"Can get expensive" Super Mario Party only requires you to get a second set of Joy-Cons, which is 80 dollars. Every previous version of Mario Party would've required you to buy 3 full controllers or in the case of handhelds, three consoles. I would actually argue that Super Mario Party on Switch offers the least amount of resistance and money to get a full team of 4 together for a game. As for charging, either regularly swap the Joy-Con set connected to your Switch console, or just buy a Charging Grip. I really don't see how this is a bigger hassle than any previous Mario Party. Additional info: From a quick Google search I found out that the Wii remote cost 40 dollars at launch. So 40 x 3 + batteries for all 4 controllers, that's 120+ dollars. A second set of Joy-Cons and a Charging Grip would be 105 dollars.

Weirdly though, Mario Party 9 got a 7 and that was where the car mechanic that everybody hates debuted. I've learned in recent years to take IGN reviews with a grain of salt. This also bears mentioning. - About the controllers: your complaint that they need charging, and that every player needs one, is bizarre because every controller on every console needs charging, and almost every player on every console multiplayer game needs a controller. Yet those games don’t receive flak for these requirements. Furthermore, every Joy Con comes with a wrist strap, and the Switch, unlike other consoles, comes with 2 controllers. So... getting people on a couch to play, which you claim can be difficult, is actually made easier by the design of the Switch. Because of this, it’s actually cheaper to play Super Mario Party with more people on the Switch than it would be traditionally. All in all, none of your complaints are justified, and, I’m sad to say, I’m continuing to lose my faith in IGN as a result. This was a very unsophisticated review.
He complained about the bonus stars at the end of each game? And said they were randomized lol. No they're not. If you played any Mario Party game ever it's almost always the same bonus stars, who collects the most coins, wins the most mini games, lands on the most event spaces, etc.
I can say, if there is anyone who only knows the ND Cube Mario Parties and doesn't know what Mario Party 1 to 8 and DS are like, I highly recommend trying those Mario Parties. It's definitely different from what ND Cube has given us so far. The Mario Party games made by Hudson Soft are still much better than anything ND Cube has made.
So you need to buy more controllers to play with more people? YOU DON'T SAY. Just like, y'know, every other multi-player game on a console ever... Duh. And the switch even gives you 2 controllers from the get go (and 2 more with every new pair), so it's even better than most at that. And the batteries last 20hrs, so I hardly think battery life is going to be an issue. You know they have so little 'bad' things to say about the game when they need to resort to stating the obvious...
Really? In my opinion, this is the worst one I've played. There's absolutely no reason you should be forced to play with only one joy-con, the menu systems are incredibly weird and needlessly complicated, the new character exclusive dice blocks means that characters are no longer only a cosmetic preference and can actually give you some kind of advantage, Bowser is now a character which means Bowser spaces are completely gone, and the many games which are normally the best part for a lot of people including myself have next to nothing to do with Mario. They could be many games inside of any generic party game. There are really only a few that actually seemed to use things exclusively from the Mario universe. Which makes Mini games kind of bland.
Kaiheps most MP games only had five or six boards and I would be willing to bet that Nintendo will be supporting this one with free DLC like they have with MK and Splatoon.
My take: Pro - best looking MP game in ages. HEAPS of mini games and several of quality. Con - Boards look really simple. Granted my last reference was MP2 on N64 but still. Can't play the board games online with strangers. Most likely will happen - Nintendo has an awesome habit of giving lots of free DLC to their games. I expect this game to get even better with each month it's out :) Verdict - Oh I'm 100% getting this. Looks real fun and the joy-con means I'm already set up for 2 players without having to buy another controller
no Alex, that is only Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo actually loves their users and are very generous. there might be a couple maps and other content that needs to be purchased, but the most likely scenario is that many will free with other updates.
Mario party is a game that your enjoyment level comes from who you play it with. From this review, it sounded like you played with bots or if you played with people, you rushed it to get the review out right away. I highly encourage anyone reading this to watch Peanutbuttergamers video, it will show you what I mean. they had an absolute blast with it and was a joy to watch. If you have friends to play it with and not lose your friendship over, It’s an absolute must buy on switch.Again watch PBgamers video.Ill put it here ruclips.net/video/fSGiRqmAg-g/видео.html
You need multiple Controllers for multiple people that only last for one week. That's like 1min in the life of a gamer! I would have given MP a 3.2 for that!
