  • Once in a ‘Blue Moon’ - Auctioneer Oliver Barker brought the hammer down on Alexander Calder’s 25-foot mobile after a heated bidding battle. The gravity-defying work, which hung above the auction room, ultimately sold for $14.4 million and surpassed the high estimate by over $4 million.
The 2024 New York Sales are presented in partnership with Celine.

I find his work so refreshing to my soul. Growing up outside of Hartford I would go with my family there when I first caught sight of his Stegosaurus and even at around 10 I fell in love. Several years ago the piece was in deplorable condition and I had to fight for its restoration. It looks wonderful again.

Honestly, at least it's something you'll be forced to enjoy and not just stick in a safe or a freeport.

    12.2 million. I wouldn't pay a dime over 12.1 million.

The bid is up to $12 million, and they won't go another $200,000? Sheesh.

Is there any research on psychology of best bidding practices? When it was at $11mil and the phone tried to go to $11.1mil before hesitantly going to $11.2mil. If the room bid had jumped to $11.7mil immediately is there any research on the likelihood that the phone bidder would be more likely to drop? Because the bidder in the room could have saved half a million that way. Just curious if anyone has any research on the topic they could point me to.
The witty comment to Simon as he delayed the end of the auction was a nice conclusion.

Breathing. Thrill. It's all about these minutes and the very moment you buy. And as for the actual selling price, well, I personally can predict A LOT like "much higher than higher est", "near the higher est" etc. based on what people search for when they finalize they finally put their eyes on the work sold
