I find a difference between the types of seats is the headrest. The type on your test car is very uncomfortable because it is too close to your head. The S-sport seat has the integrated headrest which is more comfortable for me. The S5 coupe that was tested by Horst had the better headrest.

I spent today driving a 2018 S5 convertible around Hong Kong. What’s most amazing about this car is how good it is in every situation.
I started off in heavy traffic on HK island. It was as easy to drive as a Golf: it was quiet with the hood up and shifting gears in comfort mode between 1.5 and 2k rpm. When I got out on the highway heading north I got the first taste of its performance accelerating away from a toll booth: this thing can go!
Stopped for a coffee and decided to lower the roof and first the first time tried sports mode: the first thing I noticed is how much better it sounds in sport and with the top down you can really hear the turbo spool up and it just punches you down the road.
Then on the way back to the city it started raining heavily: crawling along in traffic I was able to raise the hood in a few seconds and it was like being back in a hard top coupe again. The four wheel drive means even when it’s wet and greasy you can punch the throttle and it just hooks up and goes.
The weather brightened up so lowered the top again, paired the iPhone and just cruised along with the top down and Spotify through the excellent speakers. Followed a Ferrari 458 for a bit on Shek O road and had some fun trying to keep up (of course he had more power but on a tight twisty road the Quattro and always available torque means it wasn’t completely embarrassed either). Just a great looking, versatile, fast and fun car that works in every situation.

Great Review! I've owned Audi's since 2013, I bought a 2013 A5 Cabriolet with S-Line, it was the only convertible able to fit two sets of golf clubs, luggage, and still put the roof down, fast forward a few years & I traded up to a 2015 RS5 Cabriolet, (push start and you can't help but giggle, that V8 is beautiful!) I also have a 2018 SQ5. (same engine as the S5 Cabriolet) I'm a bit torn on the new look, the hood is a bit to busy for my taste, I guess I like the simplicity of the older model 5's.

In my opinion the new S5/A5 is pure understatement with meanwhile classic design elements from the predecessor !! The exhaust sound is addicting and I am still looking forward to the new RS5/RS4 generation 😍

Thank you Thomas for your phenomenal review of the Audi S5 Cabriolet. I think I watched it three times. I recently purchased a loaded 2018 Audi S5 Cabriolet, Mythos Black, with Magma Red interior. I was originally going to get a 2018 BMW M4 Convertible or a MB AMG C63 Cabriolet but thanks to your help, and multiple test drives of all three, I realized that the latter two were NOT good daily commuters but ideally a fun third car to own. And the Audi deliver a level of luxury that the BMW certainly did NOT have and the MB almost had but in the end lacked.
The Audi S5 however, is a dream car and my first Audi I might add. As you mentioned in your video Audi literally thought of everything to make driving this vehicle thoroughly enjoyable. The cock pit blows the MB and BMW experience away, and I prefer all of the added adaptive driver options over the MB and BMW. I'm also pleasantly surprised with how powerful the car is and how fun it is to drive fast. Like you said, it corners like a dream. One thing you may not have mentioned is just how comfortable the S5 seats are. I'm six food three, and I found these seats much more relaxing to sit in then both the MB and BMW. Now in my 3 month of owning the car, I often surprised with how smoothly this car accelerates well into speeds that are considered a felony.
I have recommended your reviews to all my friends. Thanks for your help and all you've done for car enthusiasts like myself!!

This car really is perfect. It's one of those cars that someone can buy and not have any buyer remorse. Convertible? 4 seats? Usable trunk? Foldable backseats? Great sounding exhaust? Intuitive MMI? Adaptive Cruise Control? Lane Keep Assist? All checked! The only two things that I would change are: (1) replace the grill with the RS5 one -- is this possible? (2) replace the Tiptronic transmission with S-Tronic Dual Clutch. Or even better just give us an RS5 Convertible!
Great review! I also agree that the Mercedes C43 amg cabrio is a great machine but the Audi S5 styling to me is more refined and better proportioned, and yet it has a more masculine or "aggressive" look than the Mercedes. This is the one for me! Thanks again Thomas for your great reviews!!👍

Would be great if you would put more effort into an explanation of back sits space as well as boot space with a roof up and down - what exactly you can pack there, how many luggage, what size etc. Some people are planning to rent a convertible for holiday - for example, to travel between few cities in Spain - and such information can be very useful as to how to arrange luggage and still be able to enjoy open roof. Your Mercedes C-class Convertible was much more helpful in that case. You are doing a great job overall. Thank you.

