I knew someone in high school with Tourette’s. He was such a kind young man and it’s a shame kids in school are oftentimes horrible people because I know high school was hard for him. He rarely could sit through a whole class because he was embarrassed that he was being distracting and teachers have even told him to leave. People need to get a grip because it’s not like people can help it and we, as a society, should just be able to go on with our lives as if nothing different is going on.
I guess the one thing I’m curious about is if you regularly see a neurologist for your condition? I used to work for a neurologist but never had someone come in with Tourette’s. Do you meet with a neurologist for progress updates? Are there any kind of treatments available? Have you pursued any treatments?
I don’t know you at all but you seem fun and sweet and I hope you’re happy with who are are and that you don’t give a crap what anybody thinks 😬❤️

Recently I've noticed a neck jerking that I can't control. A lot of times I don't even notice at first that I'm doing it. Yesterday I was looking up info on tics to try and find out why it was happening, and then it got really bad. Like a tic attack or something? I'm not sure. But it was the worst it's ever been before and it lasted for like 20 minutes and by the time I finally was able to stop it my neck was hurting so bad I was crying. A little bit ago it happened again, not as bad as yesterday's but still worse than they usually are. I have anxiety and some other mental illnesses, so I think maybe that's it...

    • @ancient4263
      @ancient4263 2 года назад +11

Anxiety triggers tics and heightened emotions (especially stress but also excitement etc.) Makes them significantly worse and may be the only time you notice them but if you have tics and anxiety you'd still be diagnosed with a tic disorder unless there's a different underlying condition (or medication that possibly causes tics) that causes it then its still a tic disorder. Talking or thinking about tics makes them get worse and neck jerks are one of the most common motor tics (it was my first one, and my partner who has tourettes' ) and motor tics almost always develop before vocal tics.
I can't remember where I was going with this I think I had a point but I forgot so idk if any of this information is actually useful my bad 😭

    • @ancient4263
      @ancient4263 2 года назад +11

Oh yeah I was trying to say the distinction between tic disorders and anxiety tics is definitely getting blurred! There's a lot of research to say they shouldn't be separated
If you still have persistent tics that affect your life in any way its worth looking into tic disorders, coping mechanisms, and eventually a diagnosis

It's so complicated, I have autism and ADHD and so I've had echolalia, palilalia, echopraxia, palipraxia, and many menta tics (do not know if they have a name) for a very long time... But recently I watched a documentary about tourettes and since then I have multiple tics a day... So I don't know if it's my autism and ADHD that just got hyperfixated on it, or if the documentary triggered my tics or I don't know.
Though I called my local neurology service and they didn't know who to refer me to cause they had never gotten a call from an adult with tics apparently. Anyway, they are not very bothering, just wanting to make sure everything is fine, otherwise I can do anything I want, I just say/do funny things sometimes

I've had a non-verbal tick for about 7 years now and I've never been to GP about it because I'm embarrassed about it. But now after watching your video I know I probably have a form of Tourettes so just having a label to put on it makes me feel better about myself. It gets worse when I'm stressed or have anxiety. It also gets worse when I get the feeling someone notices the tick and this makes me do it more when I'm around them. Its awful and this stresses me out even more. Its not nice to have it can get you down so bad. It makes you feel like you have something wrong with yourself mentally and I suppose you have :( But just knowing others have it and I'm not alone is a HUGE help so thanks for the video. Some ticks DO GO AWAY when you have no stress and you stop thinking about it that's what I've found. So you might not have the problem for life but you will always remember it because its apart of YOU but just forget it and be happy and it will go away. I HAVE TOURETTES and if you have to tell someone that because they pick up on a tick just tell them what you have and be PROUD of it. Dont let it get you down.

