Pink *was* a kid before the war and 6,000 years of isolation on Earth. They showed that the other diamonds would literally send her to her room for long stretches of time as punishment, like a child, to get that point across. She was Yellow and Blue's baby sister and badly wanted their respect until she got to Earth and saw what that would entail. She came up with a harebrained scheme to free her friends and save Earth that spiraled wildly out of control and probably only really came into herself while leading the war effort.
Yeah, that episode with Steven and Connie locked in the tower was...something else. The show gets really dark at times, it's incredible how they handle some serious situations.
I might be mistaken, but Rebecca Sugar stated on one of the books about Steven Universe that Pink wanted White approval only, she really din'd care about Yellow and Blue approval, and is because White was the only one between the Diamonds that made her feel worthless, even that all four of them have the same age, White acted as superior cause on her mind, being playful and joyful about life is the same as being immature.
That seems right. Pink wanted to be an adult and lead her own colony. Leaving Spinel and the garden was putting “childish” things in the past. She wanted to be seen as serious- like Steven at the beginning. The others having her go play or sending her to her room was treating her like a kid. That didn’t give her very much experience in being a leader. She tried though. Harebrained is a very good way to describe it. As she matured during and after the rebellion there was no way to fix the things she destroyed. No way back to the garden.
@@bubblegumrose777 Which I understand why. She really *WASN'T* mature, Blue and Yellow were absolutely right. Even when she did get a colony she clearly thought it was boring and she only went to earth to entertain herself.
Beat me to it. But yeah I totally think there’s a link there. In Hazbin just before the song Lucifer asked to meet Charlie’s “OTHER friends” the emphasis on the “other” made me think of this song. Then I was taken aback when Spinel’s voice just comes out of a character much moments later.
The thing about Pink/Rose is that we learn her backstory in reverse which is something most shows don't do. She is a full complex and interesting character and I don't think most people understand that.
“I don’t know why spinels being like this.” Idk, I feel like if I was left alone for 6,000 years only to find out I was betrayed by the most important person in my world, I’d be acting pretty irrationally too…
I think you've forgotten that Pink has *ALWAYS* been childish. Even when she was Rose, a large piece of that stayed even when she was with Greg. I mean, do you at all remember the stomping temper-tantrum she threw during that Stevonnie episode with Lars on the other planet????? She sounded like a child, acted like a child, and broke things like a child because she didn't get what she wanted. When she *DID* get what she wanted, she was disappointed because it was boring and she only went to earth to entertain herself. She hurt people, she disregarded people, and discarded people... because they were just entertainment and props. She did get better after becoming Rose, but that never fully went away, and we can see that when she wouldn't take Greg seriously for a hot minute. They portray her as a child in this movie because that's what she was, *ESPECIALLY* before she got a colony. Not making her childish/like a child would have been the *HUGEST* retcon in all of history!
Pink’s problem is that we see her redemption arc in reverse. We start off with the recent memory of the redeemed character and slowly peel back thousands of years of awful behaviour. If they’d shown her as a selfish violent child first and later we saw her become a benevolent leader, we’d all think she was a great person who went through a heck of a character development arc.
Let's be completely Fair though some of the things that make people hate her are post Redemption. Even after everyone was corrupted she never confessed her part of it to her surviving friends. She never really acknowledge the power dynamic between her and Pearl and forced Pearl to keep that secret for millennia. And then she brought a kid into the world without making proper preparations so that he would know the kind of life he was inheriting. She's a flawed and really interesting character but she's far from innocent and I would argue that she never completely outgrew her selfishness. You can forgive spinel since they had to destroy the Galaxy warps, but Bismuth is owed all the apologies
It's funny you bring up the song from Hazbin-- the episode actually references Spinel a couple times (Lucifer asks Charlie to introduce him to her "OTHER friends", and the song's style is half a reference to this and half a reference to Friend Like Me from Aladdin), all leading to Mimzy, who has the same voice actor as Spinel.
I believe the reason Other Friends and Hell's Greatest Dad sound so similar to you is because they're both in the genre of electro swing. It's a very particular style (one of my favourites), and I think they just happen to both be using it because it really fits their respective contexts. Maybe there was some inspiration , but I think it's more two teams drawing from the same well than an outright reference.
Yassss it was a fantastic and fun reaction on Patreon, and it’s a blast again here! The songs in this movie are such a bop. Can’t wait to see SUF whenever that comes.
Oh yeah, re: "cartoons don't say the word 'kill'" etc.--This cartoon breaks a lot of those kinds of rules for sure! They referred to straight up killing and death a LOT in classic SU! As early as the fourth episode they ended "Together Breakfast" by saying "it did try to kill us." There are a lot of the more casual uses of "kill" as well ("Lion, you're killin' me!") but they used it in the actual dangerous way plenty of times when they were in real danger. Steven saying "And now I'm gonna die" while floating in space waiting to die. And another time screaming about how they'd just sit there until they both die when Steven was stuck in space in "Bubbled" with Eyeball Ruby. In "So Many Birthdays" there were a lot of mortality-related words used (especially when Steven was rapidly aging), like Pearl saying Gems can still get hurt and die, and Amethyst screaming "Are you trying to kill him faster?" Pearl apologizing for almost getting them killed in "Space Race." Steven referencing "that time you almost let me die!" in "Last One Out of Beach City." Steven being afraid of death in "Future Vision" with all the cutely animated deaths he was imagining, and Garnet going "that'll kill ya faster!" when he tried to make a mayo-laden sandwich. The flashback of Rose Quartz solemnly telling Pearl they'll "be killed" if they lose the war. Steven rehearsing how to tell Connie about his "Jailbreak" adventure and saying "I think they wanna kill me?" The Gems referencing that Peridot had been trying to kill them only a short time ago once she became their ally. Steven telling Bismuth that Gems always try and kill him before he can be friends with them. And of course the horror movies Sadie and Lars like have some "killing" references, as well as Sadie becoming "Sadie Killer" later. Oh dang, sorry, I went on a really nerdy rant.
Pink had a really interesting development in the series (or I guess recession?) due to her story being told in reverse. We initially meet Rose, the person she became after years of change and growth and as the show progressed we got fo learn more about her past and her upbringing. We came to learn how Pink was essentially the bratty little sister of the Diamonds and underwent a lot of abuse and neglect and hence why she wanted change. Wish I could say this is all the baggage she got Also fun fact: Spinels are sometimes used as substitutes for Diamonds in jewelry because of their similar appearance. So it's very fitting how fake Diamond Spinel ends up being taken in by the Diamonds