Thomas! Check out GAD's video on the C400 tune too 500hp. These cars' segment 3.0 turbo bi, single hot vee like the audi are so tuneable!, that they're making power like previous vesion AMG's and so forth!

This is a superb video. The shots were fantastic. I don't think we in UK get a choice of seats in the S5 - it's the Supersport only. I wanted an S5 for the sporty/comfort but not sure how comfy the Supersports will be. Anyway, this new design is beautiful, even if it is slightly Mondeo-ish.

well the summary is quite easy: Forget it as an adult (maybe drop off at train station or smth maximum.)

Love the in-depth reviews, had a few quick questions for you Thomas! I've been comparing the Audi A5 and the Mercedes C-class Cabriolets, and was wondering about the wind/comfort levels between the two models, as Mercedes has the long wind deflector above the windshield as well as the one in the back- basically did you notice any difference as the driver from a wind/comfort level? In addition, it looks like the wind deflector in the Audi wouldn't be usable if you have anyone in the back, is that correct? And last question (I promise), what happens to the wind deflector in the Audi if you put the top up?

Both for sure great cars, the E-Class is maybe a little bit more comfortable, but overall it feels bulky in comparison to the C-Class and does not really offer much more room. I'd go with the C to have the less bulky car and to be able to move around more freely

Would the only option be through Audi Exclusive? Maybe with full Alcantara Frequenz? I'm hoping to get the TT RS Coupe (the Roadster won't be available in SA). Would you recommend going for the full Alcantara steering wheel and possibly something like full Alcantara Frequenz for the seats through Audi Exclusive? Hoping I can organise to spec my car at the factory :)

Too bad the flimsy plastic shift paddles do not match the rest of the interior quality - maybe to keep a 'respect distance' to sister Porsche? There the PDK paddles are always nice aluminium pieces. Opportunity for some retrofit manufacturing, I think. Furthermore, the info screen should be retractable like in the A3.
Surprising that you even found this car superior to even a Bentley Continental GT! In all aspects, no less. Quite a statement...
I hope Audi makes a rs5 (coupe, not sportback) and sell them in North America. I can think s5 is not in the same class as c63s or m4m3.
Servus Thomas, the idea is that leather is more durable on the outsides where you are rubbing against frequently.
Here is an idea for your website ! I think you should start a petition against manufacturors because they do not offer no option where there is no leather used.

Lovely video, thanks Thomas. Im considering buying a s5 sportback, but im not sure with the seats. I love roadtrips, i usually drive 700-800km per day on a trip. I love s-sports seats though, but i concern about its comfortness during long journey. Could you recommend what kind of seats should i choose in terms of sportyness and comfort, normal/sports/S-sport seat? Thank you very much!

Autogefühl this place is not quite famous so it is not very crowded, but there are a lot of people at the ocean
So many huge hotels and they were all empty. Looked like in summer it's gonna be hell lot of tourists in those HUGE hotel complexes
Autogefühl the hotels are almost full, but the tourists only go to the ocean, some of them don't even know that there is also a town in sancti petri. So in summer if you want to go to the town and eat at the restaurant, you will find a few tourists and the rest will be people who live in sancti petri will be there
Is the frameless mirror sharp? And when will you review the golf r facelift?

Hi Thomas thank you the great review. I test drove this car as well as BMW 440i and M4 yesterday. Loved all. BMW inside quality seemed better but Audi drive more stable. Now am really confused which one to get. M4 I was thinking manual. The rest not available in the US only automatic. do u prefer this car over 440 and M4? I watched your BMW Cab review but it's the older version not 440

Thank you for the quick reply. I'm not much of a Mercedes fan especially in Los Angeles. For some reason I like the Quattro drive more than RWD and own a Q5 TDI no which drives amazing. Did u review the 435 or 440 or M4 cab as well? I wish the S5 came in hardtop cab!