There's dice games that are nothing but luck, how would review them? Because people loooove to play them and bet money on them. Would you give 7/11/doubles a 3.9 because it's nothing but luck (and fun)? So what if much of it is luck based? It has to be if it's a dice rolling game.
thank you, someone had to point out this because IGN clearly doesn't understand an easy concept like randomness can be fun and normal in a boardame lol.
Controllers shouldn't be an issue. Yes, you have to buy another pair of joy-con if you haven't already, but the wrist straps come with every joy-con and the battery life is of 40 hours. Just charge them and that's it!
I know I havent played Super Mario Party but you cant just give it a 7.3, really IGN lots of people that been playing the game that talks about it before it comes out says its a great game and a lot of fun I would give it a 9.5once I get it
I think it would of gotten that score if we were able to play the core party mode online that's what I was hoping for (no friends, no one I live with likes Nintendo like I do)
I’d give it an 8. Lack of boards and animations that drag on bring it down but the minigames are great and there’s a lot of modes and the boards that we have are still pretty decent
He lost all credibility as a game reviewer when he said “ The random stars given at the end” Im sure you havent played mario party games long enough to understand that they are not just random stars, each bonus star is given for a reason...
I would rank it as an 8.3. The random bonus star aren't but they need to be consistent so we can work towards them. I think we need at least one more board
He thinks they are random when its clearly meant to balance out who did the most in the game. Example the person who collected the most coins deserves a star
@@dynasty971 I mean you can increase your chances with items, and other stars like the coin star or the minigame stars aren't just random luck.... unless you get a random luck minigame.
7.3??? I doubt it. I've played it with family and we had a blast. The minigames are super fun and the maps are great. We had doubts at first but we don't regret buying it. Definitely recommend.
I'm disappointed with it. No online that's worth a damn. Its the most barebones one ever, it feels like this could've been the first beta or alpha to the first one... Only 3 items in the item shop on the board plus maybe 2 or so from the other vendor. BACK THEN THERE WERE SEVERAL ITEMS. It feels as if they made a mobile version like phone version of the game, it's so lackluster man.
I just hate the sound effects, such as the clapping, kids going yay, and announcer saying "ready....yeah." It makes the game feel like an interactive child's show. The one thing I've always loved about Mario games is how cheery it looks and yet how dark and mysterious the lore behind it is. Other than that, it's alright.
I would love the game more if it had that Wii remote feeling like Mario Party 8 by having the players hold the joy-cons vertically in party mode rather than the hand-clustered horizontal way.
I think Nintendo are just lazy. I've ready Plenty of ways Nintendo could Utilized it's ONLINE by making Mario Party have Online Board games/mini games with your Friends/Strangers....... They have so many Nintendo games that do a TON more crazy stuff online compared to anything a Mario Party game would do...I don't know why Nintendo isn't doing this!
@Steff ZZz nah you just dont like nintendo when most people love nintendo my proof... Smash bros, zelda ( won game of the year btw ), the sales mario odyssy got, pokemon, splatoon, and more lol
I may not be a huge fan of this game but the switch had had some of the greatest games of all time, and Nintendo as a whole has had so many great exclusives as well.
This game is definitely not amazing. This game just goes along with the over half baked games this year, kirby, tennis, those have been left in the dust, wasted potential, let's hope they dont do it for this game
Something you guys messed up on is saying how it is annoying that you need all the players who are playing to have their controller with charge in it which would make annoying having to re-charge. But from my experience 1-2 bars of battery lasts the whole 10 or 15 turn matches. So I do not see this to be a problem at all. Just gotta have them charged for at least 5-10mins.
I don't agree with the gripe about the joycons. Right off the bat you have 2 joycons = 2 players. If your friends come over and they have joycons then it's safe to assume theirs are charged. If you have a spare set, charge them while using the other set. A charge lasts about 20 hours; how can all of your joycons be dead?
Why would the joy cons not being charged be a problem, they last 20 hours and if you wanted you could buy the extra battery packs if you really don’t think your joy cons will last. Plus all the joy cons come with the straps so why would that be a problem too
You call it dumb luck on the bonus stars but that's not true. The bonus stars keep the game balanced by encouraging you to go for event spaces or win minigames.
