- This video shows you how to do hand over hand steering. This is a basic driving lesson and should be watched by all beginner drivers before they start to drive, as it will help them to understand how to properly turn a car before they are actually in a situation that will require them to do so. The hand-over-hand steering method has been around for a long time, and this tutorial is geared towards explaining it thoroughly!

Thanks, this really helped. My instructor taught me this at my last lesson, but my nerves were already in overdrive from driving and I kept screwing it up. But now I feel like I got it, thanks again.

omg just happened to me a few days ago 😩😩
Thanks
instructors are brutal
Same
Very helpful. I tend to overthink it when trying to actively do this, so a visual aid is super helpful, especially if someone is rusty or not as experienced.
Thank . I would never passed my test without your tips. The first time ,I failed because I could not control the wheels. Got it today . So happy
Same I just failed because my turns were to wide..
i failed twice 😭
I love his accent. The way he says "hey everybody" is so cute and funny
Thank you for sharing! It's quite easy now that I see this... I just need the practice. I just had my first driving lesson and was shown this technique... I kept on screwing it up and pissed off my instructor lmao
I feel so uncomfortable when looking at the video and then trying it in person 😭
It is very uncomfortable@ first. You'll get comfortable with it.
Same bro I was doing it I person
Facts 😭😭
Probably your doing it without the wheel
@@nicholausbell2749 I passed my Test on the first try
11 lessons & no one taught me this......I understand now but my last instructor pretty much SCREAMED I doing wasn't hand over hand.....when I never learned, after noticing he didn't even show me!?
Just in case anyone still cares... I live in Ontario and this is exactly how instructors teach you to turn. It 's different in other countries, states, continents, etc.; I'm sure people are aware of that. Just do what you were taught to do, whether that be hand over hand or hand to hand, if you want to pass.
9 to 3 for parallel parking u turns
more helpful than my two hour lesson LOL this lady just kept grabbing the wheel💀
Hey man I know your videos are old and everything but they really helped me out during my drive test today. I really appreciate you man!! Anyone who reads this good luck on your test!!
on a driving test, are you supposed to used hand over hand to turn the wheel back to being straight ? Or can you just let the wheel glide through your hands back into place ?
You have to hand over hadn
You gently let it glide through your hands
Angryperson not in my drivers training in Michigan .
It really depends, some instructors will tell you to hand over hand to bring it back straight, whereas other instructors will tell you to slightly release the grip and let it slide back to it's original position. That being said, I think both are acceptable.
some will say use push pull
literally helped me so much finally started my driving portion of drivers Ed and I’m absolutely atrocious at hand over hand steering 💀
Why the fuck can’t we use hand to hand it’s so much easier and safer I can drive perfectly fine except this
I was taught hand over hand steering and this is the proper way to do it so that we can stay in our own lane and not turn wide and cause an accident.
confused my instructor said you can't cross over hands what am I seeing now😩😩😩
Yep..u must learn her trick bcs he teach you
That's actually the FASTEST WAY to turn the wheel.
How could you dislike a instructional video? LOL
Likely because this video has different instructions than the dislikers specific handbook. I know mine wants us to do hand over hand for the entire turn, not just the start.
If the info is wrong, which it is
@@kevperm6131 I mean, it depends where you're at. It may be wrong for you, but not for others. Perhaps search some driving videos from a person that is within your region?
Because a lot of places will fail you for doing hand over hand bc it's seen as less safe than hand to hand
we want a VIDEO on how to return the driving wheel quickly to its normal position after doing a u-turn.
Mine does it on its own
Thank you so much for your help! My instructor at the driving school lesson I took last summer I didn’t do this correctly and he called me doing the hamster wheel because I was so nervous I didn’t know what I was doing at the same time I was trying to keep calm.
I did hand over hand and literally failed my driving test in Nevada. I was told by the dmv instructor that hand over hand is not correct and that it’s dangerous due to the “airbag” even though my driving instructor literally taught me this.
I think they were talking about 10 and 2 hand positions
thank you! I'm from n.j and this helped tremendously.
If you live in California, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT listen to this. Your hands are not "supposed" to be at the 2 and 10 o'clock position but anywhere between 2-10 and 3-9 o'clock. If you were crossing your arms over the steering wheel and got hit by a car the air bag could possibly break your arm and send it back into your face. I don't see this being helpful while taking the driving test
Dgit Agile so 3-9 is bad to do hand over hand steer
My instructor demands I do this but whenever I try she complains I’m not close enough and THEN after nagging complains that it wasn’t smooth enough and THEN complains that it wasn’t fast enough
thanks alot this was extremely helpful, before I used to turn the wheel with 1 hand
I mean I think that's basically what your doing
You turn the wheel back to center using just your palm, despite a specific warning on the associated driver’s lesson to not turn the wheel with just your palm.

