    I just test drove this car a couple of days ago. I drove around for an hour, on small and large city streets, and on highways at 80-120 kph. I averaged 3,9l/100km. The car felt nice and peppy, and the ergonomics were pretty good. Definitely very nice.

      @@autogefuehl You hit the nail on the head. Toyota infotainment is still lacking behind Android Auto and other manufacturers. Fortunately, we have an Android option now. I am very surprised by the interior quality and seat. It is better than even Auris 2018 or Camry pre-2018. The 3-cylinder sound is more pleasant than the older one and has a better torque curve. The safety sense 2 with laser cruise control and pedestrian detection as standard is striking for Yaris price.

      the question is, does it make sense to buy the hybrid over the normal one considering its a significant price jump. You would have to save 1000L of fuel to make it worth considering and the car probably wont even be driven enough to make it worth it with current gas prices

      Not everyone has 35 - 55 minutes to watch a review, so there is value in the shorter ones. I love the thoroughness of Thomas' reviews and the cars I'm interested in more, I watch Autogefuhl, for the ones I just want to have an idea about, I watch Carwow or something similar. Great for details geeks, could be a bit too long for the "bingewatchers".
      But all in all, these are great detailed reviews for sure.
      Thomas has catapulted himself in my ranks of car reviewers when he reviewed the Golf GTI (German guy reviewing a German car) and he said "capacitive buttons are bollocks" Big thumbs up for being honest and speaking on behalf of the people.

    Additional interesting info:
    - The B mode does recuperate more at very low speeds and could thus be more efficient in this case, however at normal speeds, it does turn on the engine to use engine brake for long downhill moments, e.g. then used for running down a mountain while the battery is already full, overall less efficient. So usually just leave it in D mode.
    - PWR mode does tune the accelerator pedal whereas ECO mode tunes it down.
    - Toyota engineers say that wether Nickel Metal Hydride or Lithium Ion battery is used does not depend on which tech is best, they are switching back and forth depending on available raw material, concise vehicle, use case and also battery generation. They are using this tech here right now whereas the new generation Nickel Metal Hydride battery is also being developed.
    - The Toyota Yaris offers central airbag between driver and co-driver as first vehicle in this segment, great job for safety!

    • @harmdegraaf5579
      @harmdegraaf5579 4 года назад +3

      B mode does less recuperation because it engages engine braking.

    • @moi_noirceur
      @moi_noirceur 4 года назад +6

      The principle of B mode is mainly to allow you to switch the continuous transmission to a "lower gear" as in manual, to prevent heat building in brakes for long downhills.

    • @qwasrfg
      @qwasrfg 3 года назад +7

      The rationale behind the B mode should be properly understood.
      A hybrid vehicle has the advantage of having the possibility of using electromagnetic braking to slow the car because of the electric motors. Because of this possibility, the conventional mechanical brakes could be downsized somehow to reduce cost. Each time the electromagnetic braking is used, electrical energy is recuperated and sent to the drive battery to charge it. The problem is that during long braking situations (like when going downhill on a long road), the recuperated electrical energy from the main driving motor (MG2) is so much that the drive battery, being relatively small in terms of capacity, gets fully charged very quickly. Once the drive battery is fully charged, it can no longer accept any further electrical current from the MG2 and thus, according to Lenz's law, no back emf is developed to create the braking effect to slow down the car. Accordingly, the car's onboard computer then is forced to use the conventional mechanical friction brakes. However, since these are slightly undersized, they will become very quickly overworked. That's where the idea of using the conventional engine braking effect comes in. And Toyota does it in a brillant way with its Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) technology.
      In the B mode, the engine computer, using power electronics, sends the recuperated electrical energy from MG2 to MG1 (the electrical motor that reverses the car and spin the internal combustion engine (ICE) into operation whenever it is required), instead of into the drive battery. In this way, a current can flow, and according to Lenz's law, the electromagnetic braking effect is still obtained. However, in addition to the electromagnetic braking being obtained from MG2, since the ICE is now being spinned by MG1, additional braking effect is being derived when the ICE is doing work by air compression in the cylinders. The computer is not instructing the fuel injectors to send fuel to the cylinders and therefore the ICE will never start in this mode and will thus be working only as a compressor. In this way, the kinetic energy of the car is being converted into heat in the ICE, heat which is ultimately rejected to the atmosplere through the cooling radiator.