STEVEN UNIVERSE THE MOVIE !! whew !! It is so delightful to be seein ya react to this, and so sorry for my lack of comments these last few months! life's been especially busy but be assured I never missed a video even if I didn't have the energy to leave a comment, you brighten my day Ever! Never stop being you :)
Gems don't age, so at the time Pink would DEFINITELY have been a child, or at least treated like one by the gems. People act like she was exactly the same person as she was before, but she wasn't; despite the gems thinking they can't change. Pink was a bratty child who was abused by her family; she eventually grew to be a loving wife and mother after being exposed to more experiences and the emotional maturity she learned through Greg. She only matured after going through certain key points in her life: 1) when she accidentally hurt someone because she wasn't controlling her powers (as mentioned in Steven Universe future later) 2) when she learned about humans on Earth and 3) when she met Greg and learned to be a full person
I find it so ironic that when we learn more about her, we keep moving backward in time. I remember how we used to love Rose at the beginning, but now we have mixed thoughts about her life when she was Pink
Posting this as a taster of Patreon works really effectively. I love how often you laugh, cry and talk at the show. That's what reactions are for. I want to see it impact someone the way it did me. Now I'm really considering joining your Patreon.
25:41 we can't even be mad at Rose, because Rose Knew that White and Yellow and Blue will Attack and Rose Protected Spinel from the War that she was on and also is making sense why Rose was like a child Mature, Because Steven was the same, Child Mature, even Lars said to him how did make your self so Mature
That's something I said constantly through the series, how mature Steven was. I absolutely loved it - then naturally, after I've watched the future series...that had to effect him some how haha
We have to remember that Spinel was left on a rock for 6,000 years. Yes her insecurities flaring up so much that she insinuates ill intent in Steven where there isn't any is childish. But she is quite literally a child. A child with extreme trauma.
If that can help, I watched an interview where the author said that spinel's character came from an old toy that she found back or the memory of one that she left behind and that's what we kinda explore in the movie. And as some have reminded in the comments at the time Rose was really child like and my understanding of the situation taking into account the "forgotten toy" aspect of it, Rose didn't intend to leave her but just forgot about that. I think it was right before she was given the Earth to conquer and the battle with the gems and so on. I could be wrong and to me there's so many things irredeemable about Rose's behavior but I think it wasn't intentional...
6:16 funny you mention the similarities to “Hell’s Greatest Dad”, because Spinel’s VA, Sarah Stiles, also voiced Mimzy in Hazbin Hotel! Ironic that she voiced a stellar performance in “Other Friends,” but so many viewers agree that Mimzy ruined the flow of the song in HH lol There’s also some mashups of both songs here on RUclips between Lucifer & Spinel’s parts! And lemme tell you, they are 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
24:33 TW// Mentioning of the topic of Sxxcide There’s a pretty upsetting undertone here-that I’m not sure if it was explicitly confirmed or not-but remember that Spinel still looked like her INITIAL self until she saw the Homeworld broadcast of Era 3. Keep in mind, that broadcast happened at the very beginning of this movie. What I’m getting at, is for Spinel to have changed her appearance so drastically from when she saw that broadcast to when she arrived to Earth, the pain and betrayal she felt from Pink’s actions suggest that she poofed either from stress…or making herself poof, and reforming with her tear streaks. I don’t think it’s even that far fetched of a theory, because grief from betrayal can really destroy people and do irreparable damage sometimes. We can be so startled or heartbroken that we either faint or suffer a heart attack. Spinel’s change here is tantamount to either suffering a heart attack and poofing…or poofing herself from grief.
I'm so disappointed in my youtube recommendations because this video was the first I see from any of your channels, I went so fast to the gravity falls playlist and currently devouring it and planning to go over every playlist 😅
The algorithm HATES my channels haha. Thanks for wanting to watch. I hope you enjoy Gravity Falls! It's one of the first shows I reacted to and I absolutely LOVED it!
Not to completely defend pink but in all honesty pink probably expected to come back soon. But then she experienced earth and her viewpoint of not only gem life but of the empire itself changed as she started and fought the war. Obviously she royally fucked up regardless of her intentions, but once the war started at what point was she to go “oh I should retrieve spinel”
I loved the SU movie 💗 I love SU future as well! But it does touch on some new, kind of intense themes, and I think some people just didn’t connect with it. I personally loved it though!
I would've loved to have brought it to YT - but it took me a year to get it on Patreon, it'd take so much longer to get it on YT :( But the future series will be on RUclips!
22:11 Well she was. Hasn't this been established very early on? Why is that weird. It's not _changing_ anything. This was who she was before the development after seeing earth. We saw her throwing a tantrum when Stevonnie dreamt of her. That's where she originated. The narrative was always backwards. The uncovering of her true character under all the romanticized telling of her tale. She's always been shown in the true memories, as a gem full of wonder and childlike curiosity. This is shown through how Garnet first met her vs what actually happened right before that. Others perception of her - seeing her as being wise and mature - is just that, perception. We can't have multiple facets in our personality?
Pinks selfishness bothered me in the series. As tough as things were on the Homeworld, she let the other Diamonds (her sisters? family?) think she had been murdered to go off to her new life without a backwards glance. Spinel (her playmate? baby sister?) was cruelly abandoned. Pretty dark
Pink/Rose was a horrible being. Everyone says that she didn't mean to leave Spanel in the garden so long, the galaxy warp was broken, but she could've used the legs to save her but didn't.
The Lily Orchard hate video falsely described the songs in the movie as being over dance beats so I was expecting something a lot cooler and more interesting then what we actually got. Can you imagine if they used a hard style drop to represent fusion or something like that?
Oh and about the Future series, brace yourself ! I'm trying not to spoil anything but let's just say that what's explored is really tough but very realistic and makes a lot of sense. I personally got through something similar and I think I'm not over with it just yet, so maybe that's why I liked it very much idk But one thing sure, I think you should watch it entirely and see for yourself what you think about it✨🤍
I hope y'all enjoyed the movie! I'll be getting the Future Series up on my main channel soon (youtube.com/@eversprimetime). But if you're interested in the original series, that is exclusively available on Patreon! patreon.com/soeverdream Thanks for watching 💜

