  • So, what's the secret to the Antoine Dupont Inside Line? It's not uncommon for players to run cheat lines on the inside of the ball, in fact most players will do so at some point, but not like Dupont!
    This video looks at Toulouse v Munster and Toulouse v ASM Clermont Auvergne in the Heineken Champions Cup, and France v Wales, France v Italy, and France v England in the Six Nations. Each example demonstrates that his success isn't down to guess work. He's like a chess player, carefully analysing his actions!
    I've tried my best to pronounce French words as best I can, hopefully that comes across ok?!

    So, what do you think of the Dupont inside line? Will it become more and more difficult for him?

    • @jean-pascalesparceil9008
      @jean-pascalesparceil9008 3 года назад +2

      He will be always closely watched, but that may create opportunities for outside support or oponents may get penalties or even yellow cards it they tackle him whithout the ball.

      @BTBDech 3 года назад +1

      Cancoriet immediate defense is good for the first seconds; the Welsh tactic to keep someone on him seems also good for afterwards, but I think the number 9 should be the one to follow Dupont, as Dupont's acceleration is quite something and a second row would not keep up, imho.

    Great video as always Geraint... There's a video about the contact coach I think, in which he analyses a try where Ali Price man marks a player when there's a lineout... and France does a movement to get than man out of his position and then play an inside ball for the wing to the place Price was...
    I believe that the next time France or Toulouse play against a team that tries to do this kind of man marking they could do a wrap around with either Kolbe as 15 or Dulin and then play it to the inside winger on a flat line and see if they can get a line break. So basically the answer would be asking much more questions to the defense until they collapse lol.

      Thanks for taking a look, Maria! Really pleased you enjoyed it. I agree that future strategies will possibly involve bluffs and double bluffs! No doubt that both Toulouse and France are looking at it already!

      Yes I was in a bad spot with the French team too, I love our national XV since being a kid and it was a tough long time, now I can't wait for the next game of le XV de France, we have a team we love and are proud of!! As for Dupont, as you say he's so intelligent, mixed with amazing strength. Defences are reading him better but still doesn't stop him from scoring tries like the one against Munster. Like Geraint Davies says here, you'd need to be in between the ball carrier and him to stop these inside line runs to be a threat...and good luck to any defender for doing this all the time!!!

      @@GeraintDaviesGDD Faf is great in his style but in term of running threat, Dupont is two or three class above Faf.
      As I like to say, put Faf or A.Smith at 10, centre or wing and you would probably barely notice either of them (ok perhaps not Faf only because of his haircut 😁).
      Put Dupont in those positions and he would probably still be world class and perhaps even better than at 9 in some positions (I actually firmly believe this guy would be even better at centre than at 9)
      To me, Dupont is more like a super Horan or BOD playing at 9 than a truly world class scrummie in the usual qualities you associate to a SH (passing, speed of ejecting the ball from the ruck, box kicking)

    • @GeraintDaviesGDD
      @GeraintDaviesGDD  3 года назад +2

      Cutting a short line is something that all scrum halves do, but it takes an ability to read the game to know when to shoot & when not to, how close to get, when to sprint into action etc. Dupont nails reading the game!

  • @rugbydan761
    @rugbydan761 3 года назад +1

    Aaron Smith always worked so hard in a similar supporting fashion, running optimistic lines often (that said, it was easy to be optimistic with the backline he was working with!). Don't think Smith had the same magic offloading game though.

    • @GeraintDaviesGDD
      @GeraintDaviesGDD  3 года назад

      Yeah very much so. I did a video looking at Aaron Smiths support lines during the World Cup. I do think Dupont reads things better though & positions himself differently in the line!

    • @financialliberty2381
      @financialliberty2381 3 года назад +2

      @@GeraintDaviesGDD there is another major difference, it's that Dupont is much harder to get tackled and is much faster than Aaron is or ever was.
      The running threat he presents to defense is at an entirely different level to any current scrummie and actually to 99% of any back.
