D.I.Y Dimple Die Gussets for my Mk2 Escort! 👍

- In this video I take another step towards building my latest Mk2 Escort restoration into the ultimate drift toy/ daily driver.
With some gussets added into the engine bay (some of which I actually fabricated myself) it should mean the body shell will be able to take the strain of hard driving without throwing the steering geometry off too much. I also added a cut out panel for the big radiator.
In other news, I have been sent some parts by some of my subscribers.

Little by little your skills are improving 👏🏻
Slowly but surely mate! 👍 When I first welded 'Maude' up years ago I got better and better and welding with each repair. The I didn't pick up a welder for 10 years so its like starting again! 😃
Thanks Marcus the more welding you do the better you will get at it. Cheers
Cant fault you Marcus your having a go and thats great your learning as you go too any one can give it to others to do but now your not just the owner well done mate
Keep going mate 👍🏼
Looking good Marcus. Learning as you go. I like the job you did on the upper panels. Once they’re all welded in proper like, they’ll be a great addition.
I do like the spoiler and the diffuser, and agree with going full width on the spoiler.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks mate! 👍 I’m probably going to re-think the welding on the top gussets do maybe the gas running out was a blessing in disguise. It’ll look sweet when I’m done. 👍
Great effort dude !
She's deffo gathering momentum 😊
You are doing a good job keep it up loving the content
Glad you enjoy the videos mate! 👍
Look at the gussets on that !!
There will soon be no job to big to wave the welder at.
STOP calling yourself an idiot!!
Im loving these new whole hearted efforts. Keep going great video ❤
Well done again Marcus, your welding is getting way better, dont see any bodging at all mate, great achievement on making you own gussets mate, brilliant keep up the good work👍
great vidio of updates & humor too, lol. Keep them comming mate
always thought you was near my area, and I finally saw you driving down my road the other day in the Mk 1! gave you a thumbs up but ya missed it lol
That T shirt looks well smart pal
Thanks mate! 👍 The Series 1 collection came out soooo good! Get yours here petrolheadstyle.com/collections/mk3-escort-series-1-rs-turbo
Wow, im impressed, i told you about the firewall/ chassis leg/ inner fender gussets several years ago. Well done for installing them, not sure they will help for drifting, we used them back in the day for rallying where the entire front end would bend upwards after lots of big jumps, but they can't hurt. A strut to strut brace will probably be more use to you especially a triangular one going back to firewall, it will stiffen up front end considerably. Might need more power to pull all the extra weight around though.
Marcus stop messing about with disposable gas canisters and get yourself a refillable argosheild cylinder much cheaper in the long run and give a better weld 👍
Thanks for the advice mate! 👍 I think I should have got a big bottle before I started doing all the welding. I probably havn't got a lot more welding to do on the car now, so I may as well keep buying the small bottles. Also, to be honest I live a lifestyle (through choice) where I rarely have £100+ spare to buy a full hobby weld bottle or similar, BUT I can usually make sure Iv got £15 for a disposable bottle from Toolstation, to do whatever job I am working on at the time. 👍
Marcus I have a Clarke mig welder and must go through a tenth of the gas you do, I literally just welded 18m of garden railings and didn't run out of gas! I can only assume you have a leak.
Also I hire a cylinder of pure argon for my tig welder and its a big outlay but means you don't need to worry about a replacement for a very long time.
I just use CO2 gas from old out if date fire extinguishers, or if you know anyone in the pub trade borrow a CO2 cylinder from them and exchange it, lot cheaper than disposables.
Also regarding the amount of gas used and your self-critical welding take some time practicing on new metal varying gas flow and wire feed, a close joint is key to a good weld👍
Hwsit buddy, shout out from SA.
Love following your builds and progress and planning. Its s great motivation..
I hope you post alot more on this hiedi. Id like to see the ins and outs of fitting the zetec lump into the bay, sump mods ect ect..
Great stuff keep up the great content
Great progress mate 👌 keep it up 👍
Thanks mate! 👍
It's coming on great. Great stuff. Best wishes.
Thanks mate! 👍
Hi mate great good.. there is a company called hobby gas you can get medium size bottles of gas and they deliver too 👍👍
Thanks for the advice mate! 👍 Iv looked at the hobbyweld bottles. I think I should have got one before I started doing all the welding. I probably havn't got a lot more welding to do on the car now, so I may as well keep buying the small bottles. Also, to be honest I live a lifestyle (through choice) where I rarely have £100+ spare to buy a full hobby weld bottle, BUT I can usually make sure Iv got £15 for a disposable bottle, to do whatever job I am working on at the time. 👍
Get a roll cage, they do well as preventing shell flex
Borked welds on the upper gussets, cut them back out and re-assess. Preparation is key.
Thanks for the advice mate! 👍 I think I’m going to cut those welds off, then flatten the upper bulkhead down so it’s flush with the gusset, and then weld it like a regular overlap joint. I was wrong to think I could ‘shoot’ the welds underneath the lip of the upper bulkhead. 👍
@@marcushayesford at least you learned. That's the advantage. Doesn't have to be perfect but don't leave looking like a cats arse.
