Match of the day 2007/2008 - Final Day Relegation Battle

  • My next upload revisits the final day of the 2007/08 Premier League season, a historic day where Manchester United clinched their 17th league title, marking their 10th since the inception of the Premier League in 1992. However, for many across the country, the focus wasn't solely on the title race between Manchester United and Chelsea. The real drama unfolded at the other end of the table, where three teams fought desperately to avoid relegation, with only one able to survive, while the other two faced the prospect of dropping down to the then-named Coca-Cola Championship.
    Fulham, in the driving seat after recent results, faced Portsmouth, who were preparing for the FA Cup Final the following week. Fulham knew that a win at Fratton Park would secure their Premier League status. Behind them on goal difference, Reading stood ready to capitalize on any slip-up. They faced Derby County, a team that had endured a woeful season. Should both Fulham and Reading stumble, Birmingham City, in the most precarious position and one point adrift, still harbored hopes of survival as they hosted Blackburn Rovers at St Andrews, now known as St Andrews at Knighthead Park.
    Jonathan Pearce, Simon Brotherton, and Steve Wilson guided viewers through a day filled with high stakes, drama, and raw emotion.

      @tombardsley3081 Год назад +13

      The team simply wasn’t ready for the premier league and didn’t have the quality. We got pretty lucky in the playoff final Vs West Brom who were dominating the game. The owners decided to put the club up for sale in the summer which therefore meant they gave no real backing to the manager when it came to transfers. We were beaten to players we wanted by the other promoted clubs eg both Kenwyne Jones and Craig Gordon. I disagree that they didn’t show fight. The team did try their best (they just weren’t good enough ability wise), unlike future bad prem teams eg Aston Villa in 15-16 who were an established premier league club but went down due to poor management and the players didn’t care. They really should have beaten Derby’s points record if not for Man City being generous.

      @@classicsportclassictiyl8547 unbelievable. I remember them having a decent side that was horrible to play against, full of 'players with character', weird that you can win a cup and go down. Wigan being another example of course.

      @@roolaing Injuries certainly didn't help, but the team truly fell apart during a crucial match, which was ironically against Fulham. Had they won, they could have turned things around, but a 2-0 loss left them in a woeful state.

      At least you didn’t say worst ever premier league team. Cos there are some other contenders that rival derby. Eg Villa in 15-16 and Huddersfield 18-19 - both of whom should have beaten derby’s points record. I’ll throw in Sheffield United in 20-21 as well.

      You omitted the later part of the 2010/11 season when Roy Hodgson reappeared at West Brom. It seemed quite abrupt when Jeremy Peace dismissed Roberto Di Matteo and appointed Hodgson, but he steered West Brom to mid-table safety. The following year, they achieved a top-half finish, which included a notable 5-1 victory over their fierce Black Country rivals, Wolves.
