The most shocking thing about Pegasus is that... he is the character that set up the standards for yugioh villains. The backstory, the theme with his deck, and his charisma... Without him? I would have doubt we would even get other cool villains like Marik or ZONE. Heck, I knew and loved Yugioh thanks to Yugi facing of Pegasus.
You ask if I've heard of Orpheus and Euridice. My answer is yes, and I've seen Hadestown too. "I also play the lyre" "Ah, a player and a liar. I've met guys like you."
Mine too 😭😭😭 my mom didn’t like a lot of the shit I used to watch but she really gravitated towards yugioh and avatar, she’s always loved Yami-Yugi’s voice in particular
1. I love how his actual deck *perfectly* encapsulates his character. *The Toons* are his ,almost childish, fun side. They're silly and over the top, but clearly have a sinister edge to them that's hiding just beneath the surface. And then then we have *Relinquished & Thousand-Eyes Restrict* which are infinately more *eldritch* by comparison. Representing Pegasus's darkness and his desire to achieve his goal by ANY means necessary even if it means taking everything from others; even their souls. 2. I'll be honest, retconning him to still be alive after his showdown with Bakura was EASILY the best change the anime made. Him popping back up in GX just to be a troll was *great* lol
The whole Yugioh movie wouldn't have been as likely to happen without him. I mean, they could've played it off as Kaiba raiding his manor to pinch the cards but they gave us a bonus duel instead and the semi-ominous mention of 'I only had the one card, Kaiba' line that wouldn't have been there otherwise.
I always think of it representing his light side from the childlike innocence and happiness of finding true love with Cecilia that he adored, then the darkness and macabre nature of Relinquished being ironically more likely to take and force to be with them as an extension of his drive to bring her back to be with him regardless of her own wishes in how she'd want such a thing to be done by taking others' lives to get hers back in the first place.
Actually Pegasus' legacy is shown in 5D's too: it can be understood only by japanese watchers, but, in the advertising of the stadium in which the big match between Yusei and Jack takes place, is said that the main sponsor of for the tournaments is the "Pegasus J. Crawford Memorial Foundation". Basically showing that Pegasus is still remembered in that timeline.
He said _after_ 5D's. Maybe you've forgotten but the 100% canon movie, Bonds Beyond Time had Paradox, a member of the main villain group for the final arc of 5D's trying to kill him because he made the card game.
You know you've made a goated antagonist when, given the choice between the manga version where Pegasus dies and the anime version where he lives, most people would prefer he lived.
I feel like those who prefer the anime version like it better cuz it shows how much Pegasus changed post DK. It gives a chance to show improvement post villainry
@@einstwareinlichtI mean the dude even looked like he should at least be if nothing else older then kaiba not like the same age makes the whole dynamic between the 2 and other characters very different then if he had a seniority advantage like we thought or still think he does
I appreciate that the anime kept Pegasus alive and I admit I also grinned like a giddy schoolgirl when he appeared in GX afterwards. I also like how despite his childish demeanor, and going from king of the hill to king of the ash pile, Pegasus still goes out with dignity and is ultimately content with the fact he lost after the events of Duelist Kingdom and was able to move on with his life. In a way, Pegasus had a “coming of age” arc of sorts.
Two headcanons I have about Pegasus: 1) His full name is Maximillian "Pegasus" J. Crawford (Pegasus is a nickname he got somewhere) 2) Not so much about Pegasus, but I like to think the Toon World version we got irl is a mass-produced errata Kaiba distributed just to spite Pegasus after he acquired Duel Monsters
after who acquired Duel Monsters? Wasn't it Industrial Illusions all the way, but anyone was able to develop their own cards? Like how Declan developed Pendulum cards and but they malfunctioned & busted their scales against Yuya?
@@andrewrenshaw2741 possibly, but I also remember Pegasus not owning the game then. Plus, Kaiba could have gone because he figured the only one who knew how to put down the God Cards was the one who brought them in in the first place
Always loved the sort of dynamic contrast of Pegasus's personality, how on the one hand he's a showman with the heart of a young child which is evident in his love for Cartoons and the fact he created a card game for kids, yet his more sinister side also comes out do to desperation and a desire to get his love back. Really like that the anime didn't kill him off like in the manga as he isn't truly an evil person, misguided sure, but not evil. Also love his more showy and flamboyant dub voice.