I am afraid to play this game because I don't want to ruin my controllers. Went through N64 controllers like crazy when I was a kid because of Mario Party.
Hi, I love mario party games, but the maps... they look really simple, like n64 mario party ,which I love too, but I started to like more complex scenarios and not so square. What do you think? Im missing something?

Yet those games don’t receive flak for these requirements. Furthermore, every Joy Con comes with a wrist strap, and the Switch, unlike other consoles, comes with 2 controllers. So... getting people on a couch to play, which you claim can be difficult, is actually made easier by the design of the Switch. Because of this, it’s actually cheaper to play Super Mario Party with more people on the Switch than it would be traditionally.
All in all, none of your complaints are justified, and, I’m sad to say, I’m continuing to lose my faith in IGN as a result. This was a very unsophisticated review.
0:35 I guess they never miss, huh
He complained about the bonus stars at the end of each game? And said they were randomized lol. No they're not. If you played any Mario Party game ever it's almost always the same bonus stars, who collects the most coins, wins the most mini games, lands on the most event spaces, etc.
"You need controllers to play!"
"This luck based board game is luck based!"
Incredible. I expect nothing less from ign
Only 4 boards? Smh
It's probably going to be like Splatoon2
lets hope it gets new stuff through updates like splatoon
I was hoping for more, oh well.
Kaiheps most MP games only had five or six boards and I would be willing to bet that Nintendo will be supporting this one with free DLC like they have with MK and Splatoon.
The thing is Splatoon was incomplete at launch and that's why it had free dlc; Mario party is almost 20 years old and lacks
My take:
Pro - best looking MP game in ages. HEAPS of mini games and several of quality.
Con - Boards look really simple. Granted my last reference was MP2 on N64 but still. Can't play the board games online with strangers.
Most likely will happen - Nintendo has an awesome habit of giving lots of free DLC to their games. I expect this game to get even better with each month it's out :)
Verdict - Oh I'm 100% getting this. Looks real fun and the joy-con means I'm already set up for 2 players without having to buy another controller
A whopping 4 boards?
Tiger Gaming How did Nintendo get the file size down to 2.7GB? They’re compression wizards or something.
they are wizards man
Don't worry man, $30 DLC and each new board (2 in counting) will be $30 each
no Alex, that is only Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo actually loves their users and are very generous. there might be a couple maps and other content that needs to be purchased, but the most likely scenario is that many will free with other updates.
The bonus stars are the game changers if everyone is tied up
Mario party is a game that your enjoyment level comes from who you play it with. From this review, it sounded like you played with bots or if you played with people, you rushed it to get the review out right away. I highly encourage anyone reading this to watch Peanutbuttergamers video, it will show you what I mean. they had an absolute blast with it and was a joy to watch. And for anyone on the fence with this game.
Bonus stars are literally the best part
Those random and bonus stars are part of the fun. The chaos adds to the excitement
You lost me when you said bonus stars were a problem.
Not balanced for E-Sports 7/10 -IGN
I know I havent played Super Mario Party but you cant just give it a 7.3, really IGN lots of people that been playing the game that talks about it before it comes out says its a great game and a lot of fun I would give it a 9.5once I get it
I think it would of gotten that score if we were able to play the core party mode online that's what I was hoping for (no friends, no one I live with likes Nintendo like I do)
@@soulodolo6721 sorry about that if it would of been an online game I would of added you on nintendo switch and played this game with you
I’d give it an 8.
Where is bowsette !?? I didn't see bowsette !!!
Who cares, bravh.
Bowsette is the reason i clicked but i didint see her😞
In the fires of hell.
stop this.
Stop
I would rank it as an 8.3. The random bonus star aren't but they need to be consistent so we can work towards them. I think we need at least one more board
Where is browser that was my favorite thing about Mario party. Bowser coming and giving punishments or calling Bowser on someone lol.
I didn’t feel like 80 mini games was that much but I realize now that I haven’t yet played any of the games you mentioned.
I wish they would bring back the cute costumes from Mario Party 2
I feel like this is a must have for any switch owner who will ever have a friend over. It’s so easy to kill an hour or two with it
7.3/10
Too much party, not enough Bowsette
"It's just dumb luck who wins the bonus stars " damn bud you sounded pissed off there. Did you lose alot of games from the bonus stars ? XD
aw i saw bayonetta playing around 2:49! i miss her..
