- In this video Pro Tools Expert Technical Editor James Ivey takes a look at the new Warm Audio WA-87 large diaphragm condenser microphone. The WA-87 has been developed to takes it's tone from those classic and vintage German "87" microphones but add some of the characteristics that we love from more modern mics like a nice shiny top end and warm yet tight lows. James puts the WA-87 to work on drum overheads and guitar in a small jazz trio setting.
Got a pair of these running through Warm's WA412 preamps as overheads and they sound awesome.
WA87 -> UA Apollo Twin Duo -> Neve 1073 Plugin w/unison -> UA 1176 Plugin w/unison -> Pro Tools -> Antares Autotune 8 = Godlike tone for dirt cheep
Aside from the WA87 how is ANY of that gear you're using 'cheap?'
Good chain except autotune. In my opinion, a godlike singer is strong and natural. Not overly processed to the point of being perfectly on key
You don’t need a Duo for this either. Solo would do
@@andyzamboknee because the only gear is the mic and apollo lol the rest are plugins as he stated
Hello, I am selling a wa87 for 350 dlls if anyone interested.
i just picked up one of these in lieu of the real deal ─ i've used the U87 and U87ai in studios before, and I'm a huge fan of telefunken u47... but even after just an initial test run, I'm blown away by how great this mic sounds. great investment so far.
I am selling a wa87 for 350 in mint condition if you need the pair. Cheers
Its based on a vintage 87 which is probably why you like it more than the 87's you have tried before. The old 87i's have less midrange and more open highs than the AI version and are just overall smoother.
well done, james. thanks!
I've plugged this in to my focusrite 2i2 and I noticed that I had to put up the gain all the way to hear anything. Does this amp require better pre amps to perform properly? Would a cloud lifter work or a better preamp?
At risk of being an a**. Have u turned phantom power on?
Bro I'm guilty of this, but you MAY have the pad switch on, which requires you to crank the gain to get good levels if it is.
It’s bc the focusrite pre amps are weak🤷🏽♂️
Im wondering if you had used vintage 87s and also didnt like them? Because I definately dont like the 87ai but Ive heard they are quite different to the 87s everyone loves on vocals.
Thank you for your review. WA87 is greate. And... I want to know what audio interface you used.
Haha, loving this blues Jazz thing, such lovely sound on this!
awesome drumming dude!
Just ordered one yesterday, really looking forwarded on trying it on vocals
Caffeina Studio how does it sound to you vocals?
Brother to be honest in my opinion it sounds just as good as the U87, one of the engineers that works with me was tracking at a bigger studio using the U87 Ai and at Caffeina she was using the WA87 for backup vocals she ended up feeling so comfortable on the WA87 that she did most of the vocals at Caffeina, I'm really looking forward for the release of that song and I should be doing a shoot out soon on the U87 Ai vs the WA87... The WA87 has been one of my best investments up to date!! I highly recommend it!!
Caffeina Studio Thanks for resonding. I have heard some good things about this mic and some bad. I might pull the trigger on it after reading what you just said about it. Im using a blue bird right now. Im for sure the warm audio is a lot better then that mic. How do you think this mic will pair up with a bae 1073? thinking about buying that pre with it.
I have a pair of blue birds myself they are good mics but at times they do get a bit harsh on the high end, the WA87 just sounds smoother and seems to be more versatile to my ears "and I'm not only saying that because of the fact that it has a switchable polar pattern a -10 db pad and a low cut that's just a plus" , now the BAE 1073 is a badass pre the most authentic recreation in my opinion since it has the Carnhill transformers, I'm sure it'll sound superb with the WA87 " I've used the U87 with a BAE 1073 pre in the past and I would feel pretty comfortable using the WA87 on the same applications"
Caffeina Studio Okay thank you. Yeah the blue bird can be harsh on the top end it takes some eq to get it right. Check out stam audio i heard they make some great gear i been thinking about buying some of there gear as well. They make a desk top version of the neve 1073 for 500 that comes with carnhill or sawter transformer. As well as a dual 1073 rack mount version for 900 with the same transformers. As well as other great gear.
