Hello guys! Thank you so much for using my lyrics video, I'm very glad more and more people discover Viktor Tsoi and Kino's songs! They are barely known outside of the post-soviet countries and the eastern block, but make no mistake they carry some very heavy and contemplating meaning behind their songs, so let me tell you a little bit about Calm Night.
Translating specific languages can sometimes be hard or difficult due to differnet word usage and wording, and the Russian-English combo is one of them. Спокойная can also be translated to peacful, but in this context calm is more fitting.
Originally this song first appeared on their 4th album titled Ночь or Night which released in 1986, then in their most known 1988 album Gruppa Krovi, or Blood Type and the version you listened to is the 3rd and last version that was in their only compilation album that got released abroad in France in 1989.
The song, like any other song and literary work has a denotative and a connotative meaning. When taken literally, the song is describing an eerily peacful and quiet night, where some people gather to head out somewhere, while others are disturbed in their sleeps. Very aesthetic, but it's missing half of it's value, the meaning behind the lyrics. When viewing it in the connotative meaning, it can have different interpretations, but most people agree on two.
The first one is connected to the then present Soviet Union and it's perestroika period. The calm night is supposed to be everyday life itself, existing as a constant thing. The people who are entioned gathering in the song are the people who want more change in the system. They first gather, those who share similiar ideas, ideals and thinking, and then take off, meaning taking action to change things. The line "Those who were silent aren't silent anymore" stresses this perfectly. The people who are sleeping on the other hand are those who are afraid to speak up. They aren't happy either with how things are run, but have a perfectly adequate life and don't want to risk changes, because that could disturb their "sleep" or their present life.
The other interpretation dwells into Tsoi's personal life, and the song resonates with the listener on a personal level. Here we don't talk about systems or ideologies, but how people are generally afraid to make changes in their lives, let it be a personal problem, relationships, grief, or a life changing event. In this sense the song describes how people need to force themselves out of their comfort zones and has to sacrifice some to make a change, unlike people who decide to "sleep" instead, meaning that those people are not strong enough, too lazy, or just cannot make a change.
Generally people tend to avoid songs like these just for their melancholy sound, but I tend to look at Kino's and Viktor Tsoi's songs like an oyster. You have to break the hard shell in order to see the pearl inside. I'm currently studying anglo-saxon history, culture and language in general in universtiy, and translating and analyzing foreign songs is a huge passion of mine.

In fact, this is a social song about active and passive people. The song is full of allegories. Passive people go with the flow and do not take part in the urgent need for change. They accept the routine that at night everyone usually sleeps and goes to bed. They are wished a restful sleep. The city is the country. The flashes of fireworks in the night sky are bright people striving to illuminate the night, but the night (the existing order) is stronger, the power of the night is great. Those who do not agree sit in the saddle of their horse, and the rest (passive people) are wished a peaceful sleep.

Every reaction video I see of this song they think it is a new song. No, it is a old song, and has variations depending on the album you are listening to. I think the first variation was on the 1985 album Ночь. The new videos you are seeing are tribute Concerts. RIP Viktor.
Не стоит понимать песни Цоя буквально, в каждой строке скрытый смысл! Виктор пел вроде простые песни, но со смыслом! Думающий человек догадается!

Надо быть сильно погруженным в культуру "русского мира" и знания восточных философий, чтобы понимать творчество Цоя в полной мере.

К сожалению, песню они не поняли. Ничего безмятежного и успокаивающего в ней нет. Наоборот, она разделяет людей на тех, кто собирается спать, им и желается оставаться в дремоте, и тех, кто собирается в путь, и кого уже не догнать спящим. И это не успокоение, и не примерение, а констатация факта и принятие для себя одной из сторон. И не в том даже дело, кто прав, а в том, что они становятся по разные строны в этой жизни. Где уж тут calm and soothing?!
Да, у Цоя все песни, не просто песни, а с очень глубоким смыслом. Но для некоторых людей смысл данных строк спрятан, замаскирован и поэтому они понимают всё буквально. Может не стоит их за это судить, возможно, чтобы понять песни Цоя, нужно было жить в России.
@@galinasorokina7914я и не осуждаю, так, констатирую в наблюдении. Они, кстати, не первые иностранцы, которые не улавливают напряжение не только в Цоевских песнях. Всё-таки, привычка к ярким акцентам и гипертрофорованно подчёркнутым проявлениям эмоций в кино и на сцене на многих, не на всех(!), но на многих сказывается. В этом плане европейцы и восточные, турки, например, более чутки к тонким нюансам. Но везде всякие есть.

Очень многие почитатели Виктора и группы Кино считают, что они пели песни с политическим подтекстом, с нарративом сопротивления и вызова! Хотя сам Виктор при жизни это отрицал. Скорее он писал песни с социальным подтекстом, о выборе жизненной позиции людей - "камнем лежать или гореть звездой?". Иностранцам не дано осмыслить русский менталитет...
@@ultrax2002 согласен. Но есть нюанс - в то время любой выбор собственного пути, попытка осмыслить жизнь вокруг и себя в этой жизни нЕ с позиций оф. идеологии начинало иметь политический подтекст. Это то, что во многом(не единственное обстоятельство, мир очень сложно устроен, но одно из) убило то наше государство. Непонимание того, что не соглашающийся с твоими правилами ещё не твой враг, а повторяющий твои лозунги ещё не твой союзник, но имеет возможность подобраться ближе, чтобы воткнуть нож поглубже. Зашоренность и желание всё и всех держать в узде и под контролем при неспособности действительно зажечь большинство людей некоей идеей плохо кончилось. Тем более при наличии внешних сил, желавших нашего падения. Но всё это не для интернет-сайта. Единственное, в чём возражу, что понять наши обстоятельства и мотивы они могут, но для этого надо изучать исторические факты и разговаривать с нашими людьми. А это долго, трудно и мало кому нужно, даже если и интересно.
Самое печальное, что мы сами зачастую не понимаем своих обстоятельств. А иностранцы - дело второстепенное. Но интересуются, вот, музыкой :)