One thing I really appreciate when it comes to Pegasus is that for the toon monsters they actually too the time to animate them like classic looney tunes. They had a lot more frames, smears and squash/stretch to their animations which isn’t really utilized in Japanese animation all that often
I grew up on the 4kids anime and a friend of mine is a manga purist. We clash so hard with one another over who we think the best villains are because she has an eternal love for Marik while I've had "Yugi boyyyy" echoing in my head for almost 30 years
Pegasus is just as good in the JP dub, my favorite Pegasus moment is him trolling Kaiba during their duel in the castle in the JP dub He isn't quite as entertaining in the manga. I'd say the anime (JP & EN dub both) upgraded Pegasus and downgraded Marik, so your manga purist friend liking Marik better makes sense
You brought it up but it’s worth adding that Japanese Pegasus didn’t just say some random words in English, he did the same with honorifics, using English for them. Which is why English Pegasus does the whole “Yugi-boy” thing. Probably should have said random words in Japanese and said “Yugi-kun” in English.
Isn't Pegasus supposed to be American though? It'd be kinda weird to have one of the characters that's an American in season 1 of the anime just blurt out some Japanese honorifics in the dub
They couldn't, 4kids was of the mentality that audiences needed to be tricked into thinking the anime they are watching originates from America The reason was because that's what they did with pokemon originaly and found greater success then other anime, and they specifically did that with pokemon cause they saw sailor moon flop with audiences main complaint about sailor moon being that it was too clearly Japanese and thus weird and unrelatable to them (Note if you look futhur the more likely reason sailor floped at first was because America didn't really have magical girl shows at the time and sailor moon was kind of written in a way where you expected to already know about the genra, of course pokemon was in danger of falling into the same boat since America also didn't really have monster tamer franchises)
The bit with the duel between Joey/Jounichi and Keith was in retrospect, an interesting moment of humanity for Pegasus: besides being somewhat hypocritical to call out Keith’s cheating, as he does the same, he’s really more in Joey’s corner out of a kind of sympathy. After all, helping the kid’s sister wouldn’t clash with his own goals and desires so he’s covertly in his corner even if he’s acting aloof about it…
Technically he only called out Keith AFTER Joey won. If Keith had won, Pegasus would have held onto that information. Remember that at this point he needs Yugi to win out. A contestant he could disqualify at any time would be very useful to rigging the outcome.
@@cybertrace9698 We're never given a valid reason for Pegasus to hate Keith though. It can't be because Keith cheats, Pegasus literally cheated the moment we met the guy. Hell Pegasus used cheating to not only beat Keith when they dueled but humiliate the guy on top of it for no reason. Hell you could even make the argument Keith cheated because he realized Pegasus was cheating as well, thus he had to cheat if he wanted a chance of beating him.
@@thefanwithoutaface8105I doubt Pegasus would see it that way. I think he is conscient that the way he plays and the way he generally goes about his goal are nefarious and unfair. However, according to him, the end justifies the means. Reviving his wife is much more important to him that sportsmanship. You could say the same for Yugi. He's technically cheating each time he transforms into Atem. But the end justifies the means. He cannot save his grandpa otherwise. But does Kieth's end justify the means? Dude wanted money and revenge. Pegasus would surely have no respect for him
i like that dub slightly altered Pegasus' motivation through his diary. Basically in the sub, he just wanted to see Cecilia again, but in the dub he wanted to revive her.
Duelist Kingdom isn't my favorite arc of the Yu-Gi-Oh anime. But Pegasus was hands down the best villian of the entire show. Unlike other villians, Pegasus had such much charisma & charmed into his personality that makes me giggle, while also being an terrifying villian that does things better than what other villians does that felt underwhelming and his backstory was more sadder than the others. Even though he died in the manga version, I'm actually glad they kept him alive in the anime version cause he was such an fun man.
I remember somebody online saying that Pegasus was partly a self-insert of Takahashi himself (mainly his love of games and Western cartoons and being the creator of the card game) "Okay, I was kind of with you until that last bit" Omigosh that was so perfect out of context! This is going into my headcanons, but whenever Pegasus allies himself with the main character a part of him is aware that he is the only adult in the cast and he kind of looks out for them. There's a scene in an old fic of mine where somebody hacks his castle's defense system - he's genre savvy enough to conduct a head count when the lights go out and tell people to stay in groups so they can't get picked off. And in another fic where the bad guy ships Kaiba a living doll designed to resemble Mokuba (who died from an untreated seizure beforehand), as a mean-spirited prank, asking Pegasus to be the middleman to deliver it, Pegasus tells the bad guy he could never do that to someone grieving and tells him to get the hell out of his house. Then, when the doll returns to Pegasus's island, Pegasus discovers the kid has a talent for art and gives him supplies to entertain himself while he and Kaiba talk business. (I have a headcanon about him being good with kids in general following his switching sides. As I said in a previous comment, in one of my fanfic universes he even has an adopted daughter).
