How fashion helps us express who we are -- and what we stand for | Kaustav Dey

  • No one thinks twice about a woman wearing blue jeans in New York City -- but when Nobel laureate Malala wears them, it's a political act. Around the globe, individuality can be a crime, and clothing can be a form of protest. In a talk about the power of what we wear, Kaustav Dey examines how fashion gives us a nonverbal language of dissent and encourages us to embrace our authentic selves.

    The essence of this talk is freedom. Fashion is just one way to express that freedom. We in the west must appreciate it more. And in the east and south they must embrace it.

    • @kylewit924
      @kylewit924 6 лет назад +2

      Except freedom is an empty word. It signifies nothing real. There are positive and negative freedoms. There are moral freedoms and constitutional freedoms and on and on. But the real implications behind the "east and the south" embracing "freedom" like you say is a trap, and that trap is opening up markets to western investors and breaking down tariffs and protections of labor in third world countries. Its what they call promoting a "free market" but its nothing more than a term that signifies what benefits a small number of extremely wealthy investors in western countries.

    • @jonson11122
      @jonson11122 6 лет назад +1

      @Kyle Wit - No, freedom is very definite and real. Read the "four freedoms" speech by Franklin Roosevelt. Also in the talk you can hear the lack of freedom to dress as you want without being harassed or even murdered (as heard in the talk). Or for example freedom to learn and the fact of attempted murder of Malala fighting for girls rights for education.
      Freedom is very real especially when you experience tyranny personally, then you know that freedom is something real and definite.
      I agree that word "freedom" can be misused as you warned in the case of economy.
      But I was referring to freedom as it can defined as "the power to determine action without restraint". Of course that means not to hurt other human beings.

    “I discovered the power of fashion. Fashion can communicate the differences to the world for us. With this simple act of truth I realised that differences stop to be our shame and they became our expressions, expressions of a very unique identity. We should express ourselves wearing what we want.” Love your speech and your story 💚 thanks for sharing.

    When i was young, I always had my belief of fashion’s power for self expression, self esteem and change(in this video, society prejudice and pressure). And now i major in fashion, accidently saw this video, sooooo glad to meet someone thinking and giving a speech about that subject. All i wanna talk to you is just thanks and i can say my word more clearly to others who didnt understand me🙂

    As a 17 year old girl I feel the same, I always wear button ups, longer pants, and I don’t wear shorts, I don’t even own them, I’ve never had friends and I was never able to fit in, but I enjoy and embrace the ability to match, and be called stylish without having to worry about people staring at my bottom, I know that at least people want to talk to me for my personality instead of a horrible desire to peruse and interact with people solely to gain something. What an inspiring story to know that people who don’t fit that horrid box of squareness can always find solace in the way they present themselves to the world, and not solely for others enjoyment, but uniquely for their own.

      Exactly couldn't agree more
      It gets on my goat that there are places in the world where you can legally be murdered just for choosing to be free. No one has the right to tell anyone how they can dress, what gives them the civil right to do that
      It's the content of character that matters

    Fashion is art art is advertisement unless you cover it up inadvertently a statement can be madr we can't control. Color is vibration vibration is motion and sometimes motion can be blind. I believe this man is blessed I am amazed at how inside and out he knows his stuff. It runs even deeper then the undesired stains of a color and inspiration for better day through by view. This is about heart and human ethics. Though it is true people are limited to there regons and laws. I believe we all shine brightly and fashion is more about how we execute actions and arts within our cultures. Things wouldn't matter if nothing could stand out. Lol this is going nowhere I'm done

      Why can't it be both though? I work with women in my styling who are broken or have a very low view of themselves for a variety of reasons, whether its illness, the world telling them they don't have value, and other personal struggles. When you try on something that feels like you at your best, and you feel your confidence suddenly lifting, it is a wonderful thing to watch too. There is nothing shallow or wrong with using clothes to express who you are to the world, and it takes a great deal of bravery for so many when you have so many messages telling you to be or act a certain way. Fashion can be meaningful, and when you give thought to your pieces and appreciate them as a form of creativity, it can be special too. Not for other people, but for yourself. I know when I got sick I became very disillusioned with my body, I didn't feel good about myself. Then fashion became this wonderful tool of self expression, and I saw that it had transformative power too. It could be as simple as feeling at ease in jeans, sneakers, a tee and a beautifully tailored blazer, accessorised in your own unique way. Or a beautiful long maxi dress paired with vintage jewellery and pieces that have sentimental value. We express our thoughts and feelings through every visual medium imaginable (from art to food), and logically fashion should be reclaimed in that way too. :)

      @@samanthamay6714 Do you think that the weather and where you live and how the area around you is like makes you feel like wearing clothes that match with it or contrast with the clolours of the sky or the types of byildings you see. If so do you think clothing should be made to fit a certain atmosphere that can also bring a positive change in how you feel when you wear an outfit.

      I like to think of my clothes as an outer representation of my inner personality- something I don't let people see often as I'm incredibly shy. Wearing clothes that I like, and in turn "wearing" my personality, definitely helps me not feel as anxious. Fashion can indeed be used to pretend we're something we're not, but it can also be used to let people know who we are. It's up to us to choose.

      i think that fashion is only suggesting you to consider wearing something different, something that you havent tried before. And this is awesome)) to be honest, there are really a few people in the world who really wear at least 20% of fashion trends. In every season there are at least couple of trends that fit in your own style, so fashion isnt about being like everyone else, its about trying something new, unexpected and unusual
