Great idea :) Love the tracks! -HEY! One thing that may help as far as being able to control speed and consistency : There are some really light tension springs you can get at your local hdwr store.. I have had some really great luck connecting one (or up to 4 or more of these things for longer slides) to the base plate and a fixed spot. The tension created from the extended spring can offer more controlled, smooth slow slides.. :) Pretty cheap way to get some consistent results :) Cheers!;)
cheers Marcus, it seems to work, which is great, but you do get track noise. but it'll be good for shot where the audio is dubbed after. I tested it on some uneven ground before, it was okay but I figure I need a plank of wood to lay the tracks on.
@evzeeland hello there, yeah this is the one they sent me from ebay, even though the listing was for a EL 717. if you look at the pics you can see there's a few brands available that are in fact the same tripods. I've been using it with a sigma 500mm and its been really good as the footprint (lens mount to tripod head) is much bigger than my old velbon sherpa 250. I really like this tripod, and for £125 ish you can't complain.
@shrimpinpat I tried with my old train, but it was soooo bumpy it was terrible. It is a really old train. I'm tempted to buy a new one, and do some tests.
@mikecazzx cheers. I reckon skate wheels on scaffold bar works really good, I just thought I'd try something a little different. the stuff I shot with this looked good. I'll try and post some so you can see.
@TheLimbReaper thanks, yeah I saw them in the shop, the stuff Im using is about 25 years old so I thought I'd look at some new stuff. my boogies are the plastic type I was also wondering about upgrading to the metal wheel type. Im gonna try and pop some actual footage up.
@rivertracksstudioThanks, Yeah I'm going to, I've just been lazy. What I've shot so far (tests) looks good, I also linked it to a cordless drill to wind it in with string....noisy but good constant speed, I'll try and post them soon.
Neat idea for filming model rail sets. That HO guage track comes in flexible/bendable sections about 48 inches long too.

Wow, add an egg timer (anchored down say with a sand bag), attached to the length of string - and now you have a time lapse dolly!

@marcusduprat cheers man, just pulled it along using an elastic band, it worked great.

just found some track which is about 50/60cm long, could be really good as less joins means less chance of blips
