Dear Scott-I had a very bad case of the flu last week. When the eruption first started, my sisters were visiting in Hilo, so I became interested. So, this weekend while I was recuperating, I binge watched Scott and Apau Hawaii Tours video blog. I absolutely loved the personal touch and a kindred curious soul. I think I would be doing the same careful watching of this new Earth forming. I hope to come enjoy one of your tours when this is all over with and things come back to the new normal. Stay safe, and thank you very much!

Run dude, with that levy overflow coming towards you., man your freaking me out getting to close to all this, at the same time I want so see more.
But I also want to send my deepest love and prayers to all the residents that have lost their homes, businesses and everything thing they own, my heart goes out to each and everyone one of them, I saw a video of the mayor he looked defeated and broken this was so devastating to watch I found myself in tears, it’s all just heartbreaking. Be safe Scott. - Kirstie

How this beautiful area has been decimated, from incredible landscaping, to desolate moonscape. It's really sad, but awe inspiring too, I am completely addicted to watching every day. And I wake up at a crazy time, after staying up till almost 5:00 am (Hawaii is 6 hours behind me in time on the East coast of Canada) so I can see what's happening during your night, too. You're a great virtual tour guide, and a public service, too. Thank you again.

Thank you again for putting this stuff up for all to see. Be careful of that levy bank. There is substantial cracking at the base of it, with material emerging. They often fail from the base like that, rather than when they are over-topped. One little earthquake there and much of that river could be headed your way at 30mph or worse.

I did hear the tephra hitting that roof once the wind started blowing it over there.
By the way, I've been listening to these videos since May 20th, and I'm absolutely hooked. I sometimes wondered if you were okay, because you'd had some pretty long days back a few weeks ago. I started listening to the actual volcano back on the 19th of May, and some of the videos from Honolulu Civil Beat had me keeping vigil for days and praying for everyone. The nuns at Holy Transfiguration Women's Monastery in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania have been praying for you all as well. It's just amazing that there's new land over there that's bigger now than Manhattan.
    Looking forward to hearing more.

This really the first video that I've seen that has captured even a fraction of what must be the incredible sound emitted by that vent. Also: You noted how bright it was...the auto bright on your cam must really darken it. It must be almost white-hot! That's some hot lava! Thanks for your bravery and great videography. So valuable in contrast to all of the worthless, third-hand video, and computer-voice ripoff channels and their tripe that almost makes the signal-to-noise ratio on this topic impossible to overcome now on RUclips!
Stay safe...Best Wishes from East O'ahu!

Good insight from the USGS though, think I've probably learnt more about volcanoes in the past month watching and listening to your videos than I did at school. I can understand the USGS people being a bit reluctant about going in certain areas they are unsure of being able to get out of. They often take chances as it is in and around volcanoes and there is a history in the USGS of lives lost from scientists in seemingly safe situations that never made it out. That certainly happened at Mt St Helens's where the last picture of David Johnston, from the USGS was of him sitting outside his camper on a sunny day while he monitored Mt St Helen's 13 hours before the eruption. Although he was one of the scientists that convinced the Forestry service to close the park he certainly though he was safe where he was camped. His last words transmitted back to the USGS base were "Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!" and then he was swept by the lateral blast form the mountain. Of course, the mountain was not expected to blast out laterally and so its assumed he expected to watch a vertical eruption. No one can ever foretell what an eruption will do or what will change suddenly and no matter what you think a volcano will do it will do as it will. They never found Johnstons body although some 13 years later the remains of his trailer were discovered so it goes to show you that what I am sure are instances in any USGS scientists mind when going into the area of an active eruption. (and yes something you should take care to heed too). I look at just how many things have changed at Kilauea since this phase of activity has happened and how just the lava consistency and flow of have changed since the initial slow moving 'old lava' that one could seemingly out walk (did not even have to walk fast) to now a much faster running newer lava. Although it seems like Kilauea's fissure eruptions and any fissures return to activity has warning signs please keep safe and remember that while up to now the fissures have always had warning signs, it only takes one to decided to roar to life with no warning for someone to be injured. Whats really hard to tell for me now, as the cone/rampart builds up higher around fissure 8 is whether the fountain is not as high as it was or if the cone around the fountain is higher and so makes it hard to really determine how high the fountain is as you can only really measure the height of what is showing above the cone

I have a feeling why the lava eruption seems to have reduced is that it has been building up a cone around the eruption making it look like it has reduced in eruptive power .

Thanks for the video tour. Aside from the opening days of eruption, mainland US news rarely has any updates, probably because there are no fatalities yet. A few days ago USGS estimated the #8 lava effusion rate between 6-9 million cubic meters (200-300 million cubic feet) per day. Assuming the lava out of #8 Leilani is what used to be in (the now empty) Halema‘uma‘u and Pu'u o'o craters, back--of-the-envelope number crunching comes to #8 has a lava source for about 30 days at current effusion rates. Of course such estimates have long lists of caveats which is why USGS staff shy away from making them: #8 could cap itself at anytime or an earthquake pinch off the lava supply or likewise the lava source could be different.

    • @l7e3o0

Rob D the cave in has put pressure on fissure 8... I believe... and the more the cladera caves in the bigger the show at fissure 8. Not to mention those earthquakes at mona loa and what looks like undersea vents off the coast. And from previous events these can last for some time.

To get a better understanding of what this river of lava is doing downstream, USGS posted a 37 second video of a flyover just north of what was Kapoho Bay. Titled "Kīlauea Volcano - Ocean Entry and Laze" it shows what appears to be the hand of Madam Pele reaching out to the ocean. (Metaphor) The remaining buildings are all adjacent the 1960 lava flow. The flow from fissure 8 is currently consuming what remains of the tide pools just to the south. No words!

Awesome Scott. No 8 is really firing up today. I noticed that there is still red lava visible on the fissure next to no 8 right at the top. That lava river is still running very fast.