@@kylajensen1957 Indeed, it is very heartwarming to know. My headcanon is that he always wanted to have a big happy family with Cecillia, so after her death he shifted his focus to his work to channel the happiness he wanted to give to his family. In that way, every child who plays the card game is part of his big family. Wonder if there is a fanfic with that headcanon somewhere.
One of the players in my D&D game summoned a Pegasus as their mount with the Find Greater Steed spell, and I elected to make the steed's icon Maximillion. He's so iconic that no one minded that I'd represented a magic horse with a 24 year old human man.
One of my favorite parts of pegasus is that in the Japanese dub he speaks broken japanese to emphasize the fact that he's american. A lot of character in dubs speak broken english but i feel like you rarely see broken japanese
My favorite part about Pegasus for me back when I was a kid was just how intimidating he felt. The man created duel monsters he knows more about this game than even, Kaiba who we were shown to be only second to Yugi and, Pegasus completely trounced the man all while mocking him in every way imaginable including deforming his precious, Blue-eyes by making it another one of his toons. He felt practically invincible and I wasn't sure if, Yugi actually could beat him or not.
Pegasus and Dartz were made very well in this regard. Even if Dartz had a lame backstory in comparison to Pegasus, he gave off an aura that he had multiple health bars. Truly definition of bosses.
Pegasus was the perfect villain. He was everything every other villain wasn’t and it worked so well. I love Battle City, but Duelist Kingdom will never be beaten. I know everyone makes fun of YGO because of the lack of rules and shenanigans. But this was the only thing making it stand out. This was the appeal as a child. This is what made it so entertaining and it would have been so dry without every bit of absurdity.
Our kid selves loved that Graveyard Mammoth(I think that what it wasa called?) going inside Kaiba's Ultimate Blue eyes to weaken it. Made perfect sense! :P
Such a shame that this fantastic one of a kind villain is associated with the weirdest and messiest season of the anime. That made him look like a lesser threat than Marik and Dartz while actually having much more going for him than they had
I remember buying the Music To Duel By cd way back in the day, and sometimes my mom would hear songs when we'd ride in the car. She didn't know that much about YGO, but she loved some of the music. Her absolute favorite was Pegasus's song, Face Up Face Down. She still listens to half the album to this day. Those composers were on some special shit, man.
Turns out that's not the only villain song Darren Dunstan has sung. If you haven't already, I'd recommend you look up "It Will All Be Mine" from Pokemon Live, because Dunstan played Giovanni in that.
I always liked Pegasus. He was one of my favorite characters in Yu-Gi-Oh. I also really like his toon monsters and Relinquished/Thousand Eyes Restrict.
1. How come she was never mentioned or seen prior in the series (or was she always there in your version)? 2. Does she also use Toons like her father or does she actively not use them due to some resentment of her father?
@@ogopogoagogo it's pretty complicated.... Okay, her basic backstory is that she was "born" by a mad doctor who used DNA from his patients to perfect his cloning projects. Cecelia happened to be one of the patients he was treating while collecting "samples" (and he also collected some DNA from Pegasus after Cecelia's death to "fill in the gaps" - THIS IS IMPORTANT LATER). A while after Duelist Kingdom, Yugi and Co kick in the door of this mad doctor's operation and have him arrested. All of his clone projects died while "in utero", except for one, this character, who had grown up to about nine in a test tube, and of course Yugi and Co can't decide what to do with her. They call Pegasus in because they feel like he deserves to know what was going on. Pegasus is quick to surmise that this clone, being the combined DNA of him AND Cecelia, basically is their biological kid, decides to look after her, and by all accounts is a pretty good dad (I hc that Pegasus was pretty good with kids after Duelist Kingdom, and GX backs that up, so that helps). He names her Madeline, after the children's book character (Cecelia always liked the name), but she often goes by Maddie. She does use Toon monsters but she doesn't have a deck built around them like Pegasus. Instead, her deck is mostly based around cards inspired by childhood toys like dolls. Oh, also (this is the VERY IMPORTANT thing I was going to say) the fact Pegasus had the Millennium Eye at the time the doctor was secretly harvesting from him fricked with her DNA, and she inherited the Mind Scan power and the ability to see monster spirits (more ridiculous things have happened in this show) although with her she can't turn it off unless her eye is covered, so she usually wears a medical patch over it. In my headcanon Pegasus nurtures regret over Duelist Kingdom and is afraid that Maddie will hate him if she finds out what he was like back then, so of course this fic is a story where she's sent back in time to meet the Duelist Kingdom era version of her dad. (This was way too long).