I don't think WA uses the exact same negative feedback in the circuit to tame the 3k-5k range that a K67 capsule exhibits in it's raw form, so the WA87 has a tad more brightness than a Neumann U87. Its not as bright as a linear microphone circuit, but slightly brighter than the U87's negative feedback circuit.
Well this sounds like a fun bit of kit.
Esque vid bro 🤘😎
Im between the WA-87, KSM32, and TLM 102 as a Lead Vocal Mic. I have a nasal type of voice. My budget is about 1000 bucks. Help please?
I don't know if you're going to see this as I'm a week late, but I have this and so far I'm not taking it back. With that said, with your budget, you have a couple of options...the slate digital VMS I heard is great, from this guy as well. he reviewed it. This mic of course and theres a company called Gauge, which I own also, that I really like as well, and their mic is $150! I picked it up as a less expensive version of the slate thing, but that mic is really, really cool. I've used it more than the WA87 and will keep both for sure. I don't know anything about the tlm102 except its a transformerless mic, same with the Gauge ECM-87. ...in all honesty I would've pickd up the Slate mic if I had the $ at the time and then I saw the Gauge mic, they have software for their ECM-87 for $25 that is similar to slate VMS, and was stoked...so that's my .02
Shane i havent bought anything yet, not in any rush. was looking into the slate vms as well i like the idea of having a wide variaty of mic emulations with one single mic.
I totally agree! I went I tad different way than slate myself...seeing their new stuff looks really cool though. I'm a singer also and wasn't sure what to get either. I was In a studio a few years ago and my vox sounded really good, I am pretty sure it was an 87 as the studio was nice, but I don't think U47 or 67 nice, may have been though. 87 seemed to make more sense so I went with this WA87. As I was saying I haven't used it as much on my voice, but I have with my acoustic and I can say I very much like it for that so I'm sure on it'll sound good my vox too. I have the Gauge ECM-87 which is a less expensive slate thing, but the guys at gauge aren't selling mics for $ if you can believe that. Their setup has some of the same emu's as the slate, but I really don't know how it compares, I just know I like it and they are pretty cool at Gauge. I bought a mic pre they had out for a bit also to pair with it. I actually picked up this WA87 because its a transformer mic and I swear Neumann is gonna sue them( I honestly don't know if that's gonna happen and I really hope it doesn't) SO many peeps are digging this thing I thought I better grab one before I cant...I'm stoked I did. Always good to have more than 1 mic and with your budget you can totally get both and figure what you like or go Slate...I wanted a hardware pre and I bought the Warm WA2A so my chain is pretty cool. I can always use emu pre's in my daw too. Man! what a post...sorry for the novel Good luck!
@@Ekeezee the ksm 44 is amazing id get it fastttt also i own it and several NEUMANN mics also a wa87 and several other mics tube mics etc the KSM 44 is superbbbb
RØDE NT1 (original one, forst series, NOT the crappy NT1A they sell today)
Hello James, how you going to say you don't like anything with 87 behind it. The problem with this is that its saying it's mimic the U87. I guess it sounds good but not compared to U87 and that is the scam. Other than that I like your stuff. You seem to promote them for free gear.
I just bought the WA-87 last night and it’s a clear quality sound. My only thing is that I have no preamp and I’m running this mic into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. I have to have the volume on the interface all the way up just to get any audio. What preamp would you recommend? I am considering the WA-73EQ.
Gap pre73 plus mk3 is amazing amazing!!!! I have it and several NEUMANN mics also a wa87 and man wheww awesome sounds
It's funny, because your distaste for the traditional U87 bottom end is one of the things that bothers me about the WA87. The bottom end is off from what the 87 should have. It also seems dull, not smooth on top. Hey if it works for you that's awesome, but if you want something like a U87 it seems off.
thanks
hmm now that's impressive...
I am selling a wa87 for 350 dlls in mint condition if interested. Cheers.
How can anyone take this review seriously? Look how your room is treated mate. You can't review microphones unless you are recording and listening in a decent room that is treated properly.
Woolly top end..flabby bass eeeewww yuck!
