    Hi Chris,
    Thanks for the tip. There's a similar hack that I'm playing around with. So far, it's working out and is very quick once set up with a memory setting. I'm curious to hear suggestions from others who may try this.
    Turn gamma assist on.
    then set the iso to base setting 800 or 4000 (sony a1) - or whatever base isos your camera has.
    Set exposure compensation knob for +1.7.
    Set meter mode to large spot.
    Set camera mode to S for shutter speed priority.
    This will be auto exposure with a set shutter speed and variable aperture. Set your frame rate to 1/50 or 1/60 or for whatever you're working with.
    A variable neutral density filter works with this setup.
    Set a custom button for AEL or auto exposure lock. (I use the AEL button)
    Set focus area to wide.
    To shoot video, move the camera so the spot meter circle is over the subject you want metered. Then lock it in with the AEL custom button. On the bottom right of the screen, a little asterisk star shows up when the AEL is locked.
    Then move the camera to compose and shoot your scene.
    Because the focus area is set for wide, the face and eye focus will work.
    If you want tracking, tap the screen where the subject is. The AEL is still locked.
    When the subject moves, exposure should stay correct until the lighting changes. If it does, try a quick AEL redo.
    By using auto white balance to start, then locking it in, is a quick way that prevents colour shifts from scene to scene. It also adds a little AWB L on the bottom right of the screen. When both the AEL and AWB are working together, it also shows.
    Program the settings into the Memory 1, 2 or 3 banks. They will recall everything except for the 1.7+ exposure compensation.
    Advantages - Exposure stays within the base isos. The 1.7+ compensation is set for all shots - no fumbling around. Spot metering is quick and locked in by using the AEL. White balance can also be locked in. VNDs work fine. Tracking is just a touch away.
    Cheers
    Braden

    So do you normally expose skintones to +1.3 for your phantom luts? I've noticed the phantom lut is for much darker footage than everyone else's luts who say to expose +1.7-+2.

    • @chrisbrockhurst
      @chrisbrockhurst  2 года назад +2

      depends on the look, if you want dark and moody go less, if you want bright but still have the nice colour grade from the Phantom LUTS go +1.7-2... the 'rules' are there to as guidelines

    • @adamdrakestudio
      @adamdrakestudio 2 года назад +3

      In his pdf., he being Joel, he says he doesn’t feel the ETTR is necessary since the release of the A7siii. It’s obviously personal preference but I believe he designed the luts with the idea of people exposing at 0. That’s why he included legacy versions also which are for the exposing to the right i.e. 1.7 stops over

      @chrisbrockhurst  2 года назад +2

    I am planning on doing some filming of an ATV racer at a motocross track and wanted to use Slog 3. Now I am a photographer first, but I was curious if I can set my exposure at plus.1.7 and leave it there and leave it there exposing. If this is the wrong method, please let me know. I just thought it would be easier to keep it at that and turn on auto ISO with the exposure said that +1.7.

    Chris, this is so interesting. I usually use color pallets to expose my videos in SLOG3. The 10 bit color in this video looks amazing. Is HLG2020 the only profile that supports 10 bit color on the A7SIII?
    I am wondering because some of my recent videos were shot in PP Off and I had the Movie Settings set to 200M 4:2:2 10bit. I am hoping they still retain 10 bit color even though it was PP Off.
    I would greatly appreciate if you can give me advice on this as I have exhausted my research at this point haha.

  • @danfarmer_photo

    This is great for interviews. Sometimes, your background will be blown out, or too dark when conditions aren’t great. But, using this method, I can always be sure my subjects faces are exposed well. 👌

    • @eike.zender
      @eike.zender 2 года назад +2

      But what about using zebras? I would say zebras are much more precise, cause you can measure/see the expose in exact those areas, which you want to check - either it's skintones/faces or background ...

  • @mark_rutt
    @mark_rutt 2 года назад

    Honest question, not trying to be sarcastic. But if you are exposing to look with gamma assist, why does it matter at all which metering mode you are using, if you aren’t worried about the meter? I assume that you are still trying to get it within some sort of range in the meter, correct? I’m new to this and just started using a SLog3 on an A74 with the phantom luts and was using spot metering on my last shoot with some success. I agree it feels more useful than multi metering. Still trying to figure out that sweet spot to get the scenes all exposed properly which is much harder than I anticipated it to be coming from my photography background. Thanks for your content!

    • @eike.zender
      @eike.zender 2 года назад

      I would say, that the gamma assist gives you just 'an idea' of how it will look in rec 709. You should not rely on this little uncalibrated monitor.

    Slog3 is so confusing to me. Mainly because exposure changes so frequently while shooting outside, or if you move from outside to inside in one shot, how do you even adjust that on the fly? It seems like slog3 is good for fairly static shots or something. I’m 100% positive I’m doing something wrong though. Slog3 just hasn’t clicked in my brain yet.

    • @chrisbrockhurst

      Use zebras to monitor your exposure correctly, it’s entirely manual and not an automatic feature. When you go from inside to outside you compensate with an ND filter or Aperture

    The day Sony introduces a system that implements ai method of tracking subject and the zebra levels and linking that with exposing footage with aperature and iso (with aperature being prioritized and iso being the last thing being touched on iso) is the day we will all be able to run and gun shoot vlog style videos on auto exclusively, because manuel will be completely obsolete. Also we need a setting which allows auto iso to only be changed between two iso values, such as the base iso, rather than the current limit set iso range with minimum iso and maximum iso. We should be able to set the camera on auto and let it chose between only for example, base iso of 800 and base iso of 2500 or base iso of 640 and base iso fo 12800. WHY?! is it currently only locked behind the slog 3 cine ei setting that also locks auto white balance option.

    The best way to expose for S-Log3 is to have a monitor with waveform (or a camera that has it ;) ) and not use histogram or metering a spot thats linked to your focus. Clicking around and checking several points in a scene for exposures (because maybe you want to check or not expose on what you focus on) is not accurate at all and takes way to much time.
