- Staring Joe Greene with Franco Harris and Harvey Martin
Mean Joe Greene and the Pittsburgh Steelers temporarily adopt a nine-year-old boy and they learn a valuable lesson from each other. Featured is a dream sequence where the kid plays quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This show is based on the award-winning 1979 Coca-Cola commercial where Mean Joe trades his jersey in exchange for a Coke from a kid. The commercial was so successful it was run all over the world and different versions were eventually filmed for different sports using the top athletes of the day.
Henry Thomas, who played the boy, also played Elliott in Steven Spielberg's E.T. the following year. Shot on location in Dallas at Texas Stadium. A local semi-pro team was used to fill out the roster.

I'm happy to be the 75th person to like this video. THANK YOU for sharing!
I remember the commercial. NEVER KNEW THERE WAS A MOVIE!😀😃😄😊
WOW, Never seen this. What a great movie. Shows how great Joe Green was and is..
This is the movie based on the Mean Joe Green commercial that people have been looking for! Yea. Enjoy!👍
Thanks for posting this. I have been looking for this for years and was hoping to find it on DVD somewhere. Go Steelers
You’re welcome! 👍🏻
This is SO early '80s cheesy. I love it! LOL
I was thinking late 70s, guess I was wrong😔
Is there away to get a DVD of this?
I loved the Tim Conway parody of this commercial. My 9 year-old self thought it was the funniest thing ever.
I DIDN’T EVEN NOTICE THAT “THE STEELER & THE PITTSBURGH KID” CAME FROM AN NBC SERIES CALLED “PROJECT PEACOCK”.
EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A SHORT-LIVED SERIES, “ PITTSBURGH KID” IS A FINE CONTINUATION OF THE AWARD WINNING COKE AD. HENRY THOMAS DID THE ONLY SENSIBLE THING…HE RETURNED THE FOOTBALL JERSEY BACK TO JOE GREENE.
SMART MOVE, HENRY! Kenneth Huang 11/15/23.
I saw this on tv as a kid!
BEFORE HENRY THOMAS GOT FAMOUS AS “ ELLIOTT”. FROM “ ET”, HE BECAME “ THE PITTSBURGH KID” WHEN HE WAS ONLY 10 YEARS OLD.
I KNEW THAT THIS SHORT FILM WOULD LEAD TO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS FOR HIM.
Kenneth Huang 2/8/24.
PS: IF THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS WANT TO WIN ANOTHER SUPER BOWL, THEY MUST TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THIS SHORT MOVIE.
They may even learn a lesson or two from Joe Greene’s message to his teammates before an important game.
I’ve waited SOOOO long to see this!

In my head Steven Spielberg watched this twice to scout Elliott for ET
This is wonderful, thank you very much! GO STEELERS!!!
Holy hell… I have been looking for this FOR YEARS!!! Thank you so much for uploading this!
Haha! Glad to finally fulfill your search!
How did I not know this existed????? And that's Elliot from ET???
yup henry thomas
Yess!!!!!!
You guy's are the best, I haven't seen this since it was on NBC 👍
I have been looking for this film for years! Thank you! My mom recorded this on our vcr back in ‘81 and I watched it religiously. Is there any chance you could put this on a dvd for me? I would be happy to pay you for it.
IF YOU THOUGHT THE PITTSBURGH KID WOULD KEEP JOE GREENE’S FOOTBALL JERSEY AFTER GIVING HIM A COKE… THINK AGAIN!
THE STEELER & THE PITTSBURGH KID STARRING HENRY THOMAS ( 1981 ). I’ve always thought how this Coke commercial would turn into a short movie. Now I know:

Archival NFL Films footage from Browns at Steelers, November 16, 1980? The scoreboard doesn't accurately reflect what occurred in the real game. At the 4:15 mark in the fourth quarter, the Steelers had possession of the ball and were first and goal at the 8-yard line. The scoreboard shot was, most likely, recreated.

C'mon, where's the famous Mean Joe belch?
IKR??? 😆
@@mcmillenandwife Can you imagine if Mean Joe Greene had joined Ernie Holmes in pro wrestling? They's win any Tag Titles they wanted
Here I am
@@TeddyBelcher4kultrawide Braaaaaap!

Endless footage of Joe Greene in the film vault, yet the post-production crew couldn't find a snippet where Greene actually assisted on a tackle? Lame!

Another insult. The injured player isn't Greene.
David Berlatzky, you'll never edit in Steel Town again.
😂 Agreed! From the look of it, I doubt the creators knew much about football. Probably the same group of people that work on every NBC afternoon special, throwing it together as fast as they can on a small budget.
Fun to see Joe in this light despite the cheesiness and lie budget feel.

Despite all the continuity errors, it's still fun to watch this hokie, made-for-TV movie, if only to find the flaws. Thanks for taking the time to upload it.
Made for younger kids, so not a lot of factual screenplay.
I noticed "extras" wearing the number of familiar Steelers and the "visitors" lockeroom magically turned into the Steelers' sheds at home.
This must've been an "Entertain the kids on holiday" Special shown during prime time? sort of like a "Charlie Brown & Peanuts" prime time Special on CBS.
Glad to finally watch it, as it's been in my save for later queue for over a year.
Thanks for uploading and sharing
Where’s Drew Barrymore ?
😂 Haha! Wrong movie!
