When the stabbing occurred in 93, Seles was already sitting at eight singles grand slams after just a few short years on the professional tour; just three grand slams away from tying Steffi (who had been on the tour since the early '80s). No one in the open era has won as fast and as much as Seles [in the open era]. Because of that fact, it truly is no surprise why so many people consider Seles as someone who could have been the greatest women's tennis player the world has ever seen. One thing is definitely for certain, we were all robbed of what could have become between the two throughout the years. Possibly even a rivalry somewhat similar to Navratilova and Evert.
I doubt there would have be any serious rivalry once Seles achieved adulthood, 21. Graf would have been 25, and in the last 4 years of her career, she retired at 29. I would expect Seles to achieve another 30 Grand slams during the height of her career. Venus Williams wouldn't be a significant force, she's 11 years younger, until Seles turned 30 by which time she would likely have retired or had children. Likely Seles total count of Grand slams would be 40+.
Interestingly, despite the obvious consequences of the stabbing, Graf is the player whom Seles faced the most in grand slam matches, resulting to a 6-4 lead for Graf, tied 3-3 in finals.
She would have easily become the greatest ever with 25+ Slams. She was fearless, ruthless, whereas Navratilova, Graf and even Serena would often choke when facing real challenges

For sure, Seles would have had more Slams. Such a terrible traumatic experience. Imagine thinking about someone doing it again while you are trying to play or having a flashback. Monica was so accurate and strong with those two-handed shots. Thanks for the video. I think of Seles a lot when I see what I think is extraordinary (and much needed and appreciated) security at all ATP and WTA matches. I'm glad to see that every time a player sits down there is more than one set of eyes monitoring what is going on in back of them and I assume all directions are tightly monitored. Really bad things can happen in life and something would've been different in the rankings if this didn't happen.
Think, Seles had won more than half of the grand slam tournaments she had played when the attack happened. 8 out of 14 (losing one final). From early 1991 to spring 1993, her grand slam match record was 55-1. 3 Australian opens in a row (winning on first attempt) 3 French opens in a row, 2 US opens in a row, 3 YECs in a row. All in less than 6 full years on the tour.
And the German gov gave the guy no time. Despite admitting he wanted to "hurt" Seles, Parche sensationally avoided any jail time as he was handed a two-year suspended sentence.
Graf would win half of the GS she did if not for the stabbing , and would spent maybe 200 weeks at no. 1. I will never consider her a GOAT. She can wipe Seles shoes, not mentioning Serena and Navratilova. At 19 Seles already had 8 GS finals. Every person who is not Graf's fanatic or in denial knows what would have happened if there was no stabbing and her father did not die. Basically Monica had 8 GS finals won by 19. Graf was also only 23 when she won Wimbledon 1992. So, even as a teenager, Graf had 6 GS singles titles to her name as well. To think that Steffi would have not won another GS tournament in her career is really delusional and extreme. I think only these 6 GS victories during Seles' absence should be viewed with a question mark. 1993 - FO 1993 - W 1993 - USO 1994 - AO 1995 - FO 1995 - W No! Had the incident not messed her up psychologically, she could have returned by Wimbledon 1993 and could have been up to form by the US Open 1993.
One more thing: When Seles returned the WTA protected her ranking and points from before the stabbing and that is how she was co-ranked #1 with Graf in 1995 and 1996, accumulating another 64 weeks at #1. I think that was deserved, obviously, so I do not understand the criticizm that the WTA players always get for voting against the idea of listing Seles at #1 in 1993-1995 (her return)...
