“I do NOT have rice…half the time” that was so cute. Made me laugh. You’re sweet. My daughter has Tourette’s. She is about to graduate high school. She is a very introverted child and that had been an added challenge when she has to “blink on a face” (stares and blinks hard- several times-) and someone thinks she staring at them. Among other tics. The last thing she wants is attention and I think that’s probably the case for most people with Tourette’s. Certainly not attention for their tics. I will never forget her first tics when she was five. Smelling people. Yes smelling people (teacher called me about that one) and a complex one where she would throw her arm out and jerk it back then smell her pinky. And THEN click her tongue and flick her finger. Lasted about a year. The SCARIEST one was she would have to reach out and touch things she knew were hot. I had to keep her away from the kitchen when cooking. She would just reach out and tap the stove. Thankfully we were able to prevent injury and this only lasted 6 months. I’m going to share your channel with her. Thanks for sharing!

@@rachel-in-the-208 I have always told my daughter it’s something that makes her unique. Since day one of diagnosis. And it gives her an ability to relate to others with unique issues. Without it she wouldn’t be able to put herself in their shoes. She is a more enriched empathic person because of her Tourettes. We have always chosen to try to be thankful for that gift. To this day she says she doesn’t think she would magically get rid of it if that were possible. It’s a part of who she is. And she is wonderful.

@@erintraicene7422 My niece has been through A LOT - including a very serious concussion when she was younger. She may may also have ADHD and mild autism (and anxiety and depression) Also, she had to stay home and homeschool most of her senior year because the teachers said her condition was too “disruptive” … so it’s just a lot!! She is coping the best she can.

I remember hearing a group of kids make fun of a girl who had Tourettes at school, saying she must be faking because one of her tics was barking. At the time I was just so angry, I couldn't believe they were actually laughing about such a debilitating thing. My cousin was diagnosed with Tourettes a few years ago and practically became a hermit, almost never showing up to family events because she was embarrassed about her tics. Those kids' behavior just makes it harder for people with this syndrome, as not only do they have to worry about often painful tics, they also face bullying and harassment because of it. However, my cousin is living her best life and recently got married, just going to show that there is hope.

Luckily it went away again after a few weeks.

yeah, she reminds me of me too. i have anxiety tics, where if i get a surge of anxiety or get close to an attack, the tics will start happening. it's only an occasional behavior, nowhere near tourette's at all, but makes me more empathetic toward people with tourette's. i can imagine having to deal with it all day, every day, and just the thought hurts on some level. i've also been having muscle jerks and spasms lately bc of a new medication. i have to pretend like i don't see people reacting to me. it's embarrassing and can be painful (one jerk made my shoulder pop the other day). the only thing that would make sense is that these people are doing it for attention, possibly bc they want some kind of social validation or as part of a bigger mental health problem (attention-seeking is a common symptom among personality disorders). they either don't think about the harm they're doing or they don't care bc they're getting the views they want. esp those that respond aggressively toward questions like "are you diagnosed?"

I so relate to these tics. My first vocal tic was the velociraptor call from Jurassic Park. My most common vocal tic is a dog bark or the f word. People have asked me emphatically if I have a puppy in my backpack. My most recent vocal tic is to say "Turtle!" in a high pitched voice that I playfully used for my stuffed turtle, Myrtle, that turned into a tic. Every time I'm walking along the river with someone and they point out a turtle, it triggers my turtle tic. Kinda cute but also kinda annoying.

Your explanation of your rice/communists and chess tic made me giggle. I never laughed/giggled at your tics in all your other videos but simply your explanation of your tics here was funny to me. It also truly made me realize that you aren't thinking about it and that it isn't neccesarily related to anything in your life/something that has happened. I totally see and understand ticcing is annoying, sometimes painful and unwanted in your life. I wish you wouldn't have to deal with this. But I want to say thank you, for creating the content you do. You being so open is refreshing and brings people closer together.

I hope this isn’t offensive to say, but while watching these videos I’ve actually felt very…understood? I have diagnosed OCD, and while it’s definitely different from Tourette’s (ocd is characterized by compulsions that are preformed by an individual to keep something bad from happening), I understand what it’s like to have impulses that you can’t control. For instance, I have a compulsion where I feel like I HAVE to bend my neck upwards towards the ceiling until it hurts, and I feel like if I don’t do it something bad will happen. I understand it looks weird and that other people probably wonder why I do it, but I can’t not do it. It’s been really interesting to learn more about Tourette’s syndrome through these videos

    ‘Jelly on a plate,
    Jelly on a plate,

No idea if that is where you know it from but it is what immediately came to mind for me.

I overthink, and and spend a good deal of time in hospitals, so I assumed maybe RICE was an acronym related to the grimace/disgust tic you also have. Which now I know: some tics may seem linked, but in reality are just happening at roughly the same time because ticcing can trigger more ticcing.

