The first Snow White DVD will forever be my favorite. The magic mirror was your guide. He told you what everything was, he would call out for you if you went idle, every menu was hand crafted specifically for this DVD, and it also had a disc 2 that added to the experience. It was a really high quality menu for what it was!

One other factor is probably the multiple formats they have to do nowadays. Back then, they only had to create one master, the DVD one. Now, they have DVDs, Blu-rays, 4K Blu-rays and even 3D Blu-rays (which Warner Bros. still releases). DVDs and Blu-rays menus are always different because one is dynamic and coded in Java and the other one is static and requires multiple pages. 4K Blu-rays and 3D Blu-rays don't have the same special features (most times they don't have any) which means they also have to redo at least a little bit of coding on those menus, making them a little bit different. Plus, Warner Brothers actually uses HDR on their menus, which means there's a little tweaking needed there also.
What I mean by all that is that their consumer base is not only smaller, they're divided between multiple formats for which they have to create different menus (mainly DVDs and Blu-rays, though, as the other ones are slight tweaks of the Blu-ray). They have to do at least twice the work for like half the sales, and it's just not worth it. That's why WB has that weird template (though their template could have been a whole lot better. Universal also has a very obvious and repetitive template, but they mostly use it with clip shows running in the background so it still feels a little more alive), that and the fact that if people are willing to pay for digital copies of the films with no fluff (no cover art, no disc art, almost no special features and no menus), they won't mind the menus so much. It's sad, but people don't care and will buy those films anyway.

  • @DennisTamayo
    @DennisTamayo 4 года назад +44

The good thing about the DVD menus is that they're in 16:9 widescreen, the bad thing about the DVD menus is that the main menu is static as seen on the current Warner Bros. DVD & Blu-ray releases. I wish the Warner Bros. DVD & Blu-ray menus should be animated again next year, except the sub menus.

Two things I definitely miss about DVDs
    1) Fun games you can play on DVD like Timon and Pumbaa’s Virtual Safari
    2) Surprisingly, the part where the THX logo appears right before the movie (or in some cases, before the menu themselves!)
As much as I hated the THX logo as a kid, it still contains as much nostalgia as going through Timon and Pumbaa’s Virtual Safari.

My theory for why DVDs were better back then is that they had to convince people to buy them rather than VHS, but now DVDs basically have nothing on them. A rare exception to this is some of the new DreamWorks movies that have the same extras on the Blu-Ray.
I think DreamWorks put way to much effort into their early DVD menus.

the quality of the video was really good. I enjoyed hearing what you had to say about the DVD menus and I thought your ideas on how to improve them were quite interesting. my only complaint about the video is how you did the scene selection for each part of the video. while I can tell there was a lot of effort put into that, and it really shows, I think it would've been better if it was a one time thing. that way it didn't take up too much time in the video. but overall, I really enjoyed this! can't wait for the next video.

  • @dykodesigns

I think one of the reasons the menu’s became more basic is that menu’s annoy some users of DVD’s. My dad in particlair doesn’t appreciate them, he just wants the movie to start playing right away. I like nicely designed menu’s but also feel that the design shouldn’t get in the way of the function. The creative menu’s lend them selves well to movies for kids, but maybe not so much older viewers who just want to have the movie play with as a little fuss as possible. When I was younger I appreciated them more then as an adult. Nowerdays I prefer the blue ray style overlay menu’s that are just a basic menu at the bottom of the screen that you can activate whilst the movie is playing. It is functional and unobtrusive (but not very creative).

I can see what you mean. The DVD menus used to be so brilliant, back when DVDs were popular. But now that Blu-rays and streaming have become a thing, the DVD menus have become...pretty dull, for some DVDs. But I still treasure DVDs, for being an improvement over VHSes, also having brilliant menus back in the day. And over in the UK, they have the audio in a high tone, some of them.
By the way, while this is not related to DVDs, I respect your opinion on Cars 2. I personally love that movie, despite the different theme it has to the first Cars.

Honestly, Warner Home Video dvds from the 90s/ early 2000s were fairly good.
They didn't really rely on moving clips and scenes from the movie, rather than the movie's poster.
They did compensate for this with amazing special features, like Production Notes and trailers. I forgive them for those.

In my opinion, I think Universal's stock DVD menus are worse than Warner Bros.'s stock DVD menus. Because with Warner Bros., they at least put the text "play movie", "scene selection", "set up" etc. on the menu options. With Universal's stock DVD menus, they're just icons, and you have to guess which icon does what if you're not familiar with them. These menus are just the 16:9 versions of the movie posters and the options are just icons, and text is nowhere to be seen. Not even the logo of the movie most of the times. The lack of text on the Universal DVD menus makes them feel empty and eerie, so that they're a perfect example of liminal space.

Warner Bros. actually used Helvetica for their menus, not Arial. Arial is a more rounded design than Helvetica, with softer, fuller curves, and more open counters. The best difference between the two fonts is the number 1.

7:58 Or, if it's another clipshow menu, it would start with Thanos with the Gauntlet and the stones, and the stones show the previous movies. PS: That's just my opinion/suggestion.

I think the worst dvd menu I saw was for Elvis, I mean it’s a biopic about Elvis fucking Presley and they only grabbed a still image of a scene from the movie with royalty free clapping and screaming sound effect, they didn’t even put an Elvis song for the menu

Although the DVD menu of "Here Comes The Boom" is just a jump cut clipshow, i find some charm on it (maybe because of the background music)

Scene selections are fun to look at tbh, Sony ones are my least favourite, one reason is cos they’re all the same
