well said. THIS exactly! they do everything! you want hiphop, they have hiphop. you want pop, they have pop. your want rock, they have rock. you want edm, they have edm. you want a ballad, they have a ballad. they are THAT diverse. also, it is true that they dont have a focal point, or a special few memebrs. they do have a leader, but his role as a leader is mainly to represent the team in speeches etc and also translating for them, thats all. apart from that, ALL MEMEBERS contribute their own unique thing to the team, and no one is more/less important or special to the other. it is the talents of ALL 7 and that they EACH bring to the team that makes them so uniquely bts.

There's a leader and it's RM. A leader in the kpop scene is not the same with the so called leader that you might have perceived originally. Just because he's the leader doesn't mean that he's the most favored by the fans and their label. The leader in kpop groups bears responsibility not in the same way as it does in the states. The responsibilities of a leader varies per group but most of the time they're the spokesperson between the company and the group.
If you watch some bts clips, you would see how much they respect RM as their leader.

    I'll be honest -
I liked your first videos on JK. I would just appreciate a little more respect for the language barrier between korean and english, and also knowing that english is none of there first languages and thinking you hear something you didnt hear will happen alot. So just follow the subtitles because on official videos the subtitles are correct. Also try to avoid making fun of the way they pronounce some things in English, such as RM rapping "Good man" It just gives respect to them.
Also J hope was saying Naega which is korean for "I or Me" not the N word...
This comment isnt meant to be mean, just an insight to how some of things you are saying comes off to your viewers.

Well, most of these boys were young when they first started out, and I never heard them be called a man band and they weren’t technically a band, they didn’t play instruments. Although, most of them have learned instruments, they’re too busy dancing to play. I don’t know of another name created for them other than “group”. Maybe we should revert back to that term. It’s just laziness on our part not to be more conscious of defining them right. Even the Beatles and Boys to Men (and countless others) were called boy bands for a long time. Vocal group, would that cover the label we give them, as rappers and singers? BTS is so versatile, we can’t label their genre either. Gosh, I love this group, they’re truly like a box of chocolates, aren’t they? You never know what you’re gonna get; thank you, Forrest Gump! Anybody have any suggestions how we define BTS? “Artists” gets my vote. That covers everything…lol!

    • @overthemoo
      @overthemoo 2 месяца назад

Considering what boy bands were known for -primarily [but not exclusively] singing and dancing- BTS and any kpop group composed of boys/men are undeniably boy bands. 🤷‍♀️
I went through high school being teased about liking boy bands (NSYNC, etc.) - not only did I not give a shit then but I continue to not give a shit that ‘boy band’ has a negative connotation. Denying the label of ‘boy band’ simply because others would perceive my musical interests and/or favorite group as “lame” would be pretty spineless of me. You like what you like - own it and pay no mind to others’ judgment.
Also, BTS is most definitely K-Pop. Denial of this is strange, imo.

RM, the leader of the group, speaks fluent English so by using Korean and English mixed together they can make anything rhyme. They do have a few all-English songs (Dynamite, Permission to Dance, Butter). You will learn they do all types of genres so don't try and put them into just one. there IS a leader but bts leader doesnt work like a western boyband leader. hes not the "main important" guy hes like the captain of a sports team. bts can and should be seen as a TEAM rather than a boyband. they all put equal efforts in. also yes majority of their music is in korean and japanese. you get used to it after hearing it and opening your mind to it. think how majority of the world listens to american music but dont understand english. theres so much more music than just english music.

Pop music is a huge umbrella term. K-Pop (yes, the name of their industry) incorporates a lot of sub-genres, which is one of the reasons why it’s so popular- the complexity. Fake Love is a fusion of electro-pop (the foundation of a lot of K-Pop, along with R&B), emo hip hop (trap beat, 3 rappers), and grunge rock.
The 3 rappers (rap line) have pure rap songs. They write all their bars and are the members most involved in production to varying degrees, though the vocalists have contributed too.

