I live in an area in canada where no matter where you are you are either going up or down a hill. Seeing that there is a setting that actually lets the tires spin is super exciting. A lot of people dont understand how bad a vehicle cutting power is on a snowy hill.
From the bulky valley, I have the XLT towing package, and I left my gate key in the house today, there’s a back road around the property that’s hills and covered in about a foot of snow, the Maverick made it through with no problems at all, was going to change it and call a friend to help pull us out if we got stuck, but there was no need.
@@David9dee Definitely the kind of information I like to hear, been thinking about getting a truck for the first time. Nothing to big, but definitely want it for snow, and hearing this is great !

It’s one of the few 2022+ smaller size cars on the road with big power, proper AWD and NO CVT. I’m looking at Mazda 3 turbos, 6-speed wrx’s, and AWD Camrys. For under 30k in some trims it seems just too good to be true.
Really like seeing video shots of the tires and if they’re spinning fully. A lot of the new awd systems don’t push enough torque to the back wheels, it looks like this one does in sand mode. Nice video!
Ford's AWD system is definitely more robust than most others. I had a Ford Edge AWD that at one point sent too much power to the rear in a snow storm the first time I accelerated from a stop lol. Gave me a little fish tail for a second
A lot of people including myself have software called "ForScan" (unfortunate name, I know) which allows you to see and tweak every module in Ford and Mazda vehicles. Many people have accessed the module for the AWD to view the PID data on the clutch packs. Most Ford vehicles have the clutches significantly engaged ~40-60% regardless of wheel spin from a stop, and starts tapering off as speeds approach 40mph. As the system sees wheel spin, it engages the clutches more as needed. I watched it myself in my 2009 Escape hybrid. The system works fantastic, and feels like any true 4X4 I've driven. I can confirm that the clutches are capable of fully locking as well, since I can manually do so with the software and the wheels bind like a 4X4 in a turn.
@@Marker-er3ro Mine is directly connected via USB to my laptop. There are wifi dongles available though. The Escapes lost the lock button in 2008, though it's pretty much unnecessary unless you're driving in sand for longer distances to keep the clutches cool. Using Forscan to lock the system while offroading would be very inconvenient, but it was a fun experiment.
Yea what I'm learning from watching all your reviews, is that what you want is a traction control that is able to stop the spinning wheel to send power to the one that has traction. However, what you also want is an option to turn traction control totally off, and allow for a lot of wheel spin. Seems to me like new cars are learning the first trick pretty well - but in doing so, forget that sometimes you do want just a lot of spin. Glad to see the Maverick is not one them.
I think the maverick is winning the hearts of many who would have never even given it a second thought without the help of youtube and people who post stuff like this, personally I think ford nailed it and I already see about half a dozen on the road, and 1 santa cruz
Perfect timing, the snow just finished melting after getting a good few inches in my part of Oregon and I was wondering how the Maverick would fare. I continue to be impressed and am strongly considering a Mav to consolidate my 4x4 and commuter back to one vehicle. These tests are doing a great job of convincing me that's possible.
It did pretty good, it spins all the tires and doesn’t cut power off in sand mode. At a certain point of course there is no traction and not much ground clearance and no cars will plow much snow of course. I’d give it an A for an all wheel drive “cheaper” vehicle
This truck becomes more and more impressive every video. I think it’d do just enough for me to go up north hunting (MI) but drive well while living in a city like Grand Rapids or Chicago.
With high end winter tires like Blizzaks, it’d do even much better. I have a 01 4Runner and can drive 22% uphill grades in RWD with my Blizzaks. With all seasons, I can’t even in 4WD.
Yeah real winter tires are way more helpfull in those conditions than all those drive modes. My 1st gen Honda Ridgeline (without any drive modes) with mid-grade winter tires have done better than the Maverick in the video in even worst conditions, we get a lot of snow in the north of Sweden and all weather/season tires will make sure you can't get to work many a time during winter.

Great video. Ford will not be able to make enough of these. The Maverick was not on my radar at all until I started reading into it and watching videos like this one, now I'm ordering one.
I have to admit for an AWD system that of course has no low range, the Maverick is doing much better than I thought it would. Your video series with the Maverick is really pushing me towards a Maverick as a replacement for my daily driver Bronco 2. The fuel savings alone would make it worth while....14-17mpg in my Bronco 2 on a good day VS what the mid to high 20mpg range in the Maverick.
