It looks beautiful!! 😍 It was the slow motion of Brianna saving the post from falling! 😂👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼 In terms of the roof on the new pergola, you could attach corrugated roofing sheets. They have clear and colored, aluminum and thick plastic options - would keep you sealed from rain and elements. You would want to elevate one side of the roofing sheets to create a small slope for water to run off into the yard. Again, such a great job! We bolted ours into concrete using an impact drill + hex-shaped drill bit + Tapcon concrete screws (3/8” or 5/16” x 3inch). Socket wrench could work but the impact drill was wayyyy faster lol
We used the clear corrugated panels for our second summer. We had a waterproof cover that we could slide to block the sun to the left in the morning and the right in the evening. We had to discard it the next year because we didn't remove it at the end of the season. The weight of accumulated rain & snow stressed the fabric. Eventually there were holes that drenched the summer gear we were hoping to protect. Had we been more responsible & proactive, I'm sure that waterproof cover that included ties for all four poles would've lasted several seasons.
Now, pergolas have louvered roofs, which is an excellent feature.
Also, consider getting caps for the base of your posts. They come in two halves that wrap around all four sides that compose the perimeter of your pole. Measure carefully to assure you get the proper size. This was very important for our application because we have a wooden pergola. If your hardware is galvanized, this may not be as much of a concern with a metal pergola.
Regarding your unwanted grass area to the side, shoveling it up and then placing the large cardboard as you suggested, with the weed covering on top, should be a better deterrent for eliminating weeds.

I live the pergola. I want one in my yard. Most outdoor furniture is waterproof and if you have covers things should be well, I wouldn’t get a waterproof cover because think of when you need to naturally clean the patio. I’m a little over a year into my home, 2023 is my focus for my yard. I’ll get things setup in the winter so I can get in folks books because business were scheduling 3-8 weeks out for various things.
You are just one of my favorites on RUclips. You are amazing and fearless. What you have done mostly alone to your home is just incredible 😮😯😍❣️ You young ladies are just doing it. Friends like yours are a blessing! I’m a single homeowner diy-er and my girlfriends are helping me turn my house into a home! You ladies did a great job! I think adding a larger outdoor area rug will help tie-in the two spaces. The black trim around the door and windows will help to break up neutral color of your home and tie-in the pergola. Smothering out the grass is a lot easier than digging up the sod and it works. Also, if water just sits on top of the pergola it will cause the metal to rust. I can’t wait to see what you do next!!

Awesome job! My daughter and I just put up the backyard discovery Somerville pergola and it was a struggle! As far as the area on the side where you want to kill the grass, look up sheet mulching. You can use the leftover boxes and use the landscape fabric for something else.

To secure the pergola to the concrete I suggest wedge anchors. Measure the holes on the base of the pergola to see what size you need. Looking at the video I would guess 1/4”, maybe 3/8” diameter. You probably want them at least 3” long. You’ll need a masonry bit or two. Check the anchor packaging for the recommended bit size. Make sure to keep the washer and nut installed before you hammer them in. Also, vacuum out the hole before inserting the anchors. If you want more strength you can add a little epoxy. If they stick out too much for the base trim you can cut them down. Place a piece of plywood or something next to the pole to try and prevent damaging it while hammering or cutting. Hope this helps.

If you really want something that prevents the rain from coming through, I would suggest adding the waterproof drop cloth that you can slide open and close. Only an idea.
