  • In this UNSPONSORED video I share with you a brief test drive of the current generation FL5 Honda Civic Type R. As a MK7 Golf GTI Clubsport S owner, you can't ignore the Type R as it was the FK2 gen car the GTI took the front wheel drive Nordschleife lap record from and the FK8 took the record back and this FL5 holds the current record today.
    Like the Clubsport S, it's held it very high esteem for its dynamics by the motoring press but unlike the GTI, the FK8 and this FL5 version to a degree do shout a bid loudly about their performance. I belieive dynamics should not be the be all and end all for a hot hatch, it needs to do a lot of things very well. In this video which was filmed in less than half an hour, I try and decide if it's a better all rounder hot hatch than a GTI.
    This video can be divided into the following sections;

      The high price is possibly because they don't want to sell too many because of the affect on their WLTP CO2/km, it also has 10% (9.X%) import tariff because it's not made in Europe unlike the older ones. I understand that most of the production allocation goes to the Japanese market domestically.

    Didn’t even put the car in R mode. Obviously didn’t do his homework because he is biased towards German brands. Also what about going into individual mode and customising everything to suit your preferences. In Australia it costs 73000 which is about 38000 English pounds.
    Sorry to disappoint you but it has no competition as a driver focused car with a beautiful manual transmission. Over engineered handling and balance. Huge Brembo brakes.

    I am a fan of VW's more mundane offerings and always end up back in one when the daily needs replacing. But for performance I am a JDM man and Id have the Civic over any of the ubiquitous hot golfs - but for the price. Thanks for the review! Would you say the Clubsport S feels just as special?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  12 дней назад +1

      My pleasure Patrick. It’s tricky because the Honda is so different to Clubsport S. The way VW differentiate performance models is different to Honda. They are more subtle and classy and while you can’t choose different colour interiors (like with the Honda) the default trim is designed to offend nobody and with the standard bucket seats which complement the rest of the interior it’s special without being garish. No back seats is always going to make a Golf (in fact any hatch) special. VW could have used non standard cars like Honda did for the ring record but they took the seats out and were brave enough to keep that for the production CSS. GTI ride is pretty plush in comfort mode which means it’s easy to forget you are something special, I suspect Civic is firmer so feels more special but less comfortable. I think most people will see the Civic as a modified car and the Golf as a normal GTI. For me the fact the Golf can blend in and yet be so talented & useable makes it more special. But Civic is still special, just with we could have a wingless car with no red inside and 2 exhaust tips or even black tips, silver wheels would be nice too👍

      I don't see why it needs to be £50k, there is nothing exotic about it anywhere. OK it's had a lot of calibration but it's just a 4 banger turbo making similar output to an EA888. Maybe the dampers are special but those on the Clubsport S which also do comfort and harder are nothing special from Monroe and cost the same as any other VW DCC shock and it's only 3 seconds behind on the 'ring. There are so many mistakes with this car like that, forcing people to have red carpets (and red front seats is another) and that wing and 3 exhausts is just too much. How much of the above really is necessary? The chassis and gearshift which everyone raves about don't need the bolt on bits and certainly not required on the road. It's priced NOT to sell, most likely to ensure Honda meets emissions quotas across its whole line-up. This is basically a PR model, produced just to have it shown in videos.
    In RO it starts at €57450 (which I'm sure is close to other EU countries) and I highly doubt there will be any room for bargaining. At that price it literally competes with BMW 2 series, Golf R, Audi S3, etc. etc. It'll be bought only by collectors or those whose #1 #2 and #3 priorities is getting a factory-made track ready car at that price.
    Shame. A street-focused Type-S with 18" wheels, competent but non-luxury tiers and brakes, SAME ENGINE but a bit detuned to work with RON 95 first, dynamic suspensions, no childish aero (sleeper look) would sell well around €40k but Honda is probably blocked from providing that by emissions quotas so we need to look elsewhere.

      Just trying to be honest and transparent👼. I don’t have to keep advertisers happy like nearly every other review platform so I didn’t have any preconceived ideas of whether I’d like it or not. Overall it was ok but I discovered things I’d not read about that do cloud my opinion of it especially at £50k. The red front/black rear seats I only noticed later and are a bit odd too. But for driving it’s very good

      Conservative buyers like this is why Alfa Romeo dropped both the red and tan interior options on the Giulia, IIRC since 2021 only black is still available. 😔 Not that the Giulia had matching carpets. I think it's unfortunate you can't order your Giulia in traditional Alfa Red over tan interior (yet that is still the highest resale value colour combination for a Ferrari, while on Alfa it's discontinued, go figure?!).

    Biggest problem here is that the majority of the audience are vw fans. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Get it, its a vw channel primarily, Good on yah . Just seems a shame, though, that we dont seem to have the petrol head that can appreciate other car makers anymore and what they do. Instead we get disapproval. Remember life would be boring if everybody and everything was the same. Lets just for once appreciate every car makers take on a sporty hatch i say.

      Didn’t need +R in this context, as I said in video we started in sport then comfort then back to sport for the fun bit on the hill. On the bowl it was sport then comfort to test high speed ride quality - I know not many other reviewers bothers with that but it’s how the car will get driven a lot

    •  11 дней назад

      @volkswizard Well, if you didn't use the drive mode that best shows the power of this engine, why were you complaining about acceleration? .....When you were trying to compare the fl5, to this golf?....Should have put the car's engine in +R mode. In the individual settings, Leave the suspension in comfort ...So you could of at least used all of the engine, in your review RUclipsr .

      @volkswizard  12 дней назад +1

      Yep, tricky one. Yes it’s sweeter to drive than R but R is a better all rounder though Clubsport Mk8 is cheaper than R, closer dynamically to Civic and ultimately it’s a nice, classy Golf and 8.5 with new screen will be even better and around £43k

      Not at all. You can easily spec a golf r to 50k. The Honda is 50k with everything on, barely any options to add. And the engineering you’re getting for the money is closer to a Porsche gt3 than a golf. Not to mention you’re getting something much rarer than it’s rivals. Honda have no desire to sell huge numbers in order to maintain the brand value of type r.

      They only intend to sell 9,600-10,000 units per year globally AFAIK. Which is not very many, but then again the KIA Stinger only sold 25,000 units per year globally and that was a full model range, not just a subvariant of an economy car. Honda has their 8-speed dual clutch which was only designed for low torque or their 10-speed automatic designed for high torque, if they wanted a dual-clutch they would have to design it or buy it from Getrag like Renault [the only dual-clutch for cars Honda have is the 9-speed longitudinal transaxle from the NSX which is no use -- they have a number of motorcycle dual-clutch boxes too, which have a bit of a patchy reputation in the Gold Wing].
      Some of the costs are already amortised with the North American-only Integra Type S which is predominantly the same car. I thought that would have the 10-speed auto optional, but it does not. The TLX Type S [V6 twin-turbo] uses the Honda 10-speed auto though.