The majority of their music is Korean with various degrees of English mixed in (keep in mind they have over 300 songs) and occasionally they do songs in Japanese too. RM is the only member of BTS that is fluent in English. BTS only have 3 songs that are fully English as a full group (Dynamite, Butter, and Permission To Dance). But they are extremely poppy and commercial (those songs remind me more of One Direction than Fake Love). Trust me you haven't seen them really go hard with their rapping yet (check out the cyphers 1-4 for that. And no not all their solo song/albums are fully English. There is a leader in BTS, it's RM (one of the rappers) but it's not how most people in west view a leader. Leader for kpop groups is more like a captain of a sports team. The thing is Jungkook is the main vocalist and he is usually center in a lot of their dance formations but he's not the leader. He probably gets the most lines in songs but they all have their turn to sing/rap in their songs that have all 7 members. And I'm sure you are aware but they aren't saying the n word, the words niga and naega mean you and I in Korean. The founder of Bighit Entertainment Bang Si-Hyuk put BTS together but there is a whole training system they had to do over a 2-3 year period with many other trainees like 20 to 30 other guys before the group was narrowed down to 7. Yes they write and produce their music but they also have help from in house writers and producers too and occasionally outside writers and producers, but they are very much involved in their music. BTS officially debuted as a group back in 2013- their ages at the time ranged from 15-20 and no none of the members knew each other before joining Bighit Entertainment. Their current ages are Jin- 30, Suga- 30, J-Hope- 29, RM-28, Jimin- 27, V- 27, and Jungkook- 25. The taylor guide is just really informative and it's good introduction to learn more about BTS and who they are as individuals. The thing is pop music actually encompasses different styles of music. Like a lot of artists make pop music but their songs aren't bubblegum pop sounding.

They have position obv BTS has a leader, main vocal, main rapper, main dancer, etc. What the armys meant was that despite their positions none of the members were "left out", the 7 of them shined with their own specialties. answering in comments would be too long, Guide vid will answer all your questions. i commented this under another comment but i dont think this might be seen so im putting it here too haha
they do a very wide range of music genres! you want hiphop, they have hiphop. you want pop, they have pop. you want rock, they have rock. you want edm, they have edm. you want a ballad, they have ballads. they are THAT diverse. also, it is true that they dont have a focal point, or a special few members. they do have a leader, but his role as a leader is mainly to represent the team in speeches etc and also translating for them, thats all. apart from that, ALL MEMBERS contribute their own unique thing to the team, and no one is more/less important or special than the other. it is the talents of ALL 7 and that they EACH bring to the team that makes them so uniquely bts.
also, another thing that i think yall had a misconception on from another video is that i think yall said kpop is a genre. kpop is NOT a genre. i guess you could call it an industry? kpop is just simply korean artists making music, and there are SO MANY genres of music in kpop :) and like other people said, please do react to the guide to bts by taylor! its gonna answer so many of your questions. we know its a long video, but dont worry! as long as youre interested in finding out more about our boys, we will be here watching! please dont be afraid to pause the guide when youre watching it to give your own opinions or ask any questions that you have too :)

There are bits of English in every single Korean song I’ve ever heard. English is incorporated because it sounds good, it can rhyme with certain words and because English words are used in everyday communications in Korea. Also read the lyrics and yes there’s a leader and every member has a role, we don’t like when they get compared to one another and solo stans

American interviews and radio have fed to the world that BTS is a “pop boyband” but they are far from that.
They have attempted and succeeded many different genres and the reason why they’re the biggest group in the world is because rap plays such a large part in their music as well as who they are.
I extremely recommend ‘A guide to bts the bangtan 7’ by Taylor