@Aiden :v is there going to be a bayonetta 3?
A lot of charging time? Don’t the joycons last for 30 hours or so?
Bonus stars are cool tho how’s it a problem? 😂😂
He thinks they are random when its clearly meant to balance out who did the most in the game. Example the person who collected the most coins deserves a star
The funny part is when people think that the game is all about strategy when at the core mario party is a dice game.
yeah but there's stars for who landed on the most question mark spaces, which is complete dumb luck
@@dynasty971 I mean you can increase your chances with items, and other stars like the coin star or the minigame stars aren't just random luck.... unless you get a random luck minigame.
A board game is based on 2 things Luck and Strategy you cant win with just 1. The roll of the dice determines your fate.
7.3??? I doubt it. I've played it with family and we had a blast. The minigames are super fun and the maps are great. We had doubts at first but we don't regret buying it. Definitely recommend.
Sonic Shuffle FTW!!!
Please tell me you’re joking
you 12 bruh?
blake3one6
Nope. 15
Juggular John makes sense
Character-specific dice blocks actually appeared first in Mario Party: Star Rush, since it was the first game to include allies.
Trying playing Star Rush. That was barebones.
The older games had more intense minigames
I play this game a lot when friends are over and on family game nights and I love it!! 😀
Same my dad and I love it
I just hate the sound effects, such as the clapping, kids going yay, and announcer saying "ready....yeah." It makes the game feel like an interactive child's show. The one thing I've always loved about Mario games is how cheery it looks and yet how dark and mysterious the lore behind it is. Other than that, it's alright.
Mario Party got better rating than Venom? 😂 Life is crazy
Mario party is the best kill your friends game to exist
I would love the game more if it had that Wii remote feeling like Mario Party 8 by having the players hold the joy-cons vertically in party mode rather than the hand-clustered horizontal way.
The fact it doesn't have the board game online is an easy pass for me. Why Nintendo?
Klark Griswold They’re old people
I think Nintendo are just lazy. I've ready Plenty of ways Nintendo could Utilized it's ONLINE by making Mario Party have Online Board games/mini games with your Friends/Strangers.......
They have so many Nintendo games that do a TON more crazy stuff online compared to anything a Mario Party game would do...I don't know why Nintendo isn't doing this!
it really makes you wonder the purpose of the online service
Should have been a big celebration like Smash Ultimate. With like 300 minigames, a lot being returning bests of previous titles, and 10 maps at least.
7.3 no more cars
Only 4 maps? It’s 2019 now guys, you can do at least 8 maps
Assassin's creed 9.2 but Mario party 7 wow
Did you really complain about the randomness of Bonus Stars? It's an optional feature.
7.3 too much fun
A bunch of reviews were up before this...could say you were late to the party IGN! Lawllllll!
so its an amazing game LIKE AMAZING lol.... but they hate it cause you got to buy more controllers ... and they give it a 7 .... ign logic lol
Steff ZZz Oh yes, and that’s also why BOTW won game of the year.
Steff ZZz
Listen kid, I know you’re pissed because mommy didn’t give you a Switch.
Hate the joy con requirement.... it’s killing my wallet...I have 3 other controller already... just not joy cons...
Xiao 2 came with the system, you just need 2 more. Buy the special bundle with the game and two joy-cons and you’re set!
Since when is the bonus stars random? Has the reviewer even played the older mario parties?
O-10 it’s not melee
I don't agree with the gripe about the joycons. Right off the bat you have 2 joycons = 2 players. If your friends come over and they have joycons then it's safe to assume theirs are charged. If you have a spare set, charge them while using the other set. A charge lasts about 20 hours; how can all of your joycons be dead?
Spoki boi
Why would the joy cons not being charged be a problem, they last 20 hours and if you wanted you could buy the extra battery packs if you really don’t think your joy cons will last. Plus all the joy cons come with the straps so why would that be a problem too
We just want Nintendo royale. Let's be honest
Lucas Arnold it’s called super smash bros.
Didn't expect Sam to review this.
OVERCOOKED CLONE? homie that's straight outta one of the old ones
Hi, I love mario party games, but the maps... they look really simple, like n64 mario party ,which I love too, but I started to like more complex scenarios and not so square. What do you think? Im missing something?
From what I've read, you are NOT the only person who feels the way you do.
