Illustrator Script Dimensions

- JavaScript for Illustrator specifies dimensions and other properties of selected elements. Also available for InDesign. See links below for webpage and video. Video tutorial is Windows. Script works the same both macOS and Windows.
- Element dimensions, each selected or combined
- Distance between elements
- Includes scale option
- Corner radius
- Corner angle
New features as of version 5.2:
- Paragraph style and swatch names sorted alphabetically case insensitive
- Distance selection 1 is always left-most selection instead of element stacking order
- Extension lines and text offsets allow negative values to put measurements inside elements
- Paragraph style "None" set font manually
- Measurement units now selected in the interface instead of coming from the ruler
- Select the measurement units "style"

Version 6.3 fixes dimension lines inheriting dashed stroke of selection. Now dimensions lines are set to solid always.
Big update today, for both Dimensions scripts (InDesign & Illustrator). After user requests, I've made measurements units selected in the interface, instead of from the ruler. And I've added "styles" of how units are expressed (i.e. ft + in, feet + inches, or the marks ' + "). If you've downloaded either script earlier, you should download the latest version 3.8, on the website now.
Thank you so much for this! If you could add the option of no units as well like mm, Millimeters and NONE, that would be great!
@@yutatoga2128 You're the second user to make this request, so it has moved up the to-do list. Just finished what I think will work. I've added to the "Style" drop-list, "None". This will simply omit any label of what the units are. However, this could be a problem for Feet & Inches. So I made that put a single dash between feet and inches when set to None. I've posted the updated version 4.7 to my website. Just Illustrator for now, and haven't updated the documentation on the page yet. I'll do that and the InDesign version once I'm sure this works OK. Please download and try it. Let me know, today if possible, that it works as expected. Adding the feature "seems" pretty safe, but as always, touching code so often leads to something else blowing up. So please report back ANY problems the change creates. Thank you for the suggestion, it makes the script better.
@@wc7 Wow,,, so fast! Thank you sooo much for the super quick update, it worked like a charm! In my case when I do sketches for architectural drawings with Illustrator, I make everything in mm dimensions, so this None option is a space saver! You made my day!!
To anyone who downloaded versions 3.4 or 3.5... there was an error introduced, now fixed in 3.6. Actually, everyone should download the latest version. There was a issue when using undo, Illustrator doesn't undo the paragraph style, but does undo its color (leaves it blank, white). Made a fix in v3.4 but it created a new error. All good now in v3.6, on website now. THANK YOU to users who alerted me of the problem. It's your help that makes these scripts great.

That's a cool idea for an addition. It could be an added tab "Area". How should the result look? Just text in the center of the selected element? Or text with dimension lines pointing out the edges, up, down, left and right from center? (thinking out loud here). I'm open to all suggestions.
Aligned dimensioning can also be added .Its very important !

i have some problem with font size, can you edit this script a bit and add font size editing function?
Script has font size. See in video time 6:07 explanation of paragraph style button "Define," opens window to set font, size, and swatch. Also can edit the paragraph style after making dimensions to any font, size, or swatch desired, and all existing dimensions are updated.
@@wc7 yes but there is only one option (Dimensions) and the define button is disabled
@@khalilg3979 It is because the script was run once, then undo, and the script launched again. A bug in Illustrator on undo leaves behind the paragraph style. Because it already exists, the define button is disabled and choice is to use the existing style "Dimensions." This is normal behavior. Either delete the paragraph style "Dimensions," or edit it to another font, size, etc.

Not at this time. I'll consider an update to handle it.
it is not supported illustrator cc. when runs illustrator quite.
It works in CC. What version are you using? Both script version, and Illustrator version number (About Illustrator). Also, what language is the operating system? If script was not download recently (4.0 latest version), download again from the website and try again. If it still doesn't work I can make a test debug file to reveal what is causing the failure.

@@wc7 I already downloaded it and install also. It shows Illustrator script tool bar. When i start it selecting a object (it shows me a windows also). then quite illustrator. One more request sir if possible pls make a script for nesting imposition and die line cutting mark. Thank you so much.
@@debnathmriganka2010 Script development began on CC 2021 and continues on CC 2022. CC 2017 isn't too old so not sure why it gives a problem. I can't install 2017, no longer available on my subscription. However, I do have CS6 and tested there, it runs OK. You have not said if error messages are reported. To track down the problem, I have prepared a debug version that will report steps completed in a palette on screen. If not all steps are reported, that tells me where it is hanging and can go from there. @@debnathmriganka2010 I am working on a script for "ganging" rectangular items for large format output (a client is paying me to create it). At this point for InDesign but doing same in Illustrator is not difficult changes. This is complex to accomplish so it may be some time still before I have the script working right. However, know that it will not be a free script. Too many hours of coding to give away. For true "nesting," where item bounds cross into open areas of other items, that is even more complex, and if I do ever accomplish that in script, it too will be a paid script, likely even higher price due to the complex nature of code required to make it happen.
I downloaded the Illustrator script and got it to work on my Mac. It works when I select some objects, but for some reason, when I select other objects, it does not display dimensions. Thoughts ???? Thanks !

Every time I run the script it shut down illustrators and said bnot responding ..i need the script for a lot of design considering I am using 2017 version
What version of the script? Will the script at least display its interface? At the bottom is the version number.

See Section 2 Lines and Text. In sub-section Lines, choose the swatch. For text, either define a paragraph style and set swatch there, or set paragraph to "None" and the button "Define" (for paragraph style) changes to "Font". Click the button and make the font any face, size, style, or swatch you prefer. All of this is exhaustively explained on the website, so please, try to refer to that rather than ask me to repeat myself on a user-by-user basis.
If cutline is dashed it gives result also with dashed lines. Is there any solutions to change it?
Great catch. I might have never known otherwise. I try to test all situations, but something always slips by. The fix wasn't difficult and is done. Version 6.3 dimensions lines are always solid now. Thank you for the feedback, and for watching.
how do I show induvial line dimensions like for example I have a L shape?
Select the elements and run the script. For an "L" shape I'd imagine all you want is left and bottom.

Hi. An error is displaying on Illustrator 27.1. After clicking OK, this appears: "Line 960: null is not an object"
What version of script? (bottom of interface) And is it trial or paid version?

@@litopicasso Just as the page says, "Perpetual". Lifetime. Forever. Use and updates, unless changes so drastic the script becomes an entirely new product. To continue doing what it does today, in future versions of Illustrator, free updates. Someday it may become a subscription model. But not yet. For now single-user perpetual license.

Im running into an issue where the height is wrong. I have an item that is 10 ft and a few inches for the height but it shows as 1ft 0.106inches
