You're welcome. Good question. Yes you are right. When pouring the glaze should be the consistence of heavy cream. But for clear glaze even thinner. I only brush on 2 coats of clear glaze. If applied too thick the glaze looks milky. 😊

Hi. Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting pottery. I have found underglaze does work the best because you have to add soap and water to the glaze. This may affect the glaze when fired in the kiln. I would a test on one small piece and see how it turns out. 😊
Marie: As always, thank you SO much for your videos like this one AND all the wonderful articles on your website! Regarding new videos, how about one with carving clay (and then glazing) ? Now that is interesting. You bubble glazed with Glaze instead of underglaze. I want to try that. A coat of glaze then put soap in the other glaze and make bubbles. The soap burns off the glaze in the kiln? 😊
@@PotteryCrafters yes I use a white or Chun base as the base coat then add the soap to my top contrasting glaze. try a black, blue or green top glaze bubbles

Dear Marie, thanks for your video. Nice to learn from you. Can you tell me how I can prevent transparent glossy glaze from giving a white cast on baked workpieces.
Hi Kaat. That is great to hear. The white cast comes from the glaze being too thick or the glaze recipe it self. I apply 2 thin coats and found this clear glaze to work the best for me. Here is the link for you to check it out. geni.us/eKoT
Thank you ever so much for all your useful tips. I really appreciate your gentle teaching style I was wondering if I can eliminate the wax- on resist step by doing the bubble texture on green ware ( ie before bisque firing ) Will that work ?
Thank you💖 You don't have to put the wax- on on. I only put it on because I wanted to keep the bubble glaze pattern on the bottom. When applying your clear glaze, you can be careful not to get the glaze on the bottom or wipe the bottom. You don't have to keep the bubble pattern on the foot. Or yes you can bubble glaze your bone dry piece. Happy Glazing. 😍

Thank you so much Bob😍 Great question. I have not, yet. But it's funny that you ask because I was just thinking about making my own glaze. I will put your suggestion on my list and let you know if I do. 😊
10yrs. ago...ouch... I tried to do this technique, but the person who instructed me had no real idea who much glaze to water to soap! I ended up with tiny bubbles, instead of the big, luxurious ones you demonstrate here. I tried all kinds of soaps, including Mr. Bubble bubble bath. So what was wrong? My instructor had us blow the bubbles on a tray and then sort of dip the bisque onto them. By the time we got that far the bubbles had popped and in THE WRONG DIRECTION. I gave up. That is wonderful to hear. Making Bubbles this way has worked well for me, hopefully it will work just as well for you. If you have time let me know how it goes.
Hi there! Great video! I wanted to ask about the glaze on the foot of the stoneware. Does wax resist make the glaze not burn to the kiln? Or did it not burn because it was underglaze, and underglaze doesn't stick to the kiln plate? All my best!
Good question. You are right. The underglaze does not stick to the kiln shelf. But the underglaze might stick if applied too thick. I applied the wax resist to keep the pattern on the foot so I could wipe any clear glaze off the foot. Hope this helps.