I appreciate the open-mindedness and being willing to listen to a style that's really new to you. I started listening to BTS in 2020 after a lifetime of listening to mostly pop and hip-hop. And digging into BTS's catalog was full of surprises for me. I thought the language would initially be a barrier for me, but there's enough English and enough emotion in the singing + the music for me to get the gist of a song, and translated lyrics are readily available. Doolset is a go-to for good translations that include cultural and contextual notes. If you like music that has diverse sounds and styles and deep, relatable lyrics, you'd probably enjoy exploring more of their catalog. It DOES take time and effort to learn their names, understand the genre, and understand the cultural differences, but BTS makes music for everyone anywhere.
Taylor's guide is a good intro to each of the members and what he brings to the group. If you want a sampler of songs to hear in one video, there's a video called BTS Room Live from 2021 that has a medley of B-side tracks they sing live. Of course, ARMY has hundreds of suggestions for you, so just keep letting us know what you're interested in or what questions you have!
We can be wary of new reactors, because lots of people pop up with new releases, and we welcome people getting to know them. I'm sure others have already said it, but they're not saying the "n" word in English and there are skilled and respected rappers in this group, who write their own bars and also write lyrics and melodies for others. All the members at this point have taken part in the songwriting. Most of them producing as well. The rappers have had their own studios at the company for years. They collab with a lot of people in Korea and increasingly with Western artists. They also have producers and performance directors at their label who have been working with them since their trainee days in 2010.
Thank you again for taking the time to watch, even if this song was not as easily familiar in sound and style as Seven!

@@4pminphx as you are learning through the comments, that "n"word issue is a hot wire that you've grabbed, and "joke" and "sarcasm" are concepts that are extremely easy to lose in translation. People watching you from all over the world are brand newbies to YOU, who you are, and what your character/integrity is. Our standards are high, as you will see as you get to know BTS more. I really hope you take the time and effort to really learn about this group and their music/artistry, because they defy people's preconceptions, and are much deeper, more substantial, than expected. Please toss your expectations out, don't try to limit them with labels and pigeonholes, and PLEASE don't be offended by the feedback/skepticism you're receiving. Take a deep breath and just "Do You", and people will see you for who you are. Those that don't vibe with you will leave. The majority of us are open mindedly watchful and enthusiastic to helping genuine, respectful, open minded reactors learn about the group, its members, and the breadth/depth of their discography/musical artistry. Last note, the most vocal and quick to take offense are the actual 8-12 year olds, but the majority of the fandom is 20-40 and older (with about a quarter being male), capable of making our judgements quietly, without comment, so try to take the mature high road without punishing the rest of us💜✌️🖖 I'm looking forward to seeing your journey, so I hope you'll keep trying to learn more about BTS, the members, and their music

This is a new world, it's kpop, and here specifically bts (who paved kpop) they work with varied and diverse styles of music, both group and solo. In it, everyone produces, composes, dances, or raps or sings. I wish that if you are really interested in this and are going to continue with the reaction, you would be adept at this new culture, language and way, as much as there is a tone of joking about the pronunciation of namjoon (RM) nobody is obliged to have a perfect pronunciation, I think fans are more aware of this because we know everything we have been through and suffered in the army / Bts trajectory. Each member is amazing and distinct, I hope you guys can keep it up, I really think it's cool how real you guys sound, but be careful with this stuff (you're embarking into a totally different culture and way, so let go of your "normal" view a little bit) So I think it would be amazing to explore the BTS/Army world with you guys. He is a rapper with a genius IQ and their main songwriter.

