A similar effect happens on a stretch of the Amazon, where two tributaries merge. Also In the south seas where the Atlantic and the pacific flow wide by side. There the effect is due to the very high salinity of the Atlantic versus the lower salinity of the Pacific; not so with the rivers since they are fresh water.