Dgit Agile fuck thanks for letting me know ! California is already so strict with every step
Dgit Agile Michigan as well!
The hand over hand technique is absolutely retarded asf. Why can't i drive the way i want to as long as its safe. I feel the majority of people fail because theyre simply telling you how to drive. Instead of how youre comfortable too.
Does anyone know if they are strict with this method in Washington state?
It is very much advised to use this method when you are taking the behind the wheel driving test, but once you pass you can use any means of method you want. The test is just to make sure one knows how to drive safely. So long story short, you do not need to drive this way unless you are taking the driving test.
I was working with a new driver today who wanted to know "Do I do hand over hand after the turn??" although it is not called out here, it is demonstrated.
Surely not a good one for fast driving around corners while maintaining the most control of the car.
Depending on car's lock-to-lock and steering sensivity and track's/road's layout prefered position is 3-9 with thumbs firmly grabing the wheel or 3-9 with thumbs up on the wheel on 2-10 for cars that need more lock during countersteering as thumbs can block if not being placed on the wheel during fast transitions right-left or during countersteering and fast direction changes that need more lock.
Thanks So Much :)
Can you do this if you use 3 and 9, by alternating between 3 and 12 instead of 2 and 12?
Sonal Aggarwal wat
The fuck
YES!!!!!
You just have to remember this $ecret:
Move your hands AS LESS AS POSSIBLE, AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE, IN AS LITTLE TIME AS POSSIBLE & AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.
excuse me who what when
i know how to drive but in order to take my road test i have to drive w both hands, n i only drive w one lolol
Man these confused me🤦🏾♀️so bad
And my teacher told me not to cross my hands 😠
you cross them temporarily. you don’t KEEP them crossed because then you can’t turn
If I do this on my road test, I will fail.. not to cross arms.. check this out.. this is way much better ruclips.net/video/Lxa6lF-l13c/видео.html
Hand to hand is used to keep a consistent position to know where the wheel is pointing, if you want to sport drive, it is more convenient to do hand to hand, but for safety, you go for shuffle steering for sure, used to drive on the streets
Mine too
Well surely cross hand is a better steering method, the claim cross hand method is dangerous because the airbag will hit your arm in a collision, however if you think about it you wont be able to do sharp turn if you are driving fast
I love how in some places this is illegal but where I live they basically DEMAND this of you
Man I’ve always drove with one hand lol
This is so much easier than push pull I'm incapable of learning that technique but this one is doable
Why do we have to turn the wheel in an awkward way? Wish they had kept it simple lol 😅
Turn that shit how you want bro you just needa do hand over hand for the rest
But he keeps using his palm to bring the wheel back to the middle. Aren't you also supposed to hand over hand back to center?
Thanks for the visuals! I couldn't understand just from reading about it.
I messed up while doing driversed and my teacher scolded me :(
If you live in New Jersey the hand position is 3 and 9 O'Clock
sesha sai srivatsav thank you
Driving with two hands is for bitches but I need this license💀
bro thought he was cool after saying that
Very helpful!
So I live in the state of Pennsylvania and we’re not aloud to cross our hands but this is the only way I see it. What I’m confused
Tanpri universe Tanpri la nature tanpri bondye ki gen tout pouvous amen
I cringe every time I see someone using the push pull technique of turning the wheel. In my mind, it is a sign of a beginner driver. I know many people use it who are good drivers, but I can't help it. It just looks so awkward, slow and most importantly not smooth at all. It boggles my mind there are countries that actually require you to use it in driving school.
Hand over hand steering is what a proper steering technique looks like. Fast and smooth.
Exactly!
Push Pull is taught because you MUST use that technique to drive a truck or bus. A car licence allows you to drive certain vehicles with a large wheel, so you need to know how to drive push pull.
Well, the title does say for beginner drivers lmao
Im doing my drivers license right now and I suck so much with the push and pull thing I could honestly go and cry. My hands do the hand over hand thing out of total instinct and I cant seem to turn it off and my drivering teacher is so mad at me. Jesus how tf ahould I manage this?
@Black Rod actually in uk after the students pass his license they dropped the pull push method they mostly say it's not natural and slow
In my opinion it's a waste of time and energy to do the same task and good luck to retake control of the car in emergency situation
Thanks this was very helpful! I just started my drivers lessons and my teacher taught me this method (the Netherlands)
This is totally wrong method . This method can put you in accident.
very helpful instructions, very easy to follow. Thank you so very much
This is not good. If someone hits you while crossing the arms and the air bag activates, yours are fucked up
American way of driving but in the UK it is hand to hand technique whichi think is better
What are you suppose to do after the hand over hand motion? Let it slide or hand over hand back?