thank you! do we always have to use underglaze or can we use another form of glaze? what if we want to keep it matte? can we omit the clear glaze on top? thanks again!
Hi Lara. That is a good question. Yes, you can keep it matte. But if you want it to be waterproof or food safe, you would have to apply a glaze on the inside. I have seen potters use glaze to create bubbles, but for the best results, it is best to use underglaze. 😊
Have you ever tried the bubble technique on a stamped piece? What did you think of the finished product. Love this technique new to pottery by one week.
Thank you for this video. I am excited to learn and start doing this awesome process. One question I have: on your cylinder form it appears you had previously used a resist over the surface decoration, before the application of the bubbles. Is this correct?
Good Question Dana. 😊 You sure can. The only thing you can't place on the kiln shelf is glaze because of the silica in it. Also, underglaze that is too thick because of the tiny amount of silica it has in it. But a thinner coat of underglaze is fine. Thank you, Dana, glad you are finding value in the videos 😍
Is there anything we know we can successfully combine the bubble-glazing technique with? Can you put one bubble layer atop another? Does this only work with certain glazes, or how well would it work with a celadon or crystal glaze?
Very good question. I have only done it with underglaze so far. Thank you for the question. I will be test firing with glaze and soap to see how it turns out. Yes you can bubble glaze with several different colors. So far I have only used 2 different colors and it turned out great.
Thank you. That's a very good question. I have never tried it with glaze. I'm not sure how the glaze would react with the soap and being water down. After I bubble glaze with the underglaze I can seal it with clear glaze. 😊
Very good question Jill. I did the trace and transfer technique. here is the link for the technique. ruclips.net/video/HabWZ0TLUP8/видео.html Then I apply wax resist to the area. 😊
Thank you for the suggestion Julie! If you haven't seen it yet you may like this underglaze video here is the link for you. ruclips.net/video/jP5SpwCJEsA/видео.html 😊
Thank you for posting. Your videos are very instructive and your work in beautiful. On the bubble technique...can a glaze of one color be applied uniformly as a solid all over, and then after it has dried...can the bubble technique be applied over the solid color? Or will these bubbles be lost in firing? Thank you
Thank you, Norma. 😊 Good question. I have not done this technic personally, but to the best of my knowledge on what I know about underglazes, the bubbles should not be lost in the firing. Underglaze stays where you put it, acting more like paint. If anything the underglaze colors will brighten up after firing. 😊
Question: You had the pieces face down on newspaper for the glaze coats. After glazing top/inside first, it's necessary to completely dry before flipping over, right? otherwise, I'd imagine you'd mess up the rim, right?
Great Question. 😊 I have saved some for a few days and used it. It was fine but I do not know if it will still be good any longer than that. The soap may interact with the glaze over time. So I would suggest making small amounts. I did take a look at some I had leftover from a few months ago and it doesn't look too good. It's separated and looks like curded milk. I should put some on a test tile and see what happens. 😃
Good video but I have a question. My bubbles congregated at the bottom of my bowl and made a solid color. The color seemed to have dripped down from the bubbles that were on the side of the bowl. How can we prevent that? Is it possible that I used too much water compared w/underglaze? Not enough soap? Or????
Thanks, Holly. Yes, you are probably not using enough soap. Make sure you place the cloth around your container, so it does not drip. Let me know how it turns out 😊
Hi there my question is under glaze means engobe?. It is hard the translation to spanish . Do you put glaze before the bubbles? Thanks a lot your videos are the best 🙏🙏
That is a very good question. Yes, underglaze and englobe both have clay, water, and flux in them. No, you put clear glaze on after you bubble glaze. 😊👍
That is a very good and important question. I recycle my slurry and scrap clay. Nothing goes down the drain. Any glaze or leftover clay is thrown outside. If you can't throw it outside, you can get a trap system. here is the link for you. geni.us/Ju9KG7 👍
That is a really good question. I have not tried it that way. I was taught to use underglaze. You would have to add soap to the glaze and thin out the glaze. Dipping glaze would not be stable enough to use unless you add a flocculant to suspend the particles to form bubbles. I think it is worth experimenting on one of my smaller pieces of bisqueware. 😊
@@PotteryCrafters Well I tried it. Hope to fire it next week. Will be interesting to see. BTW, I love all your videos - as a newbie, I have learned so much from you and always go back to your videos.
Awesome video! How did you not get any bubble glaze on the piece that had colored stencils on? Is it because you had already glazed that part? It’s at 12:01 :)
Hi Marie. Received my bowl which used this bubble technique. Sadly, the translucent glaze came out badly with pinholes and worst of all parts of the glaze had flicked off...I am so disappointed but cannot figure out what went wrong with the glazing process. I was told the glaze may be too thick. Also I might have mixed up the stoneware glaze and earthenware glaze as both were translucent and white when dried...So...:-( 1 question. After the bubbles dried, should I gently wipe the surface of the bisque ware as it may be soapy for the glaze to stick later one? Thank you
Good question. Yes, I think your glaze might have been too thick. Pinholes do happen with thick glaze. I have an article that will help with pinholes. Here's the link for you. potterycrafters.com/what-causes-pinholes-in-pottery-glaze The next time you bubble glaze you don't need to wipe the soap off. Here is a step-by-step article on Bubble glazing that may help. potterycrafters.com/bubble-glazing-tips-tools-and-ideas/ You can even bisque your piece again before applying your clear glaze 😊
@@PotteryCrafters Hi Marie, thank you for the links:-) I can do my part on glazing, but I cannot control the kilns and firing as this is done only by the studio owners due to licensing matters...
Totally understand. I was there at one point also. All you can do is cross your fingers and hope it turns out. It may turn out after you make your few adjustments. 😊
Great question Heidi 😊 Wax resist prevents the glaze from sticking to your pottery. So you can easily wipe any off the waxed area. Here is a link with more detailed information for you. potterycrafters.com/what-is-wax-resist-in-pottery-used-for/