The maverick almost always skips second gear on upshifts and only rarely uses it on downshifts. What Ford should have done is give it a “granny” gear for first and start it in second on road, leaving first gear for when you have it in L mode, slippery, or mud and ruts. For 2025, they went to a 7 speed transmission probably because the 8 speed version is almost always using 7 gears to get to freeway speeds.
Ryan, Happy New Year to you, your team and SUBSCRIBERS!! Dedicated, top quality Winter tires on cheap steel rims are always the answer for drivers who deal with these conditions regularly. And slow the h__ down!!

I just ordered my wife the 2022 Ford Maverick in velocity blue. She wanted a small truck without a huge price. We had to drive a hundred miles away, to just look at one someone else ordered into the Dealership. She originally chose the XL, but I talked her into the XLT with the Luxury and Towing Packages. After some more thought and having FX4 models of other Ford trucks, I called the salesman we ordered through and told him to add the FX4 package. :) So? Was I right about the Falkens? I've had so much fun in the Xtrek with them on. Unstoppable! The Maverick kicked that hill's ass! Note that when you were able to start from a stop, you were digging deep enough to find the road and get traction. Cool vid!
Love this little truck for starters! In my Jeep GC, snow mode will always limit wheel spin and cut power, however for the most fun in the snow I either move it to Sand or leave it in auto and disable traction control. Either mode is great for maintaining momentum. Seems like the Maverick is working the same way.
Starting the year with a Toyota and ending it with a Ford...!!! What a year it has been for everyone..!!! Happy new year to everyone, hoping more videos in the new year with more of Karleena ofcourse..!!:)
I trying to help a friend choose a small truck for her to get around in, and your reviews have helped. The Maverick might be the ticket. My only criticism is, that "foot" of snow didn't even go over your 6" boots! Ha! But really, thanks for the info.
I heard that Toyota is coming out with a pickup to compete with the Maverick. Personally we need a body on frame pickup for our needs. We’re on our 4th Ranger. It’s a 11 XLT super cab with the 4.0 V6 and 5spd auto transmission. It’s a 4X4 as we get 5-6 feet of snow every winter. We mainly use our Ranger for work around our property. I added a K&N intake and a FlowMaster exhaust. I now consistently get 23mpg on the highway with the cruise set on 75mph. Next month it’ll turn 12 years old and we have only 35K miles. We’re in our 50s so I’m sure the family will be fighting over it after we’re dead and gone.
as i live in the western hills of Massachusetts its snow about 5 months a year. i have been watching all your videos on this little maverick and thoroughly impressed. My 16 tucson awd does great with good tires. but i would love the ability to own a small truck with small truck capabilities.
Nicely done with the "sand" mode. My corolla's traction control would be close to that "slippery" mode, and it felt like the car was broken. Just a standard 1-2 inches of powdery snow on an unplowed street would leave any driver screaming in rage. That has permanently affected my perception of all traction control systems when it comes to snow. I had to turn that bullshit off every single day just to make the car perform at the most basic level.
Very good. I didn't know different modes would work better--at times--than slippery mode does. I don't think the average driver is going to know that sand-mode works better in deep/tall snow. Perhaps Ford should add a deep-snow-mode even if it's duplicate of another mode.
Since you have been willing to do some mods (tires) to the Maverick already, how about throwing one of the lift kits on it that are available and then test to see how much better it is off road, if at all.
It did surprisingly alright in Sand Mode. I imagine with decent tires it would do better. I just wish they would make all of the AWD systems/features that are available in the Bronco Sport available in the Maverick. That's all it would need to round it out. I know they want to control the price, fine. Make an FX4 off road model that INCLUDES those extras.
I figured mud/ruts mode would be the most aggressive since in sand you don't really want tires to spin but in mud you gotta spin tires to keep the tread cleaned out.
I find it perfect that this is done here in WA state, I have an Audi 18' A6 and i find this truck just about 5 more inches in length..yeah now I want one.
Thanks for comparing drive modes to those of us who didn't order the FX4 package. Out of curiosity, does the traction control automatically kick back on after reaching a certian speed?
Impressive...impressive! But you are not a Jedi yet! Awesome little truck! Dig the hell out of it! Loved watching it get up the snow road in mud mode! Now if Ford can just start making their own superconductors and get these out to the market in mass!