I've had tics (motor only) since at least about age 10 I think. I never knew what they were and was ok at hiding them in public.
I'm 42 now and I THINK I have what's called Tourettic OCD. I've had more traditional OCD since age 6 or so, with the rituals of touching things as a way of trying to control things or "something bad will happen", but as I've gotten older, the rituals have lessened (I'm too lazy to touch an item 20 items! lol) but the tics have worsened.
    My tics are...
    - Clenching the right side of my jaw / upper neck,
    - Clenching my right upper arm muscle until it trembles,
    - Nodding my head about 5-10 times so quickly it looks more like a tremble,
    - Quickly and forcefully contracting my upper and lower stomach muscles (this one is exhausting and the most annoying and frequent),
    - Sticking my tongue out and up to touch my top teeth. It feels like I need to "stretch" it,
    - Blinking one or both eyes very hard and repeatedly, as it feels like normal blinks aren't enough (the left eye is the worst),
    - Quickly touching my right thumb to just beside my mouth, making a kiss expression with my lips, and then giving a thumbs up,
    - Rolling and widening my eyes as they feel they need to be "relaxed".
The only time I don't do these is when I'm asleep or REALLY sleepy. I've got depression, anxiety, BPD and PTSD also and apparently some of the SSRI anti-depressants like Zoloft are supposed to help with OCD, but nothing's ever made a difference to my tics.
Thank you so much for making this video! 😍

Hi Zara! I love your video! I had a question. I have had tics for 7 months and I fall into the Tourette's Syndrome categorizes. I might self diagnose myself with Tourette's this year or the beginning of next year. I was wondering if it's okay to do that because they don't really hurt me unless I hit or bang things, and they don't cause a lot of problems with school work, but sometimes socializing with strangers is difficult.
(Sorry this is really long) Another thing is that my mom thinks I am faking my tics for attention because I always suppress around my family since they have said that and I'm not sure what to do at this point. In the US I think I'm too young to go to the doctor by myself and I don't know when I'll go again. Do you have any tips that would make it easier to tell my parents that my tics are not something I would ever want to fake?

I think I might actually have One(1) tic. I never knew what it was and always called it a hiccup when trying to explain it to people. It's just like a loud, drawn out hiccup that I might do a couple times a day or not at all. Definitely no kind of disorder but with all the sort of gasping and airway tics that some people seem to have, maybe it's some sort of diaphragm twitch. I've always wondered what it is.

I've got Tardive Tourettism from an antipsychotic I was on. It's often permanent and I've had it for five years. I have both motor and vocal tics. It's related to Tardive Dyskinesia

what if you are diagnose with chronic motor tics but then about a year ago i started to vocal tics and also continue to have motor tics

I only have one vocal tic, it’s the word, “potion” and I do a weird move, the same one every time (idk how to explain it) this vocal tic is way less common than my others.
and I have multiple motor tics , jerking my neck to the side, making my arms do weird movements (like bunch up), and scrunch my neck up.
Had for just over a year.
Not thinking about getting diagnosed because it is not too bothersome. If you read this, sorry if I wasted your time, and also thank you 😊

For the past couple of months I've been random jerking, Usually my neck or arms. I've made random noises since I was a child and when I went to my mom about it she said its probably just in my head. I feel bad for looking into it more but I had a feeling that it's more than that. Watching this helped cause I never knew that ADHD could cause tics and I've been diagnosed with that since I was around 5. I'm going to get my mom to find a doctor to help.

I’ve had tics (to my knowledge at least) for about a year (possibly not quite…) and I hopefully will have a referral soon so I can figure out what I have…
I do have multiple of both kinds of tics so it seems like I have Tourette’s (unless I don’t have a tic disorder, but something else)