That is wonderful to hear. Making Bubbles this way has worked well for me, hopefully it will work just as well for you. If you have time let me know how it goes.
what fun, cant wait to try this, thank you!
That's great Betty. You're welcome💖 It is a fun technique. 😀

Wunderschön geworden. Ich hatte befürchtet, daß die Blasen zu hell werden. Aber es ist alles okay. Danke!
Gern geschehen, Bärbel. Es macht Spaß und ich liebe die Ergebnisse
I am definitely going to try this. Should have my ancient B88B paragon kilnsitter kiln set up next week!!
Great timing Kat, my next Video will be about the most asked questions new kiln owners have.😍
@@PotteryCrafters awesome!!
thank you! do we always have to use underglaze or can we use another form of glaze? what if we want to keep it matte? can we omit the clear glaze on top? thanks again!
Hi Lara. That is a good question. Yes, you can keep it matte. But if you want it to be waterproof or food safe, you would have to apply a glaze on the inside. I have seen potters use glaze to create bubbles, but for the best results, it is best to use underglaze. 😊
Very nice looking.
Thank you!
Have you ever tried the bubble technique on a stamped piece? What did you think of the finished product. Love this technique new to pottery by one week.
Not yet! That sounds really cool. Welcome to the wonderful world of pottery crafting Sherry 😍
Thank you for this video. I am excited to learn and start doing this awesome process. One question I have: on your cylinder form it appears you had previously used a resist over the surface decoration, before the application of the bubbles. Is this correct?
You're welcome 😊 Good question. Yes I did.
I really liked this it looks so easy
That's awesome! It gives them a unique look that sets them apart from typical piece. 😊
thank you So much!!! W=Excellent demo.
You are so right I want to do this technique now 😁😁😁 looks fun
That is Awesome. 👍It's fun and easy to do and adds a different dimension to your pottery decorating techniques. 😍
Can I dip the bubbled and dry bisque ware in clear glaze instead of painting it on?
Yes you can. It is actually safer to dip because the underglaze has less chance of smuggling. 😊
@ thank you. Love your channel!
You are most welcome. I just noticed I wrote smuggling instead of smudging 😃😀 Thank you.
Do you do anything between bubbles drying and applying clear glaze? Like wipe the pot or anything? Thanks!
Hi Whimsy. That is a good question. No I don't touch it till it dries, because I may smudge it. 😊
How about a video on loading kilns?
Hi Neil. Thanks for the suggestion. I made a bisque loading video but not a glaze loading one.
Can I place a piece with wax resist on the bottom right on the kiln shelf? Will it stick to the shelf? I love your videos. Thank you.
Hi Marie, what type of clay and glaze did you use?
AMACO A-Mix Stoneware Clay, No. 11 Here are the links for you geni.us/hZeg
And Speedball Underglazes geni.us/lQibvS
Is there anything we know we can successfully combine the bubble-glazing technique with? Can you put one bubble layer atop another? Does this only work with certain glazes, or how well would it work with a celadon or crystal glaze?
Very good question. I have only done it with underglaze so far. Thank you for the question. I will be test firing with glaze and soap to see how it turns out. Yes you can bubble glaze with several different colors. So far I have only used 2 different colors and it turned out great.
Hi! Do you only do one layer of the bubble underglaze, or do you drop bubbles a few times?
Hi Katie. Good question. I only layer it once. But you can do it twice if you change colors. You want the bubble pattern to show nicely.
hello question: why do you use under glaze for the bubbles? love your vlogs thank you
Thank you. That's a very good question. I have never tried it with glaze. I'm not sure how the glaze would react with the soap and being water down. After I bubble glaze with the underglaze I can seal it with clear glaze. 😊
thank you for the tips ;) nice video!
Happy to help!😊
Can you do two different colors of bubbles. Like one after the other drys
Very good question. Yes you can. 😊 Have fun creating.
How did you do the utensils on the jar? Are they drawn on or transfers? Tjx
Very good question Jill. I did the trace and transfer technique. here is the link for the technique. ruclips.net/video/HabWZ0TLUP8/видео.html Then I apply wax resist to the area. 😊
Love your videos. Can you dip the clear coat instead of brushing it on?
