Nice documentary! You could go more into the details, like: different neighborhoods (huge differences between the north, center and south parts), and more about cooking at home vs. eating out, and also please remember that a huge part of your budget is about kids and their education. But I agree that with 2000 - 2500 you can live in Tel Aviv and enjoy it. But there is a lot of people who make less and it's really difficult for them. Best wishes!
2000$ is an ambitious budget to live in TLV. 6700 shekels means you can cover all the basic costs if you live with roommates. Regarding your question about food at home or in restaurant, as a general rule food is expensive , I would say that in supermarket Israelis pay 30% more than Europeans. As per restaurants you need to add 12 % service so 25$ roughly for a dish without ordering a drink..
To live alone on a TLV you need about $ 2500 at least. Most apartments will cost between $ 1300 and $ 1500, the cost of the bills is between $ 150 and $ 200, the cost of food is about $ 300 if you cook at home, $ 250 if you are a vegan who cooks at home. Entertainment will cost you about $ 200 a month and more, public transportation is not reliable so in the end you will buy a car or a scooter or both. A scooter cost about $ 1000, a used car about $ 10-15K, insurance and a car license - $ 1500. And this is your basic expense if you are single. For a couple it's a bit less to pay because you share the cost of living, for a family, the cost of kindergartens is about $ 1K per month until age 3, an apartment for 3 or 4 will cost between $ 2,500 to $ 3,000.
I left Tel Aviv and went back to NYC, because I couldn't afford living there - not even in Ramat Gan or Givataiim, outskirts of Tel Aviv. In NYC I don't pay taxes, heat, water - which is common in Tel Aviv. AVERAGE salaries are the same, around $40k but comparing to NY most people can maximum earn $80k - employers pay up to 10k nis - which is considered a lot...and not everyone rich this amount, only 2% maybe. Unlike NY the top salaries are $150k... I live in upper Manhattan which is similar rent to average central Tel Aviv apartment....and in NYC I use the subway, in Tel Aviv I could even afford a car, and if I had lived in Petach Tikvah for example which is slightly cheaper - I would have had to buy a car, transportation is one of the worse in worldwide. Regarding food - expensive, but they have the best quality I've ever seen in my life, amazing and tasty dairy products, fruits and vegetables similar prices to NYC more or less, but premium level - can't compare NY to Israel's food.
