una gran destreza. Por esto, en todo tipo de gaitas se utiliza en muy raras ocasiones y el repertorio tradicional se abstiene de él, ya que lo normal y corriente en otros tiempos era no poder disfrutar de las gaitas tan bien construidas, afinadas y precisas como se hacen hoy gracias a la gran formación de los constructores y sobre todo la mayor precisión de las herramientas con las que trabajan. Si hoy son extremadamente difíciles, los "staccati" eran en tiempos literalmente imposibles para la mayoría de los gaiteros, por muy buenos que fueran.

Esto también explica el por qué muchas de sus melodías -sino la mayoría- tienen notas más bien largas, o al menos es lo que al mundo se muestra como melodías clásicas de gaita. Sin duda que los "stacatti" son excelentes al oído, pero encuentro las melodías largas también muy disfrutables.
De nada. Toco la gaita como simple afición. Si te fijas este hombre hace los batementos utilizando varios dedos a la vez; esto es típico de la zona de Curtis, en la comarca de Betanzos, unos cuarenta kilómetros al norte de Santiago. Si fuera un viejo habría una probabilidad alta de que fuera de allí; aunque tratándose de un joven como éste, puede haberlo aprendido de un maestro o visto en otro; incluso en esto se nota la "globalización"; ya no hay tanta precisión como antaño ubicando a la gente. Sin ebargo, he notado que la gaita gallega tiene un sonido especial ya no sólo por e timbre, si no también por que tiene el 3° grado ligeramente desafinado hacia abajo.

Thank you all for all the comments - I'm glad so many of you enjoyed the video and the great sound of the "gaita Gallega". As for the Spaniards or Celts debate, I'm not a historian. I used the words at the beginning of the video from some research I did on the internet. Surely, whatever the facts are, there will be strong opinions from both sides of the fence. This video is merely about the music and the rich tradition the bagpipe has in Galicia, Spain. Let's let it be about that, yes? Cheers...
+Dan Perez This gaitero looks like Jose Gonsalez, is that who it is? You should identify the artist. Also you should cut out the little commentary blurbs, first they are not really historically accurate and second, who cares? Obviously people come here to hear gaita music, so you wouldn't telling them anything even if it were factually correct. But thank you for recording this performance and posting it.

It's a nicely produced video, I just get annoyed by the constant assertion that there is something specifically "Celtic" about bagpipes, there isn't.There are over 100 types of bagpipe played from Sweden to North Africa and from Ireland to Armenia. Very few of them are even incidentally connected to anything "Celtic". The bagpipe is the official national folk instrument of of Bulgaria, for example. Go to Bulgaria and tell them their playing a "Celtic" instrument, and maybe Bulgarians settled in Ireland in the mythic past. Never mind the fact that the Irish bagpipe is probably a modification of the French Baroque chamber-music bagpipes of the 17th and 18th Centuries. Research was a little lacking in your comments, which you have to be careful of if you want to put your work on RUclips where pedantic trolls like me will jump all over you. In the end, nice camera work and editing, and I think it is Jose Gonsalez. Thank you.

Why you do not enjoy the music.....is soo...daunting....I lived in USA for the past 50 yrs but every time I hear a gaita....my eyes water....a muneira....(jota gallega?.....in the hill towns of El Bierzo back in the early 50s during the dances of the holidays some time during the noght , a time was allocated for the orchestras to play the old folks music....jotas (?)...I remember that well and we NEVER got into the...whether the gallegos were celtas or whaever....poisoning the moment....I know many gallegos who resemble afrikans and many who resemble vikings ...in Sapain the blood after all these yrs, the blood is so mingled that not even their mother would recognize us....
The makers of these videos suffer fm a huge inferiority complex that have to remind themselves that they are not what they seem....and after the video they all go back to being just gallegos ....the most pejorative adjetive in the spanish lingo.....ask the south amerikans....jejeje