    • @SOMEONE-ME
      @SOMEONE-ME Год назад +2

      Yes, this is quite often (about always actually) wrongly described for Toyota cars. B mode is really for mountains to help to keep your brakes safe and not overcharge battery. It actually recuperates less energy, but brakes more with petrol engine. There is a Polish video where guy measured how much energy was recuperated for both modes during same downhill drive and for B mode it was less (not much but measurable and repeatable). Most importantly car behaves differently as in B mode it breaks so heavily (but with petrol engine) that sometimes (less hill) he had to actually press acceleration. In D mode you break less (but recuperate more), but you need to press break pedal way more and use actual discs (so they can get hot).

    I've owned the design model for 1.5 years. Toyota hybrids are perfect if you want to look at EV but don't have the infrastructure to support .e.g live in block of flats so unable to charge. This model is better in every way to the previous generations , handling is good , ride comfort good (mine has smaller wheels) , noise suppression ok but again better then previous generations. Over the summer months I average 75 mpg and I've had journeys over 100 mpg. However in winter this does fall back a lot seeing 55 to 65 mpg. Rear legroom seems smaller than previous gen and paint seems to chip really easy , I have blue metallic and I note Toyota has withdrawn this colour...maybe issue with paint? Radar cruise control...never had it before and I initially wished they offered a model that was cheaper without all the tech kit, however I'm converted and wouldn't be without it now. I've owned premium German brand cars and honestly they are no better you are just paying for the badge. I'd give this car a solid 8/10. And most importantly - no issues at all in 1.5 years.

    The most Japanese car ”made in France ” has improved dramatically since I first encountered it almost 20 years ago. Imagine how great it would be as a full electric. Maybe Toyota will come to it in another 20 years, when the regulation benefits of the early hybrid adoption have worn out...
    Speaking of great electric city cars, when should we expect the Honda e review ? It would really be useful to have your approach on this revolutionary / divisive car.
    Thanks again for great work !

      Rumour has it that Toyota we’re going to present their fully electric range of vehicles at the Tokyo Olympics. Obviously because of COVID-19 that’s no longer possible but they were scheduled for full launch in 2023 using their newly developed solid state batteries which allow a range of 600 plus miles between charges.

    • @izo77
      @izo77 4 года назад

      @@andydavis7254 Well, the Olympics were at first supposed to present Japan as a hydrogen nation. That seems to be ”on ice”. Now Toyota teases solid state batteries, knowing well that the technology won’t be exploitable another 5-8 years. In the meantime, they clame that they want too ”ease” costumers slowly into electrification via mass-produced hybrids, then plug ins, before full electrification. This looks a bit much like a desperate PR stunt, after realising that their ”wait and see strategy” on electrification was 5 years too late. The Coreans are leading, the Americans are pretending they do, the Germans have taken the turn, and the Chinese will eventually dominante. Remember how Japanese electronics went from pioneering to irrelevant ? Wait and see the next episode...

    Did anyone notice how other drivers were trying to take a peep at the Yaris whilst overtaking it? Such is the striking design of it. Its actually quite refreshing how relaxed and refined the Yaris is at speed. Seems noise suppression has been greatly improved. From a practicality perspective, Yaris Cross will obviously be a better choice for me though.

    I have great respect for Toyota for having a hybrid lineup. The major weak point of Toyotas is interior design, though. It’s always too gray, black, plasticky. Although this Yaris has improved when looking at the lines, it’s again the materials that hold it back. Nice to finally see CarPlay and Android Auto. Great review.