BRO! STALP!!!! IM ALSO DOING THE SAME THING! Even going as far as to draw comics!! 👏👏👏 I'm so happy to see other writers and artists working on this character!
@@kylajensen1957 are you asking in terms of Pegasus? Or in terms of my OC? I can answer both... Ooh! I should also have you clarify are you talking in terms of looks? Or personality?
Yugi Boy~ But this is part of why i love the Yugioh anime and manga so much, and it's mainly because a wide plethora of characters and villains to shine- you don't need to power to be a standout villain, and it allows for more unique personalities to be shown thru things like design, dialogue and play styles
I wished there was more Pegasus. He was an amazing villain for a "card game" show! He "invented" the game. He is rich, so he can buy any card. Plus the fact he is the inventor/game desiner, he could potentially invent "tournament legal cards" to troll his enemies
Only one thing to say. Listen to Pegasus in French, if you like the English work you'll probably find the French voice absolutely insane because he manages to be both bery serious and a complete goof all the while actively maintaining an air of menace to his voice. One of my favorite thing is these all "songs" tied to the anime that were done, And Peagsus one, at least in French, is actually done and sung BY THE VOICE ACTOR !
Toon was probably the first archetype introduced in the tcg . XD back in the day all the kids in my playground wanted a full toon deck. Good old memories Excelent video bro. Hope u Have a Nice weekend.
I love that Toons got support beyond it's era of the anime. We have Toon Kingdom to replace Toon World and it giving Toons protection from destruction. Banishing a card at the top of your deck per negated destruction. That gave me allot of trouble in Duel Links as a result when facing them.
@JaxonHex That could very well have been, considering that, to my understanding, in order for a series of cards to be officially labeled as an archetype in Yugioh, there has to be at least one card that specifically supports the other cards with that particular naming scheme -- Elegant Egotist in the case of Harpies, and later on, Harpie's Pet Dragon. But with Toons, they were a bit more fleshed out as far as the number of cards they had and the more uniform playstyle they shared (all 4 original Toon monsters had the same effect, but had different statlines), which made them feel more cohesive as a whole. It's also worth noting that Toons reflect Pegasus's personality not just by being a mirror of his more playful side, but they also were all cartoon versions of existing monsters, and 2 of the 4 he played (Toon Summoned Skull and Blue Eyes Toon Dragon, respectively) were both cards that he stole from Yugi and Seto Kaiba to use against them, not unlike how Relinquished (and Thousand Eyes Restrict, by extension) absorb his opponent's monsters to use their powers against his opponent. It goes to show how manipulative Pegasus was, and how far he was willing to go to achieve his goals. Tangent aside, I think it's accurate to say that Harpies and Toons were the first true archetypes Yugioh had; it's funny to think how much better Harpies eventually became, despite the duelist the deck was originally played by
I love Relinquished. It's the perfect final phase for Pegasus - for both a man like him, and for his personal journey. It's so sinister with a vulnerable facade, but capable of terrifying potential. And what's more, its corrupting eye is just like how the Millenium Eye corrupted Pegasus. What an insidious force.
SO happy to see a video on my favorite Yugioh character, and glad yugioh R got a mention! The way it implies this whole other side to Pegasus, and develops that time in his life between getting the eye & Duelist Kingdom. Loved Yugioh R a ton, just wish we could have seen that side of him more.
I have to admit, it was great to see Pegasus talked about because to me he truly is an iconic villain that is arguably the most dangerous of them all and yet is a master of hiding how devious and ruthless he can be, by his own genuine charismatic and eccentric personality. His toons and Relinquished both represent him, or rather his two sides to his heart, perfectly. Yugi-boy!