I don’t have Tourette’s but I do have three kind of tics. My most common is that the upper outer corner of my left eye will twitch randomly. Have no idea why and I find it annoying unless the stats align and and it happens after someone says something ridiculous or annoying because then I can tell them they made my eye twitch.
My second most common is that I make a double clicking sound but that one is most likely due to anxiety because I mainly do it when I’m anxious and half the time I don’t even notice.
My least common is a mild jerk of my torso to the right. It’s so slight that it doesn’t add my driving and you wouldn’t notice unless you’re watching for it.
I can’t imagine having multiple tics that actually affected me so I can’t fully understand what you go through but the torso one scared me the first time it happened because I didn’t do it intentionally.
I respect you for being so open about your life and this might seem insensitive but I really like how you say hi and I’ve got rice, it actually sounds familiar like I’ve heard the rice one before somewhere. I’m not saying this in a “oh that’s so funny” way and I hope you don’t take it that way. It’s just bringing up a sense of familiarity but I’m not sure where from.

I have high functioning autism, but hardly felt high functioning when I was young because I would echo on a daily basis. It could be something I heard or said once, but then became a compulsion I had to say at moments of high stress and anxiety- I.e. every morning before school- grade A honor roll student yet I couldn’t handle the sensory and social aspects so in these hour or two long overloads/meltdowns Id have these “ritual” like things I had to say counting to 13 and then walking away- was one of them. Weird I know haha. Another was blasphemy which I absolutely hated and was terrified of because I grew up in a conservative Christian home and truly adored Jesus, so I was convinced I was going to hell on a daily basis. I would also echo and mirror any friends I hung out with, my NT sister truly hated this one. As an adult these are all distant memories but I can nevertheless relate with saying things you have to say but have no clue why or are even ashamed of!

it's nice to hear your vocal tics come from nothing.thank you for sharing, i thought i was alone. i just have ADHD, i don't have tourettes.mine came from nothing as i know???and i felt weird about them.my long-time one was "let's get married" and my current one is "kill yourself" none of these display what i truly think or feel at all!!!! not even a bit!!!!! i've not felt either of those things about myself or others, in any way, i hate it. and it's not prominent in my head,, but it does happen, when i'm having troubles with my symptoms, which is usually at certain points at work through the day, or when i'm alone in bed trying to sleep.or if i wake up in the night and have racing thoughts.

I feel like you can tell when the vocal tics are genuine because from you they are kind of throaty and monotone - you can tell when you talk about it vs a tic.

Hey. I’m from the UK so I’m not sure if you’ve ever heard this nursery rhyme song in the US but there is actually a nursery rhyme song that says jelly on a plate, wibble wobble jelly on a plate!. I remember hearing it when I was in nursery, I think it’s called Kindergarten in America. So maybe you heard it in the past and that’s where it’s come from. Like I said in the comments on a different video, I had a brain injury 10 years ago where the Axons in my brain were damaged and I still have to see a neurologist and neuropsychologist as I still suffer extreme symptoms. But what’s so odd is, I’ve never watched a RUclips video of someone with tics before and I came across you as you are an inspiration and a amazing person but since watching a few of your videos I now feel mentally foggy and exhausted. Like when you drink alcohol and it feels like a dizzy build up of pressure in your brain. So that’s a new one for me!. I’ve never experienced this before. Another symptom of my brain injury is, it’s like your brain goes to sleep, but you can still see everything. It’s so weird. And I’ve not experienced that in 2 years but after watching your videos it’s happening. But I can’t go to sleep as I need to go and pick my kids up from school soon 😅. So I’m now wondering if there’s some kind of neurological link. Like seeing others who are suffering from tics affects me neurologically. In the last 6 months I’ve started to have brain seizures at night and I remember watching a documentary on tv last year of a woman in the uk who was in her 40’s and suffered similar symptoms to me and she actually developed turrets syndrome. I was pretty shocked because I didn’t know you could develop it once you’re an adult. It’s obviously a very tiring thing though I can see. But well done for educating others with your videos. All the best

Man. Idk why people wish they have tourettes and use it to fake for attention. Its seems very annoying to have to do that constantly (my heart goes out to you! I just discovered your channel and ive been very interested in learning about this disorder, you seem like such an amazing person!)
Also the "ugh" tic seems the most annoying since you scrunch up and such. I feel like itd make your neck and mouth sore from the muscle tension.

This was kind of interesting to listen to because I have something sort of similar that happens to me even though I do not have Tourette’s. I’m on the autism spectrum as well as having pretty severe ADHD and I go through periods where I get “urges” to do things similar to the way you were describing it where it’s just something you have to do even if it’s not pleasant. And mine are not all the time one of them happens only when I’m anxious but I’ll flick my thumb against my pointer finger pretty rapidly…. I also have this feeling sometimes that there’s a lot of pressure behind my eyes and I feel the urge to squeeze them or press them to make the feeling go away. And then there is the worst urge I get (that only happens every three months or so) is this feeling like I can’t get a deep enough breath and so I have to take these deep breathes that I try pulling in in different ways in order to satisfy the feeling in my lungs that I actually took a deep breath….differently to the finger flicking thing this one actually causes a great deal of anxiety and stress and when I start doing it it lasts for weeks and is nearly every 10 seconds that I have to do it…plus my chest ends up feeling really bruised the entire period of time because I’m just constantly forcing in these weird breaths. Anyway…like I said i don’t have Tourette’s but I am neurologically different so it kind of makes me wonder how many overlaps there are. The more vids of yours I watch the more I find myself relating to your experiences on deeper levels. Hmm. Cool.

