I mean Minnie is terrible regardless but we’ve only heard one side of the story. The parents might have actually parented her badly. That’s not an excuse because she kept doing those things into adulthood but it’s possible they did compare her to her like sister instead of actually helping her with her grades. We don’t know.

@@BrightElk agreed, those kind of things don't appear out of nowhere, people don't just develop awful personalities in vacuum. Also, having a sibling at 1 y.o. is already a trauma within itself. Clearly a case of unresolved early trauma and jealousy. Younger siblings are usually oblivious of how badly the parents treated the older one, they just don't seem to notice those things. It took me many deep and vulnerable conversations with my brother for him to realize how differently our parents treated us and where a lot of my insecurities stemmed from while he had no such problems at all. We used to fight a lot, even physically, and it got real bad, but now we're best friends. A lot of it thanks to years of therapy on my end.

My sister tried to destroy my marriage. She was envious of me all the time. She would always make passive aggressive remarks to me and after I graduated and started work at a hospital she was so jealous that she applied for a nurse position in a nursing home and actually got the job. She bragged to my parents about how much more she made than me and acted like she was better. She was fired shortly after when they discovered she wasn’t certified as a nurse and in fact had never gone to nursing school in her life. Some people are very mentally ill. I have a similar sister. She tried to have my children taken from me with claims of unfounded child abuse. She has always been jealous that I have a stable relationship, own my own home and have the ability to be a stay-at-home mom. I've dealt with her jealousy my entire life but that was the boiling point and I cut contact afterwards.

Her getting a job as a nurse is partly the fault of the nursing home. Most states participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), a national database listing licensed nurses. If they didn't check that she was licensed, they should've. I know things like that used to happen before verification tools like this existed but this shouldn't happen now. I know that my state participates in NLC and also has its own state board of nursing verification. My daughter is a nurse and is listed on both verification sites. Do want to note that the NLC has LPN/LVNs as "PN." NLC also lists inactive licenses and the reason they are not active, including revocation. My mother is listed and she hasn't been licensed in 17 years. She let her license expire because she was disabled and no longer able to work as a nurse.

What Minnie did at the baby shower is a type of irrational, reactionary behavior that I call "not thinking about what happens five minutes prior to or past taking a piss". Absolutely no concept of forethought.
Minnie was so hyperfixated on the very idea of upsetting OP that she didn't stop to think how everyone else would react, how her lies could easily be disproven and she obviously didn't think about how Larry, her now EX-husband, would respond. And look where it all got her. I was surprised that she made no further move to harrass OP and her family, though. I guess the last-minute self-preservation took over entirely and prompted Minnie's city move. It was the only smart thing she did.
At the same time, her entire family, in laws, and friends alike at the baby shower saw and heard it all. She basically an outcast and a black stain of the family. She would get no help nor support what so ever as people would steer clear of her after that incident.
It was best she left for good, and even if she got help, it still doesnt undo the damage she done and caused. Trust has been broken.

He fought with a waiter after getting drunk at their wedding, so probably wasn't squeaky clean himself and knew that at best they'd get cited for disturbing the peace or something like that, because they'd be both at fault. Which is bullshit when she's the only one who's shown to be physically abusive, but he could have been a different kind of abusive in return.

Minnie is a monster, but i would be a little jealous if my little sister somehow ended up in the same grade as me if I started school first.
This story sound like op's sister needed therapy and was constantly compared to Op, every moment of her life, controlled by their parents (I'm assuming cause they controlled what career Minnie gotten and saw her as a constant disappointment).
Still op is nta but like why didn’t op ever told their parents about how Minnie felt or ask them to bring her to therapy or like why didn’t the parents try to check up on her during their youth? I feel like in the early years of their life the parents probably didn't do a good job raising them properly and picked favourites and was always very strict with their older child. The worst they did to her was by making her choose computer science while clearly she had more interest in art and should have picked fashion designing. Since this is an AITA story: NTA at all. OP, I think your only fault is actually buying into your sister's "change of heart", cause I find it hard to believe a leopard can truly change its spots. That level of jealousy and projection, her so-called "prank" was really an attempt to nuke your relationship, and I am not surprised your husband does not like her, cause some people have that "sixth sense" to know someone is trouble. I may sound harsh, but by going no contact with her, you have effectively washed your hands off her, and it should stay that way too.