Maximillion Pegasus truly is a fantastic character and I loved him so much when I was younger being a man who loved using toon cards for his deck was truly amazingly fun and his personality was so elegant, charismatic, and also very push your buttons type of character very intriguing for me and for years I had developed my own deck dedicated for the toons being really happy to have created it for so long as one of my greatest childhood wishes completed 😁
I would love to see more videos like this one from you about Marik, Bakura, maybe even Darts if you would want too. This was a super informative and entertaining watch thank you.
20:13 Ah yes, Yu-Gi-Oh! R, aka Rush Duels before Rush Duels were even a thing... also created by Takahashi's assistant... still enjoy it, though I wish Bakura actually had a role in that story.
I have a physical copy of Yugioh R somewhere in fact. Somewhere at home I also have the three "Jashin" God cards that only appeared in that manga, due to me having had access to the volumes of Shonen Jump that came with the cards as a bonus, as Shonen Jump used to sometimes give you Yugioh cards with them. It's also how I have a physical copy of the Elemental Hero Stratos somewhere
@@zigazav1 Aw, I miss when they'd put cards in the manga releases... I I only have volumes 3, 4, and 6 of Millennium World (though I can't remember which one had the card with it), and that was honestly pretty cool.
I watched the show first in Brazilian Portuguese, Pegasus wasn't as flamboyant as the English voice, but as an exchange we had a much more snarky man belittling everyone he met during the Duelist Kingdom, we lost Yugi-boy but we got "Little Yugi" and "Little Kaiba" instead, and it worked wonders
looking at the title I'm only realizing now in the English localization his basically "I'm rich Pegasus" lmao espescially since it's so close to Maximillien which is used in the dub I grew up with
Wanna hear something interesting, Abridged Pegasus has Gay mannerism while Darren Dunstan the voice of Pegasus is also gay! Not judging, just telling the truth!
A neat detail with Toon monsters; they were debuted as a new sub type like flip and tuner cards. One thing I was under the impression on why Yugi didn't hit Pegasus with the penalty game was because Pegasus playing honorably. Sure he had mind reading with his Eye, but all Millennium items have some special ability to use in battles so Yugi could employ his own power.
In the manga when pegasus told yugi he wanted the puzzle, pharoh asks him about his knowledge about the items And pegasus told him they were created by an unknown means but were designed for manipulating and corrupting souls and thus the millennium items contain a powerful evil. Pharoh then desides not to use the puzzle's magic unless absolutely necessary partly because of his holyer then thou mindset and partly to not let himself get corrupted by the puzzle's evil magic.
As I recall, the duel between Yugi and Joey in the anime was a change the producers made from the manga as a good piece of fanservice, giving the fans the chance to see how these 2 friends duke out one another in the duel, as the manga both at that point and till its end didn't get these 2 friends to have a proper, no holds bar duel against one another
Pegasus was a very fun character. Especially when Toon World came out. The music was fun to hear. Kaiba: Your move's a cartoon? Pegasus:Not just a cartoon you fool! An entire magical cartoon world! Welcome Kaiba to... TOON WORLD!
Darren did such an AMAZING job with Pegasus, I HATE HIM WITH MY VERY CORE, and I still do. If you hate the character that much, that means the VA did amazing. And Darren didn't EVER disappoint as Pegasus.
Considering his bandana is changed to be a Union Jack in Duelist of the Roses and Falsebound Kingdom, I can see people legitimately getting confused by that
@@Mangakamen ...in my defense. I didn't get the chance to watch the rest of the video before making this comment. But there is something we both agree on. Pegasus does know where to find good suit.
Pegasus is the first one that his time as Villain isn't limited to one Volume of the Manga as Kaiba and Dark Bakura were (before becoming the Final Boss). More or less like in OG Dragon Ball, you have a Tournament after one arc and before the other. You have a couple of Villains of the Week between Kaiba's first defeat (Episodes 8-9 of the Manga) and Death-T (Episode 26-40),and Dark Bakura is an ocassional villain during the entire Manga until the end when he becomes the Final Boss. Pegasus's Arc starts in chapter 60 and ends in the 133. Marik takes almost the entire manga by having his arc started on chapter 146 and ended on the 278.
@@tmb11212 Might want to wait and watch the whole thing. Or at least state that you haven't watched it completly when posting a ''correction'' in the future! My 2 cents :D
The 4Kids dub of Pegasus really feels like the inspiration for Hawk Moth from "Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir", with a similarly tragic yet villainous motivation to steal the source of the protagonists' powers.