Thanks for checking out BTS! Korean word you heard is 'naega', not the 'n' word. BTS has songs in full English, Japanese, Korean, most have English sprinkled in (like Fake Love). RM *is* the actual leader of the group; they are closer than brothers. All are very talented; they all write and produce music. It is a lot to take in between all of the members, cultural differences, the language barrier, the choreo, etc. Take your time! We will try to help you along the way. Most of the world listens to music in all English. It should not be so strange to listen to something in a different language, though it started that way for many of us. The rapline are so good; you will be blown away. Why we (myself included) thought only Americans could rap is so silly.
I agree Taylor's Guide to BTS would be good for you to watch. Taylor is an ARMY that just wants to tell people about BTS, so she made the guide. You have so many good questions that will be answered! It's long, but we WILL watch it all. Please don't skip parts, pause to be able to read everything, etc. Their story is really amazing! ruclips.net/video/huV_yIdxZPY/видео.html
Other MVs I'd recommend are ON: Kinetic Manifesto, Mic Drop (Steve Aoki remix), and Black Swan. To see them live, try Festa Room 2021 or the NPR Tiny Desk concert. Other commenters gave you some other great rapline and solo work suggestions. They have tons of different genres that they do. Hope to see more BTS from you!
Finally, YES...many of us do watch the videos twice. First time through for the visuals and then another time for the lyrics. (Then even a third time to watch a dance practice for the song) BTS lyrics are really, really good...please be sure to read them!

most stuff is written themselves, mainly rap line, and produced by them but they have some in house producers and writers who help out like pdogg, supreme boy, bang pd etc. Bang pd (aka bang si hyuk) formed big hit entertainment which is their label, and brought them together. Also the leader is Kim Namjoon (RM) and in bts a leader doesn't dictate who is the "main guy"...
the leader typically solves conflicts between the company or the members, he speaks fluent english and is basically the spokesperson of bts... he has many responsibilities which dont consist of just being the most popular or having the most screen time.
Jungkook is the main vocalist, he is at the center of most acts HOWEVER that also doesn't mean he is the "most talented" or "the face of bts" each member brings something to the table and each member is extremely talented :)

Perhaps you can watch BTS guides first if you are really insterested. Being thrown off by the korean language and by having many members in a group is not a good sign, if I am being honest. @secretyidentity2833 Год назад +7

