How do you take care of the dragons during the hottest days of the summer? I see that you have little to no yellowing on your plants and I will like to know what is your trick. Thank you
@@GraftingDragonFruitwould love to see how well these products preform for these dragonfruit! I’ve thought about moisture meters but assumed they aren’t great at accuracy so I’d love to see a comparison of when you think it’s ready to water and when the probe thinks it ready to water
Thanks for the video, it clarified some questions I had. Some tips regarding #4: - The 55 gallon blue plastic barrels are a great option, they are durable, withstand sun and temperature changes and don't crack with weight like other plastic containers. Plus with one barrel you can cut it and have two pots. However try to get ones that are food safe, a lot of those used barrels sold around come from chemical facilities. Even if they are clean still those chemicals can stay inside the surface of the barrel and eventually leech to the soil. The barrels I have come from a food production plant (they were used for storing sugar syrup) so they don't have any dangerous chemicals in them. - Although they are called 55 gallon drums that's their fill capacity (for their original purpose), their real total capacity is 60 gallons, so if you cut them exactly in half your will have two nice 30 gallon pots. I cut mine and on each I planted 5 cuttings attached to the trellis I made from Richard's video (the version 2 without the concrete base). To fill them I used on each: 2 1/2 bags of potting soil (40 quarts bag) 1 bag of perlite (5 quarts bag) Half bag of general purpose coarse sand (50 lbs bag) About a cup of slow release fertilizer for growing vegetables and fruits. A 5 gallon bucket filled with soil I had around, dry leaves and branches and rocks. With that I filled the pot up to two inches below the rim. Planted both pots on November 4, in less than a month all the cuttings already have new growth in both pots.
Hi Richard, I've painted the outsides of my pots with a very light gray exterior latex paint (same color as our house) to keep them cooler in the sun (in San Diego), but I haven't tried comparing them to an unpainted pot. Have you ever tried that with your black nursery pots? That might make an interesting video, use a thermometer to see if a pot painted white stays cooler than a black one. That could help the moisture stay more even. Thanks for all of the great info on your channel.
Have you tried somatic fusion grafting? Is it worth the crazy long time if it even takes vs. cross pollination? Are the end result similar? I played around with some of my extra cuttings this fall and got one really good fusion between a Connie Mayer and Israel and was wondering if it’s even worth trying and the wait.
If the one that I made takes I’ll send you some pics and give you a cutting when it’s big enough. Even if it doesn’t take it was a fun trying! You should definitely give it a try when you have some extra cuttings.
Hi Richard quick question . Can you graft a fruit bud to a different branch. Rather than just removing to make room other fruit more space. I would like to relocate the bud
Hi Richard! I just inherited a dragon fruit plant in a 5 gal pot that has a central stalk but was allowed to kind of go wild and now has branches going all different directions with multiple segments. They are thinner then your plants, its kind of a mess. Should I try to trellis all of them up into some sort of organized plant or prune everything except the central stem and trellis that?
Same issue here with a three year old American Beauty. I’ve determined I must completely dismantle the pot and divide it into four stalks per new pot using the post grow method (or similar.). My issue is I live in Oklahoma, so the pot has to be small enough to maneuver inside in the winter.
Can you show how many total branches and length you want to keep over the years. When should it be maxed and not want I have more because mine got blown down by the wind as the top was too heavy for 100L pot
I don’t. There’s a cat around my house that fortunately takes care of that for me. Recommend like finding a mesh bag or contraption to cover your fruits
For myself it seems that they are the one fruit critters seem to ignore. Squirrels attack everything but my dragon fruit. I'm guessing it is the thorns of the plant that keeps them at bay.
Hi Richard, I'm from Switzerland and we have very cold weather here except in summer. That's why I have my dragon fruit in my conservatory. I have had them for 2 years now. I use a cactus fertilizer every 2 weeks. My problem is that not only are they not producing flowers, but many of the branches are growing very thin. Do you know what the possible reason for this is?
@Grafting Dragon Fruit, hey Richard-what's your advice or opinion on using Foxfarm Ocean Forest /Happy Frog for dragonfruit plant, young or mature ones, just soil topping or overall amending with 50/50 of both into the planting containers to help with the growth of my plant?.I've other people who had use the Foxfarm products on their plants ,it burns them- is the true?.
I’ve noticed organic matter mixed into my soil always leads to mushrooms growing in my pot/garden. Assuming it’s something to do with things decomposing too fast for their own good-which isn’t terribly good for soil quality either.
Last question😅 i have one grafted trisia, planted on pot for 25days, bruni 7days, sugar dragon 7days,but still no new growth , generally for trisia and others is there any specific days after which i can see new growth from the graft!?

hi i've my dragon fruit flowers always fail and yellowing after pollination, do u have some solutions for me? thanks
I use a soil moisture meter that has a 10 inch probe. It tells me when to water objectively and I've never had a problem over watering since I got it.
Nice!! I’ll have to look into that

From the get go I started using 25gal pots, but they do run abit more expensive.

Hi Richard quick question . Can you graft a fruit bud to a different branch. Rather than just removing to make room other fruit more space. I would like to relocate the bud
Yes, that’s totally possible! I’ve done that to store bought fruits when I find a stem and use the nodes to create a new branch by grafting.

Should we cut off the branch if all the nodes have already been bloomed

That’s just up to you. I like to keep mine neat for the most part. Everyone has a difference preference
I grow mine in the ground with 6X6 posts.
What is you put a cutting in the ground upside down by accident? Will it still grow
How much are you charging for your cutting? The sweet delicious one