Oh Yugi boy this was amazing!!!!!! Awesome job with one of the best villains in all of Yugioh! :) I really love this video, honestly I feel like it may be your best yet! So fun, philosophical , and thought provoking. I love Pegasus so much and everything with him wa so awesome and memorable, and you've help me discover even more things to love. I really liked the Greek comparison you brought up, it was really fascinating. I really hope you do more Yugioh villains. Many of them all seem really awesome and great, so I'm wondering if any of the big ones would be considered bad/poorly done? Like I'm questioning if Marik was a great villain or not? He seems kind of wimpy compared to Pegasus and really gets overshadowed by his darker side. Also I'd love it if you made a video about the Yugioh R manga, I've heard it's pretty wild? Either, awesome video once again. Keep up the good work Manga boy. :)
@1:56 I half expected the narrator from the Dispatches from Elsewhere to be clipped over that he literally asks almost every episode if the person watching likes cartoon
Pegasus is a great villain since despite having a tragic backstory, he revels in being evil and toying with others, as if everything is simply like the game he created. But despite how childish and nonchalant he might seem on the surface, whne it comes to duels he’s a true force to be reckoned with, and his final duel with Yugi is one of the most nail-bitingly tense in the series. Plus, if you have your villain laughing while reading gag comics and drinking wine, that alone proves how amazing they are. I’m also glad that the anime changed it so that he doesn’t die after getting his Millennium Eye taken like in the manga, since despite having a far smaller role, I liked his reappearances in future Yugioh series as well.
I know in the past I've said harsh things to you but you have grown and I am so happy to have seen it all from MLP to now I have bin here I do miss the mystery ben look this new one is such an amazing fit good work and I hope you keep going
It’s been so long since I’ve read the Yugioh manga I forgot just how intense it was. And there’s so many layers to Pegasus that I never consider, but the Orpheus comparison is dead on. Fantastic video, makes me want to read the whole manga all over again XD.
Ren from Cardfight Vanguard takes a lot from Pegasus with his charismatic personality but also his menecing aura; He's a very iconic character and while some people disagree leaving him alive on the anime was a bad choice for me is a good one since it has a lot of uses in the world building to explore and is alawys a joy to use. Watching the man comeback in Gx was a delight surprise
Part of what made Pegasus feel like a great villain was to make an obvious pun, he literally held all the cards. He created the game itself meaning he knows every strategy and card in existence, he's insanely rich meaning he had every card and in the case of the Toons even those that weren't released, he's a master of the game itself shown by how he defeated guys like Kaiba and Bandit Keith with comical ease, and he has the ultimate ace in the hole with his Millenium Eye, allowing him to read his opponent's thoughts, making any kind of strategy doomed from the start. He was by all accounts a seemingly impossible to defeat opponent, one we genuinely believed Yugi couldn't beat even with every victory he accumulated over the course of the Arc.
Thank you for going into detail about the differences between the Anime & Manga versions of Pegasus. Too many Yu-Gi-Oh! fanatics keep trying to merge the Anime & Manga timelines together for some reason while deliberately ignoring any key differences between them.
Pegasus was the first REAL anime big baddie that i experienced when i was young that was bombastic, charismatic and had a major role in the story aside from being the standard big bad. From the crowning duel between Yugi and Pegasus that crowned Yugi as the King of Games to setting up the Millennium Items. When he appeared in the Yugioh movie (the one about the Pyramid of Light card), i was rather hyped whenever I get to see him in the main series~
Kewl video dude. I remember watching duelist kingdom when it dropped, back when you could only buy japanese cards. Maxamillion Pegasus was always my favorite character!
My first seeing Pegasus was when I was a small child. That soul stealing scene terrified me as a child. Truly a memorable introduction and memorable villain. Also "Yugiboy".
The changes the dub made can be controversial at times though i don't mind them. But i will die on the hill that Maximilian Pegasus is a way better name than Pegasus J. Crawford
Pegasus is honestly a strange opponent in anime history. It’s because he’s one of the few examples of a first boss who would have been just as potentially threatening at the end of the series as he was at the beginning. His millenium eye and inherent game knowledge would have made him just as much threat to Marik or Ishizu. (In all honesty I think with his eye he could probably beat the both of them don’t have to worry about the gods if Marik never gets to summon it) True if the series was written that way the toons would have to be stronger to match that point in the series but he was scary. Relinquished doesn’t need buffing as it was a great card for a very long time.