Childish, which a lot of people are when they haven't been exposed to the world.

Steven has definitely said the word kill, multiple times in fact since season 1.

Steven universe future is absolutely worth it.

Sarah Stiles the VA for Spinel also voices Mimzy in Hazbin so I think it is a safe bet to say Lucifer's song is inspired.

Spinels intro song is my favorite.
Rebecca also said that spinels gem turning upside down with a dramatic change was basically gem suicide.
Future is worth it, it does feel different from the rest of the series but it’s more of a Steven arc instead of every other character.
There's a reason Spinel gives you Mimzy vibes. They're the same voice actress =)

After learning about spinel, I would look at the entire series if she was a crystal gem
Pink/Rose was a horrible being. Everyone says that she didn't mean to leave Spanel in the garden so long, the galaxy warp was broken, but she could've used the legs to save her but didn't.
14:39 OMG NOOOOOOOO now I wish that was part of it :(((
I'm still mad about it lol
The Lily Orchard hate video falsely described the songs in the movie as being over dance beats so I was expecting something a lot cooler and more interesting then what we actually got. Can you imagine if they used a hard style drop to represent fusion or something like that?
Future is basically just gallons and gallons of trauma being unpacked
pink wad a very bad person in the beginning and spinel is so sad and has so much trust issues
I'd have trust issues too 🙃
A FUCKING DEPRESSING FACT IS THAT SPINEL WAS SUPPOSED TO DIE, AND BEFORE COMING TO EARTH SHE TRIED TO SHATTER HERSELF GOD FUCKING DAMN IT
She didn't try to shatter herself. She poofed from feeling too extreme emotion, which is rare but can happen to Gems (according to Rebecca Sugar.)
Oh and about the Future series, brace yourself ! I'm trying not to spoil anything but let's just say that what's explored is really tough but very realistic and makes a lot of sense. I personally got through something similar and I think I'm not over with it just yet, so maybe that's why I liked it very much idk
But one thing sure, I think you should watch it entirely and see for yourself what you think about it✨🤍
I’m just sad I can’t watch you react to futrue because I’m not a member and I can’t pay to become one🥲
Future is on @eversprimetime and will be free! It's just that paid membership gets early access! The series will start releasing Aug 28th :)