I think that it should be caveated with any of these style of videos, if the tested truck has the 4K towing package, that the gearing is changed as well. It is something that everyone whom is reviewing this truck is missing completely. Great vids, I hope my comment adds a little more insight in your reviews in the future. Cheers
@@davidgrunklee8407 gearing can change everything. Lower gearing like going from 3:55’s to say a 4:30 is done all the time in the 4wd world for better ability to climb. I’m just saying that it could be a differing factor, not necessarily that it is. Should just be a note of understanding.
Finally got our first couple inches out here in SE MI to test my Bronco Sports Badlands "Slippery" mode. One thing i did notice in slippery mode, is that it seems to hold gears speeding up and downshift faster while slowing down. This let me rely more on engine braking to slow me down at a stoplight / vs applying break alone. I know it doesn't apply to FX4 Maveric but just general info, also noticed slippery mode really worked those 2 independent rear clutches when i hit a patch of deeper snow or ice. Hope Ford puts the badlands system on a "tremor" edition maverick. its pretty fantastic.
I love the video (and the one before it). What I do not understand is how this vehicle compares with what another AWD vehicle would do with the same task. Maybe watching more of your videos will help with that.
The scorpion tires on the FX4 are not known for ice/snow handling and are better daily drivers. I've watched snow/ice videos with some blizzaks or wildpeaks and its alot better handling in ice/snow.
I’m a Mustang guy, but for that price I’m buying a used Tacoma. Actual rwd and off road performance. And being a Toyota I know it will last and hold value. Def not doing any more ecoboom motors. Son had a 17 Fusion Platinum and went thru 2 motors, and no they were not modded.
Pretty impressive for a AWD vehicle. There is a specific merit to the drive modes that allow for that greater wheel spin: due to the high rate wheel spin the tire treads self-clean which allows the tires to "grip" the snow with a clean tread. Worth mentioning. I have a 2023 on order.
@GregH Bummer, you may want to uncancel because your dealer did not cancel with Ford. You had first right to purchase at msrp. Now they will probably ADM +20k when it arrives. That would have helped pay for your Ranger.

where are you/how long did your local Ford dealership say it'd take for yours to arrive?
i'm in la and I ordered mine about a week almost 2 weeks ago
@@mizuslayer The Salesman actually told me a couple of months.
@@davidmills5422 same they told me in LA approx 3 mos, 4 mos max so i'm hoping to have mine by spring. wondering if it's the same on your side but not sure where u are in the country
@@mizuslayer I am in South Carolina and told me about the same time frame. Since we had been talking to them about it for a couple months before order, they are trying to get it built faster. We didn't order one until we could physically see one. We still didn't get to test drive one, cause the one we looked at was someone else's.
@@davidmills5422 ah, copy. thanks
Wow. What a demonstration, and a high quality video. This channel should be getting more traction in the vehicle review world.
WOW that's crazy, wasn't to sure of this little truck a few months ago but I'm really impressed with it now. I use to own a 96 F150 4×4 with the 302 V8 & it's crazy this little truck has more power than mine did, great video.
The more I see this little guy! I want to buy one.
I got a new fx4 maverick and put 255/65R17 wildpeak AT4’s on it with 2” lift. Can’t wait till it starts snowing here to see what it can do in deep snow!
Man everytime i see this Little truck it looks better and better. I hope you guys revisit the Maverick again when the MaverickTremor comes out id love to see how it handles more challangeing off roading
:) So? Was I right about the Falkens? I've had so much fun in the Xtrek with them on. Unstoppable! The Maverick kicked that hill's ass! Note that when you were able to start from a stop, you were digging deep enough to find the road and get traction. Cool vid!
Yeah, they’re great.
I'm impressed, didn't think it'd make it half way up.
This right here was solid testing of this truck! Keep up the good work!
My Wife's 2017 Ford Escape AWD with the 2.0 L ecoboost does Great on the road in snow. I often day dream of giving it a lift and some off road tires.
Just do it she will be happy!
Awesome video! I hope we get more snow videos with this thing!
I've been stuck more than once in Eastern Washington snow. Nice video! Cool little truck
I trying to help a friend choose a small truck for her to get around in, and your reviews have helped. The Maverick might be the ticket. My only criticism is, that "foot" of snow didn't even go over your 6" boots! Ha! But really, thanks for the info.