He said _after_ 5D's. Maybe you've forgotten but the 100% canon movie, Bonds Beyond Time had Paradox, a member of the main villain group for the final arc of 5D's trying to kill him because he made the card game.
His voice actor is also present
Thanks, interesting tidbit.

Pegasus being 24 is destroying my world right now. No way he's not at least 35. I refuse to believe it.
Same broooo, sameeee
There is no way he is 24, I can not accept that
The Japanese tend to do this, where they make the characters psychologically 10 years older than they should be.
@@einstwareinlichtI mean the dude even looked like he should at least be if nothing else older then kaiba not like the same age makes the whole dynamic between the 2 and other characters very different then if he had a seniority advantage like we thought or still think he does
@@NecfreonI think Kaiba is 17.
I swear his dub voice is one of the most iconic in a series loaded with amazing dub voices.
He goes on to voice 5ds characters
It's the one character the dub got mostly accurate to the source material, both personality and especially voice.
"Subtle" with his bright red suit, long silver hair, and golden false eye. Truly a man who embodies subtlety.
Kaiba: "Oh, he was a 'man's man' alright. He was THIS man's man, and THAT man's man..."
You know a character is good when they have 3 different interpretations and all of them are excellent.
Two headcanons I have about Pegasus:
1) His full name is Maximillian "Pegasus" J. Crawford (Pegasus is a nickname he got somewhere)
2) Not so much about Pegasus, but I like to think the Toon World version we got irl is a mass-produced errata Kaiba distributed just to spite Pegasus after he acquired Duel Monsters
after who acquired Duel Monsters? Wasn't it Industrial Illusions all the way, but anyone was able to develop their own cards?
Like how Declan developed Pendulum cards and but they malfunctioned & busted their scales against Yuya?
@@vanesslifeygo after Kaiba acquired DM. I'm pretty sure that's what happened. In any case, if he was just making cards, this is still a possibility
@@Utopia390rlI think only Pegasus could make cards, because Kaiba had to go to him for a solution to the Gods
@@andrewrenshaw2741 possibly, but I also remember Pegasus not owning the game then. Plus, Kaiba could have gone because he figured the only one who knew how to put down the God Cards was the one who brought them in in the first place

KAMEN-BOY YOU'VE DONE THIS WORLD RIGHT!
He's so camp!
It makes way more sense why Pegasus would make a trading card game given his dad was a casino owner.
And offer a lucrative cash prize. Though the Yugioh game to my knowledge has never done that irl @ competitions.

We clash so hard with one another over who we think the best villains are because she has an eternal love for Marik while I've had "Yugi boyyyy" echoing in my head for almost 30 years
Pegasus is just as good in the JP dub, my favorite Pegasus moment is him trolling Kaiba during their duel in the castle in the JP dub
He isn't quite as entertaining in the manga. I'd say the anime (JP & EN dub both) upgraded Pegasus and downgraded Marik, so your manga purist friend liking Marik better makes sense
Oh god, the Marik fangirls strike again
You brought it up but it’s worth adding that Japanese Pegasus didn’t just say some random words in English, he did the same with honorifics, using English for them. Which is why English Pegasus does the whole “Yugi-boy” thing. Probably should have said random words in Japanese and said “Yugi-kun” in English.
Yugi-chan lol
Isn't Pegasus supposed to be American though? It'd be kinda weird to have one of the characters that's an American in season 1 of the anime just blurt out some Japanese honorifics in the dub
@@owenstephens3389
He's probibly doing the double word thing where he says something in his 5st language and then translates.
English has honorifics
They couldn't, 4kids was of the mentality that audiences needed to be tricked into thinking the anime they are watching originates from America
The reason was because that's what they did with pokemon originaly and found greater success then other anime, and they specifically did that with pokemon cause they saw sailor moon flop with audiences main complaint about sailor moon being that it was too clearly Japanese and thus weird and unrelatable to them
(Note if you look futhur the more likely reason sailor floped at first was because America didn't really have magical girl shows at the time and sailor moon was kind of written in a way where you expected to already know about the genra, of course pokemon was in danger of falling into the same boat since America also didn't really have monster tamer franchises)

I always thought Pegasus' usage of "YUGI BOI" was meant to be more endearing than anything.
