This is the first video in a series that features the new baby gorilla at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. His name is Kayembe, he is the first baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Zoo in their 139-year history. This video features the new baby gorilla and his foster mother Fredrika (or Freddy). Kayembe was born on 10/26/21 and weighed 3 pounds, he was born about 6 weeks premature. (Nneka's anticipated due date was 12/1/21).
These Western Lowland Gorillas are at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The birth mother (Nneka) did not show proper maternal care after giving birth. Luckily, Fredrika, who had 7 infants of her own, stepped in and has taken care of the baby ever since. The baby is bottle fed by zoo staff. He receives formula and orangutan milk. (His name was announced on February 17, 2022)
Kayembe was the first gorilla zoo born in Cleveland.

The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.