Very cool to see a dedicated crew making awesome videos out in -17° C. Now wait until it really gets cold 😊
I’m impressed it kept climbing when you first got into it!
With winter tires, this looks like it would work for me! I want one even more.
I can't wait to get my fx4. Won't be until March. Thanks for a great video!!
Do a snow test with the hybrid. If I'm at work and it snows 8" during the day I'm going to be driving in it. I'm not gonna be the only one too.
Or not because lifting a truck made for the road would make it worse and handle like crap
It did better than I expected!
Okay WOW!! Color me impressed.. Well Done, Ryan.. Very aggressive modes. Meaning, they aren't just gimmicky!!!
I loved the triumphant music, at the apex of climb.👍😁
Ford killed it with this mini trucks design and awd system
Man I'm soo hype 🙌🏼 I just got my fx4 maverick. And loving it. I already placed 2inch lift and ko2 tires.
I'd love to see a re-test with proper snow tires on the truck. Because even without them it did wonderfully.
Great test and review. Now if only dealers could get them in stock.
Thanks for comparing drive modes to those of us who didn't order the FX4 package. Out of curiosity, does the traction control automatically kick back on after reaching a certian speed?
great little truck. impressive
Kudo to you my friend this is real testing in the snow up the hill , that is impressive from that maverick truck thanks for that great content.🇨🇦👍👏💪🔥👌
Impressive...impressive! But you are not a Jedi yet! Awesome little truck! Dig the hell out of it!
Loved watching it get up the snow road in mud mode! Now if Ford can just start making their own
superconductors and get these out to the market in mass!
I think that it should be caveated with any of these style of videos, if the tested truck has the 4K towing package, that the gearing is changed as well. It is something that everyone whom is reviewing this truck is missing completely. Great vids, I hope my comment adds a little more insight in your reviews in the future. Cheers
So how would that gearing change have affected this snow test?
That's pretty impressive! My soon to be next truck. I love it. Imagine what it would do with actual winter tires studded!
Good video as usual!. You just made FORD few more Maverick customers😀😀
Cannot wait for mine to be delivered
I want this but in Puerto Rico they are $10,000 higher in price and them mark ups are crazy
I love the video (and the one before it). What I do not understand is how this vehicle compares with what another AWD vehicle would do with the same task. Maybe watching more of your videos will help with that.
Good tire choice.
I just hope next this year Ford will release an Awd hybrid version.
You have done an excellent job of showing why the FX4 package isn't needed. Just a good set of tires and some WOT is all you need for snow.
Miss Maverick ate that hill up in Sand Mode💪🏾
Quite a handsome little truck. Love it
Love these snow vids
The scorpion tires on the FX4 are not known for ice/snow handling and are better daily drivers. I've watched snow/ice videos with some blizzaks or wildpeaks and its alot better handling in ice/snow.
I think i saw Jeep Compass in the background, lets see Jeep here :)
We did the same tests with the 2022 Jeep Compass and Subaru Forester Wilderness. Those videos will be dropping in the next couple weeks.
@@drivingsportsYeahhhhhh! Thank you!
You the Man!!
I’ve been driving my old s10 for a while I want one of these
Oh wow!!!! That’s a shocker
I put 300# of sand bags in the bed in the winter for more traction for our snowy roads
Congrats on getting your order in Greg! My channel has a bunch of Mav only videos that can help you get through your wait.
@@fordmaverickmaniac - actually canceled the Maverick order and replaced it with a Ranger Crew 4x4. Build date January 30!
@GregH Bummer, you may want to uncancel because your dealer did not cancel with Ford. You had first right to purchase at msrp. Now they will probably ADM +20k when it arrives. That would have helped pay for your Ranger.
@@fordmaverickmaniac , I'm good. Dealer will sell the Maverick. Ranger is still at MSRP. This is Long McArthur in KS. "FordVideoGuy" here on RUclips.....
@GregH Got it! Hope you like my vids too.
Great video. Would have liked to see a comparison video with the other 4x4's in your fleet
Check the TFL truck video they did an hill climb test with this and the Santa Cruz. The Maverick did way better. The Hyundai Santa Cruz failed plus they smelled burnt oil from the DSG transmission.
Added to my Christmas list must have,!