Sometimes it can be interpreted as condescending
The bit with the duel between Joey/Jounichi and Keith was in retrospect, an interesting moment of humanity for Pegasus: besides being somewhat hypocritical to call out Keith’s cheating, as he does the same, he’s really more in Joey’s corner out of a kind of sympathy. After all, helping the kid’s sister wouldn’t clash with his own goals and desires so he’s covertly in his corner even if he’s acting aloof about it…
I think he just hated Keith, and that's it, honestly
@@cybertrace9698 One can hate Keith and have respect for the guy who Keith was trying to hurt too. Not quite mutually exclusive
Both work, but somehow doing all of that just to see her again and not even revive her is an even more tragic story
@@jameshakai1662Nah, it works better in the dub. Sub makes him look like a simp who would burn the world for a glance of a woman.
Peagus 24… Can’t get over that, the sliver hair and reference to seeing Cartoons just make him old.
See that's why I thought declan from arc v was older
Also other characters having had cards from his game since they were kids not matching up with when he created it
Duelist Kingdom isn't my favorite arc of the Yu-Gi-Oh anime.
I remember somebody online saying that Pegasus was partly a self-insert of Takahashi himself (mainly his love of games and Western cartoons and being the creator of the card game)
"Okay, I was kind of with you until that last bit" Omigosh that was so perfect out of context!
Well, Kaiba is based on some asshole takahashi met while trying to learn a card game or something, so it makes sense.
Had a stroke reabing dat
iirc, Pegasus being good with kids is pretty much confirmed in the anime canon.
@@evanmak7837 i know GX supports it, and that honestly makes me happy
I always thought that Pegasus was what Joey would become if Yugi failed to defeat Marik and save Mai. Mai even has similar hair to Cecilia.
Huh that’s very weird
One of my favorite parts of pegasus is that in the Japanese dub he speaks broken japanese to emphasize the fact that he's american. A lot of character in dubs speak broken english but i feel like you rarely see broken japanese
Bravo Kamen-Boy… quite the fabulous performance. Of course, the subject matter demands it.
The Relinquished also added to it
Pegasus and Dartz were made very well in this regard.
Ikr it's amazing. Not sure if Step Up was in there but it's another epic one from 4kids yugioh.

I always liked Pegasus. He was one of my favorite characters in Yu-Gi-Oh. I also really like his toon monsters and Relinquished/Thousand Eyes Restrict.
The fact that I was writing a fic about him just yesterday...
It's a fic introducing an OC I created in my head, Pegasus's daughter.

@25:56 pronounced YOUR-ID-ES-SEE Kamen-boy
Honestly I just love hearing you talk about Yugioh. I’d watch an entire series just talking about your favorite cards or archetypes.
Yu-Gi-Oh did not have to go so hard having so many amazing voice actors for the first few seasons.
Toon was probably the first archetype introduced in the tcg .
XD back in the day all the kids in my playground wanted a full toon deck.
Good old memories
Excelent video bro. Hope u Have a Nice weekend.
I think that was Harpy Lady, which was episode 6?
What an insidious force.
....And the further it goes with the corruption shown by Millennium Eyes Restrict. Idk about relinquished anima. Its a neat support though.

In the manga when pegasus told yugi he wanted the puzzle, pharoh asks him about his knowledge about the items
And pegasus told him they were created by an unknown means but were designed for manipulating and corrupting souls and thus the millennium items contain a powerful evil.

Just like vetrix

The voice actor of Pegasus is the same one who voices James in Pokémon, he does such an amazing job.
YUGIBOY~ Thanks for making this vid man. I can't wait for you to cover Bakura. That's gonna be a trip and awesome :D
We need more Toon monsters. I already have a toon version of myself.
You can't go wrong with the Toon Soundtrack, the perfect mix of comedy and menace.
Thank you for going into detail about the differences between the Anime & Manga versions of Pegasus. Too many Yu-Gi-Oh! fanatics keep trying to merge the Anime & Manga timelines together for some reason while deliberately ignoring any key differences between them.
It's so nice to see more pegasus love .
As a mythology nerd the pronunciation killed my ears. For anyone wondering it's yr·i·duh·see💜
Pegasus was such a fun villain
Pegasus is proof that Bugs Bunny would be *terrifying* as a real person.
Crawford
@@lightningstrxu I have a headcanon based on the dub that Cecelia called him Max when they were younger. I just think it's cute.
Relinquished doesn’t need buffing as it was a great card for a very long time.
yuuuuugi boiii.
Well made, a very entertaining and memorable villain for sure!
YUGI BOY! Great video man.
