2.05 Smith and 4 other players offside Penalty SA where the cross kick was made from. 3 points to SA
sorry eight players offside
Yeah, that's not how the laws work. @@edthebumblingfool
If you read the rules properly it is.Defenders have to comply so do attackers you dont get a free pass on attack if you gain an unfair advantage. Its just been very poorly referred for many years. after the second kick everybody infront of the kicker shouldnt advance until being put onside, Im surprised that somebody posting a Rugby video doesnt know this.@@GeraintDaviesGDD
Laws not rules. I'm sorry that the laws & their application don't match with your view. Always good to debate though, all the best👍@@edthebumblingfool
He makes a complicated and pressured position look so simple! Great work with the footage as well!
Totally agree, he knows his role so well he's minutes ahead of his opposition on every play!
Damn good brake down, you really went into detail. 👍
Love this! The detail that you go into for the box kick and the pass is the best I’ve seen. Your channel is the best!
That’s really kind of you, thank you. Hope it helps you when you watch the game next 👍🏻
Very interesting, Geraint. Some concise analysis in the key areas. I have enjoyed your reply to comments too, I agree it would be interesting to see Smith vs other 9s in similar context. I think I fall on the ‘onside’ team regarding the cheat lines - very smart play. Keep them coming.
Thanks, Alex. Yeah I think a comparison video would be good. Definitely on side, very cute play!
Great piece of analysis, with very clear explanation and handy infographic tools! Keep up the great work!
Thank you, that’s very kind of you to say. 👍🏻
Awesome video Geraint. Love the level of detail and clarity provided within this 👍🏼
Thanks, Stuart. Hopefully something useful for players, coaches and supporters at all levels of the game!
Again spot on. Pitty we don't live next door to each other, I would enjoy a conversation with you 'cause I look at the same things you do. I have considered this player to be the world best nr.9 for a long time, wasit inly for his perfect technic. Dupont is not there yet I think but he will get there.
Well I do live webinars every month where we talk about the game as part of my Patreon! So you can always join in if you fancy!
Great analysis. Love the graphics.
Thank you! @CoachPaint is an incredible software and really helps to tell the story!
Great job Geraint. I’m glad we were able to to view this is in the US.
Thanks, Daniel. It took a little while for World Rugby to let it be published, fingers crossed it gets enough views to prevent them from taking it down again!
@@GeraintDaviesGDD All the leagues that allow fans to repurpose and redistribute their content via social media platforms thrive (e.g. NBA, NHL) AND those that don't are withering away (MLB) esp. among younger people. If World Rugby, and all the various leagues in NH & SH were generous, instead of restrictive, the game would grow faster beyond those that grew up with it. I'm a perfect example of someone who found the game late in life (Age 48 in 2012, though I did watch RWC 1995 Live from the US) They should be ENABLING people like yourself and @squidgerugby. I think at some point, leagues will even allow access to their live feeds and fan-directors will be able to broadcast their own versions live.
BTW I'm also @HeadhunterSully on twitter, if you hadn't put that together.
@@Headhunter_212 Yeah it's very frustrating, but fingers crossed it'll work itself out for me as it has done for others! It seems to make perfect sense to promote rather than take down!
Ah had! I hadn't made that connection, thank you for pointing that out, and indeed thank you for your continues support!
Brilliant analysis & illustration. An exemplar.😀
Thanks, Terry that's very good of you to comment! I honestly think he's the best example of a scrum half in world rugby! Nails all the key aspects of the game!
good stuff about game management and keeping in control.
Glad you liked it, thanks for taking a look!
Aaron Smith Best of The Best number 9 in the World 👌🏽👍🏽👊🏽🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿
I think so, it’s a close competition with Dupont though!
Smith's been doing it year in year out. International level and local. Records broken and the French haven't yet played South Africa or New Zealand 🤔
@@GeraintDaviesGDD Dupont? Never heard of her
absolutely top class g awsome attention to detail
Thanks, Rick much appreciated 👍🏻
Excellent, eye for detail and analysis. SUBSCRIBED 29/09/2023, hope more people see your channel.
That’s very kind of you, thank you!

