    Of course good memories can become sad. When you lose something you loved very much, the memories of it are "bitter sweet." They've been touched by sadness because it's lost and you'll never have it again. She moved away from the only home she's ever known and all her friends are hundreds of miles away. Of course all those memories of what she's lost will be touched by sadness now. But having said that, you can't fully appreciate joy without having experienced sadness. It's all part of the human experience. She's just a little girl so this is her first serious brush with that. Things feel devastating when we're young because we lack experience. A lot of our firsts happen when we're young and to a child those things feel like either the end of the world or a bright, shiny new and wonderful world. The older we grow, the more we experience and the less our emotions get out of our control. All of this mess happened because of the toxic positivity of Joy. Obviously Joy is IN Riley so she's doing it to herself. But At her age, emotions are more apt to get out of control. She feels the sadness but she's pushing it away because she's not accustomed to this level of sadness. She's fighting against it. Mom coming in and asking her to stay "happy for her dad" did NOT help the situation. Mom meant well. It's a great example of how parents try so hard but sometimes they do say or do the wrong thing...especially with their first child. They're only human too, after all. Joy was suppressing Sadness with all her might. She was even stopping the bad dreams. Our brains use dreams to process what happened during the day. We need that. At the end of the day, we need ALL the emotions including sadness. We're not complete people without them and suppressing any of them is not good for anyone. Edit: Mom's lead is sadness because empathy comes from sadness. so mom leads with empathy. Dad's anger is representing his instinct to protect and provide for his family in any way possible, even aggressively.

    My two favorite scenes in this film is the argument between Merida and her mom, because it was acted so well! The entire film is, but it’s such an emotional scene and feels like a very real argument with very legitimate emotional reactions. My other favorite is when Merida defends her mom against her father. That choice was a no brainer for her but still difficult nonetheless. To draw a weapon against her own father, who she also loves. She would have died protecting her mother. Should mention, I wanted to be an animator. So I’m a bit of an animation nerd. Also the Witch is Mrs Weasley from Harry Potter and Robbie Coltrain (Haggrid) plays another character. I love this movie. You should always have the right to choose your own destiny. And at that age, I’d probably not be ready for marriage either! The end also makes me cry when Elenor’s eyes change.

    Reilly asking her parents not to be angry for her being unhappy breaks my heart. Bing bong can’t even live on through her memories as he made the ultimate sacrifice to be forgotten to save her. The girl who played Boo in Monsters Inc also played Reilly as a toddler. They had enough sound clips lefter over from MI to use for IO. The girl (now an adult) has a video on YT explaining the story. She otherwise isn’t in the entertainment business but one of her parents worked for Disney and they needed a young kid, which is how she became the voice. They followed her around with a microphone for hours lol. So Reilly’s tantrum, was a legit tantrum from a little girl.

    10:56 “how to change a good memory into sadness?” - my answer is; by having another point of view of the situation. I think that if one of these emotions were to represent me in my head, it would be sadness because even if the moment is happy, I always think of something that hurt me or made me sad and unhappy.

    I moved when I returned to CP. I think the transition went smoothly because my family and I went to the new house to see how the work was progressing. So when it was time to actually move, I was already a little used to it. What was hard was getting into my new school. I had no friends initially, but it remained complicated for me to integrate.

    For me, this is how it happens in the brain. Of course, Pixar personified things so that we understand. Personally, the first time I saw this film, I said to myself "waaaaah...but it's so logical actually!" because I guess they had to do scientific research to make this film in order to stay consistent with our reality.

    Two things I especially love about this movie: 1. It illustrates how depression is about much more than simply feeling "sad" all the time. It's feeling like parts of yourself are starting to go missing, along with your ability to feel the full range of feelings. Not amnesia, but a sort of incompleteness, an emptiness that starts to take over. 2. It illustrates how Sadness has value all on its own (not just as a way of "appreciating joy" or whatever). It shows that sadness is a crucial part of processing bad experiences, and then moving past them. And also that sadness is a big part of how we signal others that we need help - and what allows us to feel bad for other people in an empathetic way.

      It's also interesting how joy is the only one with 2 colors, the bright yellow, the blue hair and the blue eyes. I think it's a way to show, that there is no joy without sadness.

    You mention about mom & dad's emotion crew, and how they reflect the outer human. There was a whole discourse around this (including why Riley has mixed-gender emotions, but I'm not going into that here: since Disney have doubled down on the 'phobery, I don't think that idea's got legs and I'm sure not going to project credit where it's not deserved). Instead I want to put out a thought I had: whilst Riley is the protagonist, the story is told from the POV of Joy. She is the Narrator, so what we see in Mom & Dad's minds is Joy's understanding of what was (probably) going on in there. The characters' appearance is reflected on what Joy imagines that crew to look like. And the five work in a way that she is familiar with. So perhaps as she tells this story of how Riley went through a bout of mental unwellness, and how she understands it may have been for the people around her. Also, cf the end credit clips, same idea.

    As someone who has dealt with depression most of my life, no, being sad is not depression. When Riley is running away from home and the console turns black, THAT is a much better representation of depression. Emotional states as a whole become screwy, and negative emotions such as sadness and anger which are easier to slip into become the norm. For me it led to a long period of feeling perpetually tense and guilty all the time. Sadness in and of itself is not the culprit, it's a symptom to be sure. But believe me, nothing feels worse than suffering from depression and having someone try to empathize by saying they feel sad sometimes too. It's a whole other world when that sadness converts from hours, to days, to weeks, to years. I've been on a better track to mental health for the past few months now and it has been night and day since I began getting some medical assistance for it. But I cannot express just how awful it made me feel when people tried to empathize and would say that they feel sad sometimes too and that you just have to get over it. It really doesn't work that way, and all it ever did was make me feel even worse for the fact something was wrong with me and I couldn't just overcome it.

    • @Kryptomi
      @Kryptomi 18 дней назад

      Also consider this: the purpose of negative emotions in our day-to-day life is mainly to alert us of negative beliefs or definitions we are holding onto, for example, the belief that “I am not good enough”. Emotions do not exist in a vacuum, so the only reason you have emotions is because there is a belief system generating the emotion.