How important is it to get a diagnosis. I’ve had vocal and motor tics for about 3 months now. It might’ve started before, but I didn’t recognize them as tics until the started rapidly developing and I got vocal ones. I’d have weird shivers and my arm would jerk, which is now much more pronounced (I just punch myself or my chair). My friend with Tourette’s says it developed really fast, and I think interacting with them might’ve contributed to that, since we’d often set each other off. They developed after I had a panic attack where I just had motor tics for like half and hour straight, due to a lot of unresolved stress over about a month from personal issues.
My tics are mostly active when I’m in an overstimulating environment, such as in a loud room or around certain lighting. For example, some classes at school set me off, but they are much less active at home, to the point that my dad doesn’t even know about them. (I also repress them around him as best I can) Is this normal? Can it contribute to a different diagnosis?
When they are really active, they can respond to speech and somewhat mimic a conversation. They’ve even l had conversations with my friend’s tics. How does that work. Could I just be what I subconsciously or consciously expect them to respond with, or could my tics actually be responding language?
People asked me if I named them because the often seemed like they are/have their own personality. I named them Sherman, and often refer to them as he/him. Is this a healthy response? My friends with Tourette’s also named theirs. Could personifying them make them worse in any way? I like that I can separate the things my tics say from myself more by personify them, and I think it makes it easier for other people too.
Does anyone have tips for dealing with or repressing tics? My friend told me that singing helps with theirs, and it works for me, but in most environments where I’d want to stop ticking bursting into song wouldn’t be appropriate. I can usually repress vocal tics if I need to, but it usually worsens motor tics, especially in my neck. Any tips are welcome.
I don’t have many issues caused by my tics, as my friends are understanding, but I worry about being a distraction in serious settings, such as church. I’m also in theater, and our focus right now is children’s musicals. I don’t want to have to explain to some poor teachers why I screamed “b****a** wh***” at 600 children. Also, motor and vocal tics can get in the way of my acting. We’ve only had one performance since my tics developed, and thankfully the weren’t too active so I could repress them while I was on stage. That might not always be the case though so I’d love to hear any other methods anyone has.
I’d also like to share one mechanism I have, but it’s for a specific tic. I have a breath-holding tic, which has caused serious issues where I’ve been unable to breath while doing something relatively taxing, and nearly passing out. I can usually stop if by tilting my chin up, then trying to lightly exhale. If you have a tic like this, then maybe try it?

Idk if I’ve been influenced by TikTok or other people I’ve known that had tics. But I have muscles twitch’s, neck movements and vocal tics. 8 feel like I can control it but, It just comes and I keep telling myself that I’m faking it. I’ve had for only a few months and everyone says I’m being influenced, Please answer this for me because I really need to know if I’m doing this on purpose without noticing! Love your vids!

Hi Zara. There was a demand on Captionfy for this content to be translated into Brazilian Portuguese. I did the voluntary translation, but it's not in this video yet. Could you include it here, please? That would help me professionally in terms of building my portfolio as a translator. You are awesome by the way! :-)

Mine are gradually getting worse, and have been since January but they started in around November I think? I’m not too sure. Once I grow the confidence to, I’m hoping to get diagnosis’s of my mental illnesses/health. I think then it’ll help reduce my overthinking into faking this, when I know I’m not.

I'm confused I've always said that I have anxiety tics and I've had it for 3 years now but I have complex tics and i have tic attacks but my tics are off and on I could have tics for 1 month and then there gone with only like 5 for the next month and then they will come back again. Could that still be Tourettes or no I'm just confused.

I've never seen a doctor to be diagnosed with any tic disorder but I have struggled with multiple physical and verbal tics from the time I was a child. one thing nobody sees to mention is how painful the physical tics can be from doing them repetitively. Horrible knots in my muscles and bruising from not being able to control my movements. Is this something other people battle?

I've always had "twitches" as far back as I can remember. They have varied over time. I've had what I guess is vocal tics since at least early teens. Very mild and I can usually hide them in some manner. Never really paid much attention to any of it until I made a friend with tourettes. My twitches got a lot worse. Apparently, I set off his tics and he set off mine and the whole situation made me question if I have tourettes. I was planning to seek medical advice on it but my depression was a much bigger deal so focused on that. It seems that after some months on paroxetine at a fairly high dose, my tics are a lot milder. So, now I'm even more curious but I also don't feel much like dealing with everything to find out.

I don’t know if what I do are tics, honestly… I know that my „blub sound“ is a tic and I do it to „concentrate better“ hahah. It’s one of the few things that are unintentional. I do skin picking too but I don’t know if that’s a tic. I tried to stop but it’s not possible for me. I have sometimes a twitch in the neck.
And the thing that brought me here is that I tend to say dumb stuff when I’m in a happy/agitated mood and I beat myself up after.
