- Welcome to Day 27 of Somatic Kickstart, my transformative 30-day series designed to enhance nervous system regulation and improve your overall well-being. In today's guided somatic routine, we are focusing on stopping emotional numbness.
WHAT IS EMOTIONAL NUMBNESS?
Emotional numbness is a state in which we feel disconnected from our emotions, as if there is an invisible wall separating us from our feelings. Many people experience emotional numbness after periods of trauma, prolonged stress, or emotional overload. It can feel isolating, leaving us with a sense of being "stuck" or unable to connect with our own emotions.
Emotional numbness is not a sign of being broken. It is a natural defense mechanism of the body-an automatic response of the nervous system to intense stress, overwhelm, or trauma. When our emotions become too much to process, the nervous system may enter a "freeze" response, causing us to feel emotionally distant or numb. This can lead to a lack of emotional flow, where we may struggle to feel joy, sadness, anger, or even empathy.
THE SCIENCE
To fully understand emotional numbness, we must first look at the autonomic nervous system (ANS)-the part of the nervous system responsible for regulating vital functions such as heart rate, digestion, and emotional responses. The ANS is divided into two primary branches: the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which activates the "fight-or-flight" response, and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which supports "rest-and-digest" functions.
When we experience prolonged stress, anxiety, or trauma, the SNS becomes overactive, putting the body into a heightened state of alert. The body can only handle so much of this stress before the freeze response sets in. This freeze response essentially “shuts down” emotional processing, leaving us feeling numb and disconnected.
THE BENEFITS OF SOMATICS FOR EMOTIONAL NUMBNESS
-Reconnect with your body: When emotional numbness takes hold, it’s easy to become detached from your body. Somatic techniques help ground you back in your physical sensations, fostering a sense of presence and connection to yourself.
-Release stored tension: The body often stores tension from unresolved emotions and trauma. Techniques like tapping, shaking, and breathing work to release this stored tension, which can pave the way for emotional release.
-Activate the parasympathetic nervous system: Focusing on deep breathing and gentle movement helps to activate the body’s rest-and-digest response, reducing stress and promoting healing. This allows the body to move out of the fight-or-flight mode and return to a state of calm and balance.
-Process and release suppressed emotions: As the nervous system begins to regulate, suppressed emotions such as grief, anger, or joy may arise. These emotions are not "bad"-they are simply signals from the body that need to be expressed and processed.
-Restore emotional flow: The ultimate goal of these practices is to help restore emotional flow in your life. Emotional numbness is often a barrier that keeps us from experiencing the full range of human emotions. By engaging in somatic practices, we allow emotions to flow freely once again.

Almost every morning when I wake up I feel anxiety kicking in and I am hyperventilating a lot during the day. It is so stressing. Your excercises help me to calm down a bit. @@sheBREATH_Teresa been doing yoga for about 10 years. eft tapping for some years and been to a psychsomatic therapist for a couple of months Who advised me to take more rest during the Day. I get stressed really easy, even over unimportant things. Fortunately, there are days on which I feel good or when de stress and anxiety releases, but most of the time it is there, weighing on my chest and schoulders. Found you at the bezinning of this challenge and am happy I did!
10 years of yoga, couple of years of eft tapping and psychsomatic therapist advsed taking rest 3 times a Day. Still the anxiety, restlessness and emotional crying keepster bothering me on almost a daily basis. Doing your challenge helps me a bit by feeling a temporary release of stress.