Really enjoyed this video. Would be interesting to see some detail behind how this is “coached” without just hiding behind “putting it in a game”.
Thanks, Neil. Glad you liked it! I think you raise a good point. It needs context to really make those skills come to life. Perhaps a future video!
I love his little chest line ahead of the ball. Very clever! Not sure whether that would make him offside from the cross field kick though, he’s always in front of the ball until he receives the pass?
He's so good at anticipating the where the ball is going isn't he? I don't think he's offside to be honest, although I can see that he's in front when the ball is kicked. Do you think he gets put onside when Sevu Reece receives?
Geraint Davies Rugby Coaching & Analysis Throws his pass and straight away is on the move and no intention of going back towards his own line. Puts him in a great position after the line break. You could definitely argue that he is offside as he’s in front of the kicker and also makes no attempt to hold his ground or retreat. He definitely gains an advantage from being in front. Should he retreat or is he allowed to advance as he’s nowhere near the ball? Personally I’m not sure if he is offside but I’d definitely feel hard done by if I was him and got penalised for it. Be very interested to know other people’s thoughts on the clip?
Yeah he's fully committed to going forwards after, which is a really positive behaviour. He's in front of Mo'unga but has not impact on the game. He's also put on side by Sevu Reece. I'd definitely be interested in other thoughts too!
@@theoknight1017 original chaser which was Sevu Reece was behind the kicker. He eventually caught the ball and was well onside and legally makes Aaron Smith onside since Sevu caught the kick. 😂 Mate are you alright? Rules are rules bloke
Excellent video!
Thanks, Tobias! It was a really enjoyable video to make, and great to drill down into the finer details!
You’ll also find some others on my twitter channel @daviesgdd 👍🏻
this is so good
Well made and detailed video, would be good to see some side by side with other nines to see how much he stands out. Does Ben Young’s run “cheat lines” much? Should he?!
Thank you, Callum! I like that idea, it would be really interesting to compare a range of international 9's (or even players in different positions?) to see how what they do compares? Ben Young's would be a perfect comparison! Maybe someone like Dupont too?
My Top 5 Scrum Halves of *ALL* Time:
1. George Gregan 🇦🇺
2. Aaron Smith 🇳🇿
3. Augustin Pichot 🇦🇷
4. Joost Van der Westhuizen 🇿🇦
5. Gareth Edwards 🏴
Great list 👍🏻

Very good job.
Thank you 🙏 glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
👏👏👏 Class
Thank you, Rory!
This is unreal.
Thank you! He’s such a class player, a real joy to watch!
Yes, the best 9 ever.
Best player ever.
He’s got to be right up there!
the run at 2.05 is 100% offside if he gets involved in any play it should be a penalty. regardless if he is back onside at the time he has been offside to put himself in this position.
Frank Lomani🇫🇯 should learn from this guy
See the vid is a year old. Boks are current World Champs...yea we lost to NZ on opening game...
But Aaron was shut by England...our number 9 got us running against Wales & England to subsequently take the Webb Ellis Trophy
So the text under your video reads "World's best 9?"...
I say nah...Faf de Klerk IS World's Best 9.
Enjoy the Rugby Championship if you can watch it from the Northern Hemisphere 👍🏿
Faf is certainly a contender for the title of worlds best 9 for sure.
Loving the rugby championship so far 👍🏻
Saffas can't help themselves....
@@louissmith6300 Gotta love a bit of rivalry!
@@GeraintDaviesGDD absolutely...
Love the accent! 😂
I’ll take compliments where I can get them 😂
@@GeraintDaviesGDD Nah great analysis too mate. I’m shifting to playing 9 from outside backs and wants to learn about playing 9 more
@@avalsirithanawat1772 Ah that's really cool. Hope the move of position goes well and this video helps a little!
@@GeraintDaviesGDD thanks!!
There is an obvious and embarrassing typo in the title! Just replace the question mark with an exclamation mark and normality will be restored. 😎
It’s a fair point!
Conner Murry box kick
That would be very interesting to look at!
1:57 very offside
It's open play, he's not influencing play, so while any player in front of the ball is 'offside' there's no infringement there.
He ran over beside the ref, who didn't seem to think so.