¿Hay algún diseño específico o entonación / afinación de la gaita gallega cuyo sonido la haga asemejarse al timbre más grave que da la gaita irlandesa o "uilleann pipes"?
La gaita escocesa tiene su sonido más dulce, ligero, pero la gaita gallega tiene ese no se que que me encanta ♡
¿No será al revés? La Great Highland Bagpipe (la gaita escocesa que se ve en las películas y que acompaña a la fanfarria militar) es un instrumento considerado también como arma en los siglos XVI y XVII por su sonido potente que acompañaba a los combatientes en el campo de batalla en las tierras altas y posteriormente en el siglo XIX los regimientos escoceses del ejército británico (The Blackwatch) incorporaron la gaita como instrumento propio, llevándola de nuevo a los campos de batalla en la India y África, sobre todo, en las guerras coloniales. La gaita gallega por contra tiene un sonido más dulce, porque aunque hay gaitas con puntero en SIb (Si bemol) con un sonido más potente, la mayoría de gaiteros tocan con un puntero en Do, que viene mejor para tocar las piezas que se suelen tocar: pasodobles, muñeiras, pasacalles, jotas y boleros. La gaita escocesa tiene el puntero en SIb y a diferencia de la gaita gallega tanto las cañas del puntero (chanter reeds, en la gaita gallega sería la palleta)) como los pallones (drone reeds) suelen tener un tamaño estándard y ser compatibles los de un fabricante para cualquier gaita, cosa que no ocurre con la gaita gallega, donde unos punteros van mejor con palletas de la Escuela Seivane y otros con palletas de la Escuela Corral, igual que los pallones, los hay en Do, Sib, y los del ronquete y ronquillo, con su diferente tonalidad. Vamos, que es un mundo y cuando te sumerges en el mundo de la gaita ves que nada es tan fácil como aparenta y que las similitudes entre una gaita escocesa y una gallega se acaban en la forma, porque son instrumentos totalmente distintos. Yo toco ambos, y como me he tenido que pelear con los dos, sé de lo que hablo. Y sé perfectamente que los celtas nunca tocaron las gaitas y que la difusión del instrumento llega con la Edad Media y no se puede descartar que a Galicia y Asturias llegase de Francia siguiendo el Camino de Santiago, dada la similitud de las gaitas actuales en forma, digitación y factura con las que aparecen en grabados y tallas. Tienen un aire muy medieval.

This goes to people constantly going on about older studies regarding Brits being mainly of Spanish descent:
Bryan Syke's study has been debunked. I could literally wipe my arse with Bryan Sykes papers as his research failed to understand that the R1b haplogroup has many variants. In fact, even more recent DNA studies by Ancestry.com have concluded that the Average English person is around 40% Anglo Saxon 10% Scandinavian 20% Celtic (Irish/Scot/Welsh) and around 20% German/French. In fact most English men carry Germanic haplogroups such as R1b-U106 (known as the Frisian gene) and l1 which peaks in Scandinavia but is also present in a lot of Dutch, English and German men. Even some Scots carry that gene.
This is not to say that Scotland/Ireland and Wales aren't Celtic, but even Wales and Scotland show up as the average person having up to 20-30% Anglo-Saxon with other admixtures. Yes the Celtic element is the strongest but one cannot deny that Bryan Sykes jumped the gun with his conclusions. British people are not Spaniards.

The Galicians have always been Celtic old way modern, so the rest of Spanish call them fools, because the rest of Spain is proud to have been Roman, but Galicia is proud to have been spiritually remain Celtic, and they are related with their ancestors and also with the other Celtic nations. His Celtic language no longer exists but is being recovered, we talk about the first Gaelic language history and the oldest of all Celtic culture, even the word Galicia or Galiza means land of the Gaels.

If you were a true historian you would speak of facts, but not of feelings or invented spiritualities or supposed insults to Galician people.
The fact is that the typical Celtic constructions are rectangular unlike the circular constructions of the castro culture in Galicia.
The fact is that Celtic place-names are frequent not only in Galicia, but also in all the Cantabrian zone, Castile, Aragon, and Extremadura. There was even a large area in the southwest of the peninsula were a tribe called "celti" lived.
The fact is that archaeological evidence shows a mixture of Celtic and pre-Celtic populations in Galicia, suggesting that this area was being celtified by tribes coming from what nowdays is Castile when the Romans arrived in the peninsula.

You said that the celtic language of Galicia is being recovered... The fact is that we only have a bunch of words and small expressions that survived in small inscriptions (in this sense, the situation of the celtic galicean language is way worse than that of the celtiberian). The Celtic League is not to recovering a language that died 2000 y. ago, rather it is CREATING a bizarre pastiche with living Celtic languages, Galician phonetics and the handful of words, toponyms and theonyms that Galician can bring.

Not Spaniards but Celts? I highly recommend you read a bit more about the History of Spain, basically about the pre-Roman period.

Spaniard means a mix of a few old cultures including Romans, West Gothans and other. To say Celt is to say Spaniard as well.
Maybe, the oldest bagpipe was Spaniard.

Firstly of all there were a lot of different Celtic tribes throughout the Iberian Peninsula and not only in what is today Galicia.
Secondly, Hispania is the Latin name for the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans.
Current English word Spain derived from the Latin word Hispania which was the name for the whole Peninsula as said before.

It does not matter whether they were Celtics, Basques, Iberians, Greek living in the Iberian Peninsula they were all from Hispania.
Spain is a modern country and a modern concept and there were not "Spaniards" at that time but a bunch of different people and cultures living in the same Peninsula.

This video tells us that galicians are suposed to be celts and not spaniards, but the truth is that Spain has been always a deep Celtic country, as half of the iberian península was inhabitated by celts even before the roman conquest, thats where the adjective celtiberian comes from.