Thank you Thomas. I am deciding between S5 Cab vs C-Class C43 convertible. Did you say that there was a version with a touch-screen? I did not think that Audi favoured touch-screen because it is distracting to reach for the screen. Also, I am not pleased that Audi put the Tiptronic torque converter in the S versions, I much prefer the solid feel of the S-tronic dual clutch in my TT. Maybe I will try the A5 cabrio. Did you find the Tiptronic to be a solid feel or do you also prefer S-tronic.

Autogefühl your C class convertible review was one of my favorites because you has so many variants and colours to show. you did a similar review with the new TT and TTS, many trims. your review is why I bought the TT S-line.

this is my wife's favourite car, end of story. she prefers the hardtop though. this goes for $140k aud / $100k euro, which is alot of money from any angle. its interesting the price difference between germany and australia, $68k euro in germany for s5, though australia pays $100k euro in australia. price gouging at its finest.
omfg! Tax reasons?
yeah mate, they have whats called 'luxury car tax' (LCT) here in kangaroo land, plus the local dealer would be adding a nice little premium on top as well. for your records, the ridiculous tax kicks in at aud $64132 for regular cars, and aud $75526 for fuel efficient cars. so in the case of the S5 you would be looking at about $25k just in LCT! its insane. i think their (the government's) view is, if you have the money for a $140k car you arent going to cry about a $25k tax hit.
And Tesla is cheap than because its all electric?
well, by cheap, we are still talking aud $270k for a new model s p100d. the new model 3 im excited about, its not a rocket like the the other high end tesla's, but it still goes great, and they are saying it will land here for aud $50k after taxes and delivery fees etc. so yes, this avoids the LCT of the higher priced tesla models. i will need to take it for a drive before making a decision on purchase.
Thomas is the BMW4 way more silent than the A4? N which of the two shakes less, as convertibles usually shake.

Thomas, usually you are very stylish. What happened? I can only imagine you are wearing a hoodie beneath your sport coat because you were in a rush to get out the door this morning and grabbed the first thing you could find. Or perhaps most of your clothes are in the laundry. I don't know. But if you get cold driving in a convertible in March, and if you still want to look fashionable, then I would suggest wearing a down gilet, slim fit of course, under your sport coat, paired with a warm scarf.
This redesign has not yet grown on me. The first generation is such a sexy vehicle, in coupe or convertible form. Is there a major shift toward a vegan lifestyle in Europe that I have not heard about? I understand being a vegan in your personal life, but is it necessary to throw subtle jabs at carmakers for offering leather seating surfaces? Why not be objective when reporting, then, off camera, write letters to these automakers expressing your concerns?
Thomas always recommends the fake leather seats, as in his opinion they have a better feel and he doesn't sweat that much in them as in real leather seats.
Being objective means that you tell customers that they support animal cruelty by buying leather products. That's what I call transparency instead of just telling bullshit nonsense like "finest leather seats" without uncovering that this is chemically processed ripped of skin of a cow. You wont find any other car channel that has the balls to name those problems in the car industry without being afraid the manufacturers wont give them cars anymore.

First to the practical reasons:
1. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat
2. they are cold in winter
3. on cloth or microfibre, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling
4. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like granny’s old sofa
5. if you want leather look, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review) So Tesla shows that the discussion wether you need animal skin is basically done.
Still, now to the environmental reasons:
1. There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body.
2. The way the cows are held are catastrophic (see videos below)
3. Even if a cow gets killed for meat first, you give additional money to an industry that relies on murder, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals.
4. Does it really matter for which cause a mammal, that is 99 % genetically identical with us, gets killed? Would you say a cow only got slaughtered for the meat in the leg and thus it got slaughtered for the meat in the neck anyway? That doesn’t make sense.
5. So to the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/
6. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". An the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy.