    Hello !
I am leaving a comment here since your last video has the comments disabled (i can understand why)
I don't have any diagnosed disorders but I sympathize with all the hurtfull things and difficulties having disorder imply.
I think you are very brave to do what you do, has I have noticed that you can be more easily confronted with idiots.
To be honest, I am very surprised that people believed for so long that Tic & roses had really Tourette syndrome. It was so fake ! And I find that most of the time, you don't need much time to recognise fake people. Thoses people are disgusting and should be punished severely for lying about serious conditions that can result from traumatic experiences (like DID), spreading falses informations about disorders and defamation of the braves people like you that work hard to make society change its perception on real affected people.
I wish you can find more suportives people that idiots and haters who must live a quite pitifull life if they feel proud to make feel alone.
I hope you managed to sleep well in the end

Thanks for showing that tics are not something desirable. I have tics related to my fibromyalgia. It’s hard just to type this message as my fingers tic all over the place. My scariest thing about tics came a few months back when I was removing a pot of pasta from the stove.. my hand ticked and I almost dropped the pot all over me. Lesson learned. Now I just remove the pasta and wait for the water to cool.

Is it ok to ask someone with Tourette’s how best to engage? I’d rather acknowledge and then learn the appropriate way to respond (or not respond) than either pretend I know how to, or pretend it’s not there.

I don't have tourettes, however, sometimes I find myself mimicking certain words that people say. Sometimes I don't even realise I'm doing it. Especially if they have an accent. I've done it with family, friends and even at work. So I do understand the copying what someone says...

  • @erykac6146

Ahhh I get the British accent one 😅 "what are you doing" in an accent and im just like?? Who and where did i hear this that I latched onto it 😅 it's not a weird one, but I say bitch too often. Like the urge is constantly in my throat and it's either by itself, or throws itself into the conversation and I'm always Embarrassed bc like. I'm not calling you a b*tch, it's just my TS 😔
im glad you share your experiences and educational as well. I've wanted to myself but with like you said, all the tiktok stuff, I'm not really comfortable putting myself out there anymore since I don't have a platform and I don't want to deal with others thinking I'm faking bc they just assume everyone on tiktok is a faker. Even though those in the community do recognize and follow my content 😅 I love to see TS creators thrive bc we deserve to live our normal life too :)

Would you say that holding in a tic is somehow like holding in a hiccup? Im just trying to get an understanding of what you feel like when you suppress them ? Of course holding in a tic is far from it but it’s good to educate myself 😊🙃

I don't have tics, but sometimes brain comes up with really weird verbal stims that make no sense but just feel nice to say (and occasionally it becomes almost a compulsion to repeat it for like a week because it'll be the stim I'm craving that alleviates sensory overload) so like... it makes sense that brain just comes up with random phrases as tics too. -shrug-

Jelly on a plate is a really common rhyme young children and upwards say and joke about with here in the UK (England specifically). I think in the US you call it Jell-o? But that’s what we call jelly and it goes ‘Jelly on a plate, jelly on a plate, wibble wobble, wibble wobble, jelly on a plate’. I swear we ALL repeat it when we gather and have jelly for dessert no matter how old we get, it’s catchy to all of us and we don’t even all have tourettes so I can totally see why this can end up as a long lasting tic!

Let me preface this by saying I do NOT have Tourette's. That being said, I am Autistic and a lot of the times seeing tics will trigger me to stim. When I'm super stressed out I'll repeat "Do you wanna cookie" which is... annoying. Can anyone explain the main differences between tics and stimming? Also Autistic folks can often have echolalia too.

    • @littlearies3862
      @littlearies3862 2 года назад

In my best understanding, tics are completely involuntary. You can try to withhold them, but it won't last long and can hurt.
Think of stimming as scratching an itchy spot, while a tic is sneezing.
I don't have anything diagnosed (despite my own inklings of some sort of neurodivergency) but I do have tics and apparently stim a lot. 🤷‍♀️ Like if I get over-stimulated, a stim I have is aggressively flapping my hands/wrists. While it can be compulsive and I don't realize I'm doing it, I could theoretically stop it the moment I realize. But, with a tic, it is a compulsive movement my body does even if I dont want it to or am trying to stop it. Saying "boom" is a tic I have a lot, some nerve in my body making me often scare those around me with the mimiking of a bomb in a high-pitch tone. 🤣😅 I can't prevent it from happening and I probably should never go to an airport because of it.

Is it possible for this condition to diminish over time or disappear completely? When I was a younger child up to about the age of ten maybe, I would squeak from the back of my throat among a few other subtle things like clemching my feet in my shoes. That's actually why I was reading about the condition today, out of curiosity. I am 29 now and haven't experienced anything in like two decades. It has been too long for me to recall exactly how it felt but I do remember it was like more than a habit, but maybe just a nervous thing or somethimg. Jaja. Interesting condition. Thanks for sharing.