Ok, SO many things. But first one: your first mistake was assuming anything when it comes to BTS. More often than not you'll be wrong.
1:00 BTS vs kpop will forever be a debate. There's a lot of nuance to these conversations and there's little to nothing I can do to explain it to you without you learning a bit a abt the korean music industry and BTS's history. I know it can be a more tedious reaction for you, but the video "BTS vs KPOP: a video essay" (30min) does the best job at explaining the basics of what you need to know.
3:02 out of the ~300 songs in BTS's catalog 3 of them are in english. You're reacting to a korean group, from a korean label, made of 7 korean men. YES, most of their discography is in korean. Due to cultural, econominal and historical reasons they also release a lot of japanese versions of their songs and some original tracks in japanese. Fun fact: in 2021 BTS became the first artist to have 3 songs in 3 different languages (Dynamite: english, Life Goes On: Korean and Film Out: Japanese) enter the billboard 200 chart.
Side note: most of their solo stuff is also in Korean. There are some english songs, like the on you saw from JK and Jimin's Like Crazy (english version).
3:58 a better question is what doesn't BTS do? I promise you that no matter what genre of music you like the most, there will be BTS songs you'll like. Doesn't mean you'll like EVERYTHING but chances are you're gonna enjoy their music if you give it an honest chance.
4:15 performance and MV outfits don't usually have anything to do with hierarchy within the group and everything to do with the concept for the song or album. But for the record, RM is the first member of BTS and their leader despite not being the oldest. JK is their center, he is a LEAD dancer and their MAIN vocalist, he does tons of ad libs, he also raps in some BTS songs so he is a technically SUB rapper. 8:00 This doesn't mean that JK is better than everyone in the group, they each have their strenghs, when it comes to live performances JK is a huge asset, he has a very clean, powerfull and the most stable voice while dancing (yes, they perform the entire dance of the MV during every live performance, for every single one of their songs) and he's also and amazing dancer.
Side note: I use terms like LEAD and MAIN bc those are actual group roles the members have. It goes MAIN, LEAD and SUB.
5:20 That's not actually what he says, it's just a korean word that sounds identical to it.
Fun fact: When they performed this song in the US they changed their lyrics bc they didn't want ppl to misunderstand them and cause any hurt to anyone or marginalized communities.
8:55 most of this video (and just their videos in general) are done with practical effects, including the moment where JK is running and the platforms start falling, there's usually a behind the scenes video for every MV, just make sure you find a video with subs in eng (channel "Bangtan Subs" has them for this one).
9:40 This is not their version of rap or hiphop, they do rap some verses in this songs but there are songs that are actual rap in korean (RM, Suga and J-hope are the rappers of the group and all have solo and trio tracks that are very much RAP and HIPHOP, just sung in korean instead of english). BTS was initally formed to be a hiphop group, not and idol group (what americans usually call kpop). Their initial album are very hiphop influenced, in their song "Hiphop lover" they describe their love for the genre and shout out artists and projects that inspired them while growing up.
11:40 lmao I'm dying, here's your time stamp. That's JK. Jungkook. And he didn't rap in this song but he is a sub rapper, and raps in some BTS songs like "Attack on Bangtan/ The Rise Of Bangtan".
12:30 funny you should say that, bc it actually does, well...not the artist himself (J-hope) but his character in the fictional storyline that runs through BTS albums called the B.U. (BTS UNIVERSE), it is said that when j-hope's character was very little his parents left him in an orphanage with nothing but a candy bar, you can kinda say that his parents had a "Fake Love" for him...nothing these boys put out is thoughtless pop music.
13:13 That's so funny, you would probably be interested to know that there's a whole "Rocking vibe mix" of this song that goes very hard on the guitar in the chorus and I actually prefer it to this original, it's like a whole new song. Very cool that you picked up on that vibe.
15:56 IDK if coach is a respectable enough title to call him (and Simon cowel is just an insult to him) but that would be Bang PD, the (now former) CEO of Big HIt Entertainment. If you watch the Taylor guide you'll get to know each of their stories coming together better, but it was basically a mix of auditions, crazy coincidences, luck and A LOT of hard work from everyone of them.
16:45 Yes, they are writting their own music. RM is their main songwritter. Suga is their main producer. All member compose melodies and help with the concepts, so all of their albums are very well thought out and they all have a message to send to their listeners that relates to whatever the group is living through, they also write and compose music for their own solo projects. WHICH BTW IS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS ARMYS DON'T LIKE IT WHEN PPL CALL BTS A KPOP GROUP. From their very first album they have always been deeply involved in the music they put out, something that was not common at all in kpop or "idol music".
17:01 they do work with choreographers, but J-hope, along with being one of the 3 rapper, is their main dancer and he contributes to choreo ideas and teaches and guides the members during live performances.
19:12 "it wasn't my favorite" that's ok, armys are not gonna go down on you for not liking something. BTS are very versatile, I'm confident some songs you'll like more than others, it all depends on what type of music you're into. I think you'd really like "Mic Drop Remix" or "Run BTS" (DON'T CONFUSE IT WITH THE SONG "RUN" BY BTS, it's 2 different songs).
Hope I got all your questions. If I didn't just watch the taylor guide lmao.

please don’t compare them to things, come with BTS with an open mind. Bts has a leader (RM), if you can’t seperate bts from pop or you can’t get over the korean language,,, please don’t listen to them anymore. BTS aren’t strictly pop or stritctly anything. I hope you watch Taylors guide to them and I hope you do watch another video with mine and everyone elses comments in mind!

Haven't gone through the comments to see if many other people have mentioned this but there is a fictional storyline that runs through many of BTSs albums and MVs. This video is part of it; The Bangtan Universe. So, it has a far deeper meaning when you know the storyline behind it. J-Hope is on those snickers bars for a reason. 🤣💜

I truly love how funny, smart, open minded and receptive you guys are. I wanted to give you guys some encouragement because K-pop fans are extremely intense and I don’t want you to be scared off, it’s a lot easier to be critical when someone doesn’t know something you care about. But you guys are doing a great job. Small mistakes are bound to happen with huge cultural differences.

