I love that you mentioned that you do laundry in your trip. I have the feeling that some people seem to forget that sinks or washing machines exist when they go on a trip. They go somewhere for a week, two, three, whatever and bring a different outfit for every single day. To each their own but I keep thinking about how expensive and heavy it is to bring more stuff and how annoying it is to carry it all :D
Bahhh, that sucks. No chance of doing the paperwork with the government to bring it in? (I forget what it’s called) - I’ve heard that can sometimes get some restricted things in for tourists
Also, since I just had to check for steroids for allergies - up to a month supply of most medications should be ok to bring - there is a list of restricted ingredients on the ministry of health and welfares website, but in most cases, you should be able to fill out the yunyu kakunin-sho and be able to bring a month supply. If you bring the list of ingredients that are banned to your psychiatrist, hopefully they can prescribe a medication that is legal in Japan for a one month supply
@@kawaiijutsu No, they are illegal. If you try to bring them in, even with paper work, you will not be allowed in the country and may even be deported. When you travel to other countries, "I didn't know" is not an excuse.
This is so refreshing, I love that you don't sacrifice quality (that kanken, they legit last your lifetime it's insane) or your comfort by still carrying things important to you, but also not in excess by packing too much. Whenever I see 'minimalist' packing videos they're almost always full of crazy expensive luggage and overpriced amenities. To each their own of course, and if you can afford it then why not, but as someone that fits the vast majority of not being able to afford it, it makes it much less relatable lol. Instant follow, you're chill and I dig your packing style.
Thanks for the video! I'm doing my first backpack-only trip to Japan this summer and have been watching a lot of one-bag travel videos. However, a lot of them are for hikers, men, influencers, people who don't use skincare, etc... I'm just a normal indoorsy geek girl who wants to spend most of my time eating lol.
Bwahahaha that is exactly my kinda vibe and goal (I spent some time in net cafes on this trip playing games with friends back home haha). Glad this could help!
Haha I think underwear is where I always allow myself extra “just in case” ones lol. I always tell myself though that it’s Japan - if I need it, I can get it pretty cheap pretty quickly. In winter, I have had to bring a larger backpack, just because the clothes are bulkier. Or I’ll use a carry on suitcase and plan to not move around as much and keep it more of a work focused trip. I figure most people do their Japan trips in the summer, so this would be the more useful one to show.
Way back in the day you used to vlog about your time in the JET Programme and I watched and learned. Just a week ago I moved to Japan for the first time into my first Eikaiwa job. Thank you for the years advice, tips and tricks :)
@@kawaiijutsuThis comment section is a little too public for me to say but I’ll say it’s not a major city which personally I love since I don’t get treated like a tourist all the time aha. By the way, you mentioned finding deodorant was tough in Japan and I’ve definitely inclined to agree. Any tips on where to look to find it more easily?
@@Drapperbat haha that’s fair, my apologies, especially if it’s a smaller one! I really liked living in a smaller town too - I could still get somewhere if I needed to get something (or just order it online), but things were less crowded and just more peaceful. For deodorant, sadly no :( I’d ask someone on the military base to set aside like 5 sticks of it whenever I’d go down there, or order it from overseas. In the winter I could use Japanese stuff without an issue, but I sweat too much for it in the summer. :(
If anyone is looking for a travel bag, I recommend Nordace. I’ve travelled backpack only with it a few times internationally and I can’t recommend it enough! I’ve got the eclat but they have different styles. Hope it’s helpful ❤
Kinda late to the party, but Kai had a nightmare and this popped up in my feed! Love this video and getting to hear your humor 😆 Renews my desire to go to Japan even more! Your packing is unmatched 🤯
I hope you can! I go back to Japan about once a year now for work, so figure I’ll record some footage each time I’m there and make videos. So not constant uploads, but as I can make them!
Thanks for the fantastic video and tips! This video came up on my feed while looking for "packing for Japan" videos, and I really enjoyed your clear presentation style. :) Also this is off-topic from this video, but from glancing at your channel, I wonder if you have any advice about transitioning back to the US after living and working in Japan? My partner has been doing JET for a few years, and will be moving back to the US later this year, so I'm curious on your insights about how that went for you. Thanks!
Yay!! I’m glad it’s coming up in searches! I tried to make it as direct and concise as possible haha. As far as returning to the states, the hardest things for me to adjust to were health insurance being so awful, and things just feeling…more rushed? For lack of a better word? Like no more reading and chilling on the commute to work - gotta deal with traffic. Gotta drive everywhere, gotta be on your phone all the time to respond to work messages, etc. I like plenty of things about living in the states, but I definitely miss things about Japan too. On the upshot, my time in Japan seems to have made me more conscious of other peoples feelings and needs to the point I get complimented on it, so that’s good?
@@kawaiijutsu Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I really appreciate it. From my trips to both Japan and China, I definitely get what you mean about things in the US feeling rushed and the differences in paying attention to the feelings of others. Also the awful insurance... 🥲 I'll definitely keep in mind what you've shared, as my partner makes his transition back. Thanks again, and take care!
@@from_xiaokui thank you!! Take care too, and congrats on your partner moving onto new things after the JET program! I really liked my time on it, but I also like my life now too :)
This trip is from the summer, yeah - I only brought the one cardigan for going on boats, the plane, etc. I don’t travel around as much in the winter, and keep it to more work-focused trips, since I can’t do the backpack method with winter clothes - it’s just too bulky. I just use a carry on suitcase in that case
I got it off Amazon a long time ago, but any search for airplane footrest should bring it up - it’s basically a strap that goes around the tray table arms, and it’s a little hammock for your feet. You can’t use it till you hit cruising altitude though.
@@kawaiijutsu Thank you for your quick response. I think I saw it on Amazon and will now consider getting it. I am only 5' 1" and am wondering if this is going to work for me. Assuming the strap can be adjusted to the shortest length. I'm going to Malaysia this summer and it's a long haul flight from SFO so I think this is really going to help me out.
I cut off a lump I thought would be about the right size, then heated it in the microwave about 10 seconds till it was malleable, then just sorta jammed it into the container and molded it till it was the right shape

THAT IS AMAZING...........I'm an overpacker and I can't believe you managed to pack that light for a 2 weeks overseas trip........

@@kawaiijutsu now that you say abt buying something, how about souvenirs? how do you bring them back home?

For anyone with ADHD, most traditional ADHD medications are straight up not allowed in Japan, even with a prescription.