2 wings are better thaN one also your welds work mine probably wood hav holes burnt yhrough sumfin 😀
Ayy up Marcus & cat,Marcus you are no idiot if you can fabricate the top gussets and teach your self to weld you are doing fine.as for the top gussets cot the lip off the bulk head so when you weld them on and ground back it will look much tidier. But buy a refillable cylinder for welding it will last longer and be much cheaper in the long run
How handy are you with fibreglass ? You could widen the wing Ian gave you, that would look smart that one, the curves do suit the body shape better, not sure if it was you I said about you could actually buy alu sheet and use the alloy brackets and end pieces make a wider spoiler from it, perhaps.
Also, i think you need a turbo in your life, just a thought 🤔👌🏻💯
I know one man who is a genius with fibreglass and carbon fibre, my good friend Garry Bull. Maybe he'd be able to use Ians wing to make a mould for an identical one that is wider??? . . . . . I defo need a turbo in my life. Im already dreaming about a different (non-Ford) engine for 'Heidi's future (with a turbo). One step at a time tho, and 'Maude's ST170 will get 'Heidi' sideways in the mean time. 👍
@@marcushayesford Yuh carbon sounds tasty 👌🏻i designed a upgrade gas tank for my 1981 XR200R dirt bike 'restomod' I want made in carbon, barely anyone around who does it I've found, a aluminium one in the shape I've made is + £2000
@@marcushayesford maxpeedingrods to a turbo kit for £500 comes with intercooler turbo all the connecting pieces to weld yourself complete kit, you could also get a better turbo and flange and intercooler for it if you wanted...that's what I'm looking at for a car project hopefully next year
Everyone is fitting Chinese turbos nowadays! Even if you have to buy one per year they are a financial win. 😀
@@marcushayesford 😂
Well done Marcus the more you do the welding the better you will be at it the gussets you made did you weld the joints where you bent the metal??
Even though its a Dad's car (AKA) 4 door, that boot spoiler and defuser is a mess, and I mean a mess
It'll defo be a mess once I'v drifted it into a wall! 🤪
@marcushayesford 🤣🤣🤣 I don't wish that on you pal, its just not my cup of tea, upgrade your mk 1 even more
I have some quite crazy plans for the Mk1 as well, all in good time. 👍
I am not an expert but I think you are being hard on yourself about your welding, it is definitely getting better.
Probably better welding in the garage so gas dont get blown away
Thats why the welds look black an sooty an possibly play with the power
Looking good though
Loving the build
Not to crittasize your build
Shouldn't be priming the panel before welding it will affect the weld quality by interfering with the welding gas, cleaner the metal is better weld plus a waste of primer. Everytime you said gusset I couldn't stop laughing, my NAN had dementia when her Daughter did the washing she shout may sure you give the gusset a good scrub on my pants and no starch.
@danielbaker4820 Im always grateful for any advice or criticism mate. 👍
@michaelmason5459 I thought it would be better because its weld through primer??? That way there will be less bare metal left between joints etc (altho Im sure the bits very close to the welds gets burned off) 👍
Tbh the wing on there is half effort, if you’re going to do a wing go big, the small looks lost and looks like it came off a k-car. Gussets are to sort out that weak spot between the bulkhead and chassis legs
It’s mad how my current wing was the widest I could see on eBay and Amazon (out of the ridiculously cheap ones within my budget of course) even tho most cars nowadays are wider than a Mk2 Escort. . . . Its definitely a flex point between the bulkhead and inner wings. The sealer always cracks in that area. My Mk2 has got rust bubbling near the bonnet hinge which I’m guessing is maybe partly due to things flexing in that area too. Hopefully all the gussets will improve the stiffness of the chassis a worthwhile amount. 👍
Don't use so much weld through primer, it is for spot welding ( electrode and mig plug ) and not really for open Mig fillets. It is burning and diluting your sheilding gas giving you that soot all over everything. your work will be cleaner without that stuff.
Thanks for the advice mate! 👍
send me that narrower wing and i can make it wider and take a mould off it to make a new wing in either fibreglass or carbon
I was wondering if this would be possible and I knew if anyone could do it, it would be you! 👍
@@marcushayesford im the man for the job 👍
@@garrybull4165 Actually pretty excited about seeing what you can do! 👍
@@marcushayesford i do have a couple ideas for that wing that would make it look way better and create more downforce 😁
Great work.
Do you run a generator?
Thanks mate! 👍 Yes I got a generator from Costco. I was surprised it actually runs the MIG welder. If I knew that 6 months ago I may have actually welded 'Maude' up and kept 'Heidi' standard. . . . . No going back now tho! 😃
@@marcushayesford hiw many kw does a welder use?
I don't know how much gas you're using as you weld, but you only need a minimum amount of gas, just a wiper not a flood.
Raf
Marcus, those throw away bottles are a joke, get yaself a REGULATOR, and a bottle of CO2 from ya local pub, it's arguable, that you need argon,🤬 but for over 20yrs I've been welding, with CO2 never had a problem, 👍 my bottle lasts me 6mnths and at a cost of £18 it's a good do 👍
Hi great effort 💪👍🙌🤙🫡👏👋🏻 I have gas bottles to give you. Need to know best way for me to drop them off to ya or meet up thanks
Thanks for the positivity mate! 👍 . . . . Really???? That would be amazing!!! 👍👍👍 Feel free to drop me an email to marcushayesuk@gmail.com 👍