Thank you Karen. Yes you can dip or even spray the clear glaze on. It is actually easier and you are less likely to smear the bubbles. 😍
I would like to see how to underglaze a sculpture with realistic colors
Thank you for the suggestion Julie! If you haven't seen it yet you may like this underglaze video here is the link for you. ruclips.net/video/jP5SpwCJEsA/видео.html 😊
Great video. Thank a lot
You are welcome Silvana. 😊
Love your technic !!
Thank you! 😃
Why didn’t the utensils get bubble glaze on them? Did I wax resist?
Hi Anne. Yes you are right. I put wax resist on them. 😃
can I use this same technique with regular glaze (not underglaze?).
Good question Carolyn. I do not know how the glaze would react to the soap. I have not seen it done yet 😊 It may be worth trying on a test tile
Question: You had the pieces face down on newspaper for the glaze coats. After glazing top/inside first, it's necessary to completely dry before flipping over, right? otherwise, I'd imagine you'd mess up the rim, right?
Good question Renee. Yes, you are right, always allow the glaze to dry to touch first. The good news is the glaze dries fast. 😍
@@PotteryCrafters thank you for the reply
Can you save any leftover underglaze/bubble solution to use again at a later date?
Let me know how it turns out 😊
@@PotteryCrafters Thank you. I used the cloth - good idea. Will try more soap the next time.
You're welcome Holly. If you have time. Let me know how it turns out.
What can we use for underglaze
Great question. I used speedball. Here is the link for you geni.us/lQibvS
Awesomeness!!!!!
Thanks!!
Can you also do this using engobe instead of underglaze? Is there enough colorant in engobe?
That's a great question. I haven't tried it yet but I think it would work because underglaze is basically the same thing, 😊
I’d love to know how to do a glaze technique where your pour three or four different glazes into a flat dish and swirl to create a galaxy effect.
Great suggestion! Thank you Samantha 😊
What are you doing to keep everything clean without getting your drain clogged with all the rest clay and glaze in the water?
That is a very good and important question. I recycle my slurry and scrap clay. Nothing goes down the drain. Any glaze or leftover clay is thrown outside. If you can't throw it outside, you can get a trap system. here is the link for you. geni.us/Ju9KG7 👍
@@PotteryCrafters Wow! That's really cool and helpful! Thank you! :)
You're most welcome. Glad to help. 😊
Can I just do the bubbles with my final coat of glaze and not use underglaze and then a clear coat?
That is a really good question. I have not tried it that way. I was taught to use underglaze. You would have to add soap to the glaze and thin out the glaze. Dipping glaze would not be stable enough to use unless you add a flocculant to suspend the particles to form bubbles. I think it is worth experimenting on one of my smaller pieces of bisqueware. 😊
@@PotteryCrafters Well I tried it. Hope to fire it next week. Will be interesting to see. BTW, I love all your videos - as a newbie, I have learned so much from you and always go back to your videos.
Thank you. I haven't tried it yet please let me know how yours turns out. 😊
@@PotteryCrafters When the glaze says cone 5 or cone 6, which is the best choice?
For bubble glazing I would go with Cone 5 and put a 10 minute hold on if you can.
Awesome video! How did you not get any bubble glaze on the piece that had colored stencils on? Is it because you had already glazed that part? It’s at 12:01 :)
Thank you Ronni.Good question 😊I applied wax resist to that area.
@@PotteryCrafters Many thanks for your kind words:-)
What is wax resist? What does it do?
Great question Heidi 😊 Wax resist prevents the glaze from sticking to your pottery. So you can easily wipe any off the waxed area. Here is a link with more detailed information for you. potterycrafters.com/what-is-wax-resist-in-pottery-used-for/
How do l make smaller bubbles?
Hi Laura, That is a really good question. I don't know. Maybe a smaller straw. If you find out, please share. 😀
How do i enhance pottery by cutting openings or patterns
You can use different size clay cutters. I have examples in the recommended section potterycrafters.com/recommended-tools-hand-tools/ hope this helps 😊

what happens if you use high fire glaze
That is a very good question. Yes you can use High fire glaze. I use high fire clear on my underglazes and fire to cone 5. 😊
