      I agree! The style of armor which uses overlapping horizontal plates to articulate pieces is a late 16th century Italian Anime/Anima style. It affords GREAT mobility made even better by the flexibility of leather. :D Hordak's armor looks to be in this same style, but with a stylized tabard covering the front center section

      @Taurusus 5 лет назад +11

      That looks great! I got worried when you started riveting the top bits together, like, "... Did he forget this was going to be articulated?" But I shoulda known better than to doubt you!
      One thing I would appreciate is a guide to attaching non-leather materials to leather. Canvas and cloth primarily, but things like glass or plastic (for goggles, say, or like a phone holder, as much as these don't really seem to be the style you're going for on this channel) as well. I'm working on a pauldron, and my plan was to kind of sheath it around a cloth sleeve, but I'm struggling to come up with a good way to affix it due to my regretful decision to include a large lamellar section down the bicep. I was hoping to avoid sewing, but I fear it might be inevitable.

      Greaves and tassets, please, to finish the set. As an amateur leather working enthusiast, I cannot tell you how excited each and every video in this series has made me. I look forward to these more than the release of the latest Marvel movie.
      I have no criticisms. Your videos are professional, concise, have excellent backing soundtracks, present all relevant information, and the purchased patterns that go with them are easy to print and use.
      My only request is for more. More armor. Please finish this set and, if possible, start a new one. Learning from these has been both fascinating and exciting.
      If you do want to introduce another armor set in the future, what would you think about upping the level to have people build a set with an intermediate difficulty level? I think after completing all these tutorials, your viewers may be able to take their crafting to the next level.

    Another amazing pattern! Can't wait to see the distressing video. You could also use a light box to line up the patterns, or what I do is line them up by placing them on one of my windows on a sunny day while I tape them together. Would love to see greaves of some kind. Lots of cosplay uses different things that look like boots and you could attach the sabaton to them.

    Alright, the video just hit the 8 min mark and you just mentioned distressing and I am scratching my head now asking "So, then what was the big deal about find the imperfections earlier on the leather?" • @Princearmory
      @Princearmory  5 лет назад

      Project flow: Start with clean leather you can control the result of, make sure it is consistent. > Determine your cosmetic effects and proceed to decorate to your preferences > Distress, or not distress, according to preference. EZ Alternate plan: Determine up front you want a distressed piece, search for scraps and hides with extra brands and blemishes, use said areas to construct suit. also EZ. These vids demonstrate various methods for everyone, and in general, don't nit pick lol

    • @bjornsworkshop9288
      @bjornsworkshop9288 5 лет назад

      There are many different types of blemishes that typically show up on cow hides, but they can generally be narrowed down to three categories:
      1. blemishes that cause weak spots
      2. blemishes that do not affect the leather's strength/flexibility
      3. blemishes that cause hard spots.
      Identifying flaws in the hide and working around them will give you a much better experience working the leather, and will help your finished project look, feel, and be as good as it can be. If you want a specific style of weathering (like this breastplate) but then there is one 4x4 inch section that doesn't take dye the same way, it would break the cohesive look of the piece.
      There is nothing wrong with featuring the natural flaws of leather in your projects. Brands, scars, bug bites, etc can all add some really neat character, as long as they are in the right place at the right time.

    I'm very interested in how you accomplished the distressed look on this armor set. Very much looking forward to that video when it is released. I'm planning to make a set of spaulders and bracers using the patterns I bought from your website. Talent is some innate thing you are born with that you either have or you don't.... Skill on the other hand is something that you acquire through observation, asking questions, and attention to detail. • @bjornsworkshop9288
      @bjornsworkshop9288 4 года назад

      There are TONS of options for attaching adornments, but I find stitching/lacing and riveting to be the most secure options. To use your example of a foam skull, you can cut off the back 1/4th of the skull to create a flat surface, then use a heated poker to melt a tunnel from "ear to ear" on the skull. Then punch a couple of holes in the armor, lace/thread slips through and ties at the back. Super glue the cordage closed for extra security and you're rockin' and rollin'

    This gotta be the best looking piece of armor you have done so far (in the tutorial series, i mean)

    Yeah small blemishes and branding marks ok, but hand/foot sized holes or half size sides sold as whole sides full of holes happen too...

    Ok, this solves my Knight of the Dragon breastplate issue! I was racking my brains last night, trying to figure out how to make something I can actually move & sit down in (I'm building most of it from craft foam). I have a feeling if I make the main sections out of craft foam, then cover that with individual leather scales, it'll be stiff enough to keep its shape, but not too heavy or bulky.

    You can use a kettlebell as a forming tool. I've used one for a few years and it works great

    Can you show how to attach the shoulders to the chestpiece? That part gives me a really hard time.

    • @TheNoobstalker
      @TheNoobstalker 5 лет назад +2

      I agree I want to see how this is done maybe a short video to make sure us noobs don't mess it up? I am guessing you remove the full shoulder strap and cut it down like the side straps mark the holes and rivet it but I just want to make sure before I go for it.

      I don't know if it really warrants a full video. Just align the shoulder over the shoulder, and either overlapping the shoulder strap, or butted to it, however you'd want wear it really, and use some something either a strap or leather tab. the main goal is to make it hinge from the top of the shoulder to allow for more movement. You'd use either that, or the chest strap, not both.

      @@Princearmory That sound good I will give it a try once I finish the chest piece. I have made my own leg armor using the principles from the arm piece. It seems you would want to connect it to the check armor somehow to hold the weight of the leg armor?

    • @LordDecy
      @LordDecy 5 лет назад

      @@Princearmory my issue when I tried this was the shoulder wouldn't stay in place correctly and would end up sliding back or forward on the chestpiece.

    Watching your videos has inspired me to get into leatherwork, so thanks for that! I'm curious about the distressing technique on the leather surface. You mentioned you would cover it in another video but I can't find anything on it. I've been using lava rocks to create textures on my leather, but super curious about how a professional does it. Any ideas? Keep up the fantastic work and videos!!

    Do you have any patterns for a more historical breastplate? The type that has a globe shape and cuts at the natural waist to allow for movement, instead of cutting at the hips which is restrictive.