Lol, I’m going to subscribe just to see how long it takes for you guys to figure this out. So much to learn! If you watch these guys long enough, you’ll be shocked at what you find out. Their discography is hundreds of songs, all genres, and yes, there is a leader. Three rappers and four vocal singers. I’ll be watching, it should be hilarious. They’ve been around for 10+ years, so you’ll be overwhelmed.

There are many BTS members, so it is difficult to distinguish them at first. Since they continue to grow and change, it is recommended to watch the latest music video first.

Ok 1st a word of caution. They are not a pop group in the western traditional sense. Yes they have some pop songs, just as they have songs in every genre, but their roots have always been hip-hop. 2 of the main songwriters were underground rapper's and the third was a street dancer. The group even studied under Warren G, Coolio and others. And idk who said they didn't have a leader but they do RM one of the rapper's but they make sure everyone gets equal song and stage time. They have been together since most were in their teens and consider each other as family

Thanks for the reaction. Who was the one you asked about, it was Jungkook.
I've followed BTS for almost a year and I fell in love with them because they are real artists who work hard to deliver a range of songs, dances and content to their fans. About the language, I know it's difficult, but see it as an opportunity to get to know other languages. 😂 We, from Brazil, for example, who speak Portuguese, read subtitles of things in English all the time. I read anime subtitles in Japanese. And I gladly read all Korean content by BTS. With time you get used to it. And about them, yes, they are the dream of many people around this world.💜🇧🇷

So BTS has a fictional storyline/lore that goes along with some of their music videos, concept trailers, performances, and there's even a webtoon! The fictional storyline for the guy laying on the snickers, J-Hope, involves his mother abandoning him at a carnival, telling him to close his eyes and count to ten, when he opened them she was gone and the last thing she ever gave him/left him with was a snickers bar.

bts song lyrics contain a lot of deep and motivating meanings if you interpret them correctly,, bts doesn't only make songs in Korean, but also some in Japanese and has 3 songs in English this is "butter" "dynamite" and "permission to dance" these three songs were released during a pandemic which aims to give enthusiasm during a pandemic with a positive aura..
even back then, "butter" and "dynamite" were #1 on the Billboard Hot 100

The leader is RM and he's the main songwriter for the grp.
And him being a leader doesn't mean he's the focus of the grp, in bts, they're all a focus. Depends on the song some might get to shine more in some song, but it's a team not your typical western grps where it's obvious the focus is on one person while the others are there

I know I keep writing in😂, but I’m trying to do it as I watch this.
I was born and raised in Spain and listened to a lot of American artists, but couldn’t understand a word they said and had not even lyrics to read to understand them. I didn’t care. I either liked the song or didn’t.
How do you think people in other non-English speaking countries listen to American or British artists?
Music transcends language and that is why BTS is so amazing. At least I can read their lyrics and fall in love with not only the melodies, beats, but their positive messages.
Americans are experiencing for the first time what it’s like to listen to great music without understanding the words. I had to do it throughout my childhood and it never bothered me, so it doesn’t bother me now either. 😊💜💜💜💜💜💜💜😊

The guy with the sequin jean jacket with the fire scene is Suga, one of the three rappers. He recently released his solo album under his alias Agust D if you’d like to check him out. I recommend Haegeum (which is the name of a traditional Korean instrument but also means “the lifting of a ban/freeing what’s forbidden”).

You guys are really struggling with what so many people struggle with: you're trying to box them in to some genre or some idea of a boy band or a sound. The problem ...and the beauty ...of BTS is they will not be boxed in. With 300+ songs in their discography as a group, subunits and solos, they will never stop surprising you. Rap, hip hop, pop, R&B, tinges of rock, Latin pop, jazz and combinations thereof. Suga, one of BTS' songwriters & producers who does his solo work under the name Agust D, once said "You’ll like BTS music if you listen without prejudice." Truer words have never been spoken. They didn't become the biggest group of this generation with millions of fans of all ages, sexes, nationalities & races for no reason. Just keep exploring & enjoy the ride.