Bape112 you have to let it slide back into place
Depends on where you live. In NYS they changed it, you have to do it hand over hand back
Very informational.
No you need to get back not slide
You don't really have time to hand over hand back unless you're u turns or reversing. Just slide it through your fingers or sorta slide and guide with with fingers and hands lol. It's just instinct honestly. As long as you have control do what's best for you.
Watching this the night before my test 💀
How do you time ur turn correctly like how do u kno when to start the hand over hand method
Facts I want to know, did you find out?
Who else was scared before their test?
This was terrible technique. Don't do it like this fool.
8year old video still helpful to this day. Thx❤
wait, my car has a really sharp steering, so when I turn left or right, I can't even complete a one full hand over hand because if I do my car will oversteer, what can I do to prevent getting deduction points during my road test?
Bryan Timbal did you try the push pull method?
My instructor never taught me how to steer, then got mad when I didn't know how to steer properly ?????
Yea u cannot cross hands 🙌 they will fail u for it in Minnesota
I received a lot of conflicting information on how to steer. This video clear this up.
This is completely wrong! Your first move is a crossover, which is ineffective and unsafe if needed to quickly recover the wheel. Hope your not a driving instructor. Crossing arms is also an automatic fail on a road test in the state of NJ
okay i kinda understand now.. i am reading the drivers manual and they explained the method but i didnt understand bc i am more of a visual learner
10& 2 are out dated it’s 3&9 now
Actually its 11/2 lol
Love this Video man! Helped me so much THANK YOU
Amazing instructions! Very clear
In WA and the tests all want your hands at 8 and 4. Also they don't want you to cross hands.
WA drivers guide wants hand over hand for sharp corners.
If you drive a full sized vehicle, like me '69 pickup, not equipped with power steering hand over hand is the only way to go.
You do the hand over hand then use the palm-only method which entails no true control of the wheel. You got a NO-GO at this station, go back to retraining.
Can't believe nobody gave this video a like, unless is just my phone, 👍❤️. Pura Vida
This video is really helpful, Thank you so much
As someone that drives with one hand I’m not excited about taking my road test just because of the 2 hands on the wheel rule
This helped alot, thank you
I’m 17 got my g1 back in February going for my g2 in February so I’m looking up driving tips so I don’t fail might take a driving course to learn the skills too
is this the way to do it in Ontario? I'm a beginner and my girlfriend said that hand over hand is not the proper way to turn.....
I'm in Ontario and my instructor has told me that hand over hand is the way to pass the test.
My instructor says this is incorrect, your hands need to have a equal space between for example, your right hands ends in the 10 clock position well your left hand should be around 2 or 3 clock to equal the distance and always keep the hands on the wheel and make a full revolution turn for non-sharp turns
That’s only have of the Hand over have method.
You forgot to return the steering wheel to the 12 o’clock using the same method in reverse
The DMV handbook says 8 & 4 o’clock, info needs to be correct as it may be on the test
this was very helpful! he also has pretty hands lol
This is why you get a steering wheel, you know all this crap before drivers Ed lol
I'm in Malaysia now, I have hummer h2 is it hard to drive with left hand steering in Malaysia road?
This is not safe at all when his arms cross if the airbag deploys your arms hit ur forehead depending on the rate of speed
Thank you your explanation is really good and helpful
You returned the steering to straight by one hand...is using one hand to recover steering correct and easier or we should use both the hands as while turning steering wheel...
What is the advantage of this ? I turned with both my hands in road test and got a negative comment.
Painful to sit through.
Then stand
@@kathy1770 I started standing. Had to sit down eventually.
You didn’t show how to put your hands for after the turn. You can’t spin with one hand
I love how you center it, using the fastest method. 😁
My brother says dont cross your arm or you'll die instantly if you crash.
Are you Canadian? I ask because i'm tryna differentiate the accents between Americans and Canadians
This video is excellent!! Thank you #2024
we are all sinners destined for hell. Jesus died on the cross for our sins so that we may have eternal life with him. Accept him as your Lord&savior. and repent (a change of mind about your sin and about who Jesus is, that results in a change of action) For by grace you are saved and NOT of YOUR works. start a relationship with Him! seek Him!
???? this is an instructional video abt driving ?
Nicely explained!
My driving instruction from the DMV states that my hands should be in the 8 and 4 o'clock position. This may be important on the written test.
Mine too 🫠
Tysm helping me with my driving instructor
Thank you for the helpful tips such a great video
Then how do you do "Hand to Hand" steering the practice test said in between 7 and 8 O clock and in between 4 and 5 o clock
This is so helpful thank you for sharing!
actually comes naturally if you have been driving for at least for a while
In Germany my driving instructor would have tortured me for doing this. Interesting how differently countries handle these things.
I need so much help with hand over hand for the turns
