This was the most hyped Halloween movie and it lived up to all my expectations. Ik a lot of people bash it but compared to some of the old Halloween movies, it’s a masterpiece.

    • @JoKiR90

I’m with you. I love this movie. The whole evil dies tonight thing is so over exaggerated and the reason why so many people claim to hate it. They act like 95% of the movie is everyone running around screaming “evil does tonight!” but it’s literally one scene 😂
The entire Halloween series is chock full of bad scenes and/or bad dialogue- not sure why Kills had all of these imaginary standards to live up to. John Carpenter recently said this is his favorite next to the original, and every time I see a “which was better” poll on here, if HK is featured; it always wins 😂

    • @Sebastian04223

@@JoKiR90 I agree I think most people who hated it are not even horror fans. They expect a deep ground breaking story in a movie about one masked killer with a knife. It’s too much in my opinion. Sure somethings could’ve been done better, But for the most part it was fine. I think if these same people went and saw the previous Halloween movies, they wouldn’t hate it as much

    • @dommoore6180

Not really a big fan of the common "it's better than old sequel x" argument. And that's even debatable, even Halloween 5 and Resurrection had a clear premise and storyline, Kills couldn't even do that.
I agree that people over analyse Halloween sequels and act like it needed to be the writing equivalent of the Mona Lisa, but then it's like, well you're willing to give Kills a break but you're propping Kills up by bashing other sequels that at the absolute least had an actual storyline?
Like Halloween 6 is widely discussed as being terrible. But it has a proper storyline, a messy one but one that is definitely there. It's got characters who act like human beings. It's got that, on top of solid production design, some great suspense sequences, Michael kills, good music and cinematography. It does the things that Kills does well, maybe not as well in some areas but more well in others. Yet it also has better writing than Kills, and that's a movie that has some serious narrative issues.
Yet people go out of their way to act in a pretty bad faith way towards 6, discounting it entirely with just the sentence "incest cult" or whatever and totally ignoring all it does well whilst hyper fixating on stuff they don't like often from an alternate version of the film. And Kills has it's defenders out here saying "at least it's not the old sequels".
So are the people who don't like Kills mostly "not even horror fans"? Why is it fair game to trample older Halloweens to prop up the newer ones but people who don't like the newer ones, which have just as many issues as the rest of the series, aren't even horror fans?
I think Halloween fans should just spend less time hating the series and more time focusing on what they like, so we can all have a good time rather than constantly dealing with hate being thrown towards what we love. At the end of the day, Halloween is a mainstream example of an unpopular genre when you look big picture. Outside of the classics and well marketed hype machines (like Halloween 2018), slashers will always get hate. Pitting the series against itself and playing into fan division isn't the best response imo yet it's been the main response for a long time now.

@@Sebastian04223 Fine. The gist was that Kills has issues just like the rest of the series and defending it with 'at least it's not one of the old bad ones' is weak and unnecessarily combative.

I agree with what J says about the movie not flowing. It feels to me like a badly done puzzle with misshapen pieces jammed together at the last minute! Saying that though, I do love some of the scenes, especially the flashbacks to 1978 and the part where Michael is chasing Lindsay. It had so much more potential though. They could have done more with Tommy and Lindsay’s relationship. I agree that it was corny as hell too with “Evil Dies Tonight!” Lol.

I love Kills. The dialog isn’t great
and “Evil dies tonight” is annoying as hell, and Hall just wasn’t a good Tommy for the most part, but I love everything else about the movie. I personally enjoy the Tivoli. If you’re going to focus on mob mentality or at least have it as an aspect in a film like this, there should be a moment like that to show what can happen when that goes too far. I know a lot of people who don’t like that part because they felt targeted as this was all during COVID irl, and people felt like the movie was taking shots at them on one side or the other, but they forget, this was all shot and done before Rona was hitting.
For me it’s got great kills, some great shots, and my favorite ending of the entire franchise. My ranking of the DGG trilogy, which I know will be controversial, goes: Kills, Ends, 2018. 2018 is great but it does feel very much like a somewhat typical Halloween sequel, mainly for some of the negatives you touched on in your last review. I like when shit gets a little weird and off the rails personally haha

One of my problems with the film is they make all this fuss about Hawkins ( getting him back from the dead after 2018) and give him an interesting arc - but just do nothing with it, it fizzles out. I thought maybe they might do something with it in Ends but it's even worse - it's like they forgot their own story. Ditto with the ending - oooh, that's interesting, I wonder what they;ll do with that... nothing.
I do enjoy the movie because of how much Myers is involved and I love seeing him in this kind of mode, but the dialogue is incredibly bad, it's almost like some of the actors don't even understand what they're saying, like it's a first take lol
My last pet peeve with this film - and this trilogy - is how they've blanked all the other movies apart from the original but in HKills everyone acts like Michael Myers has been causing chaos in Haddonfield for years on a constant basis. It seems to want to aknowledge Halloween 2 (1981) and this movie might have worked more if that film was cannon with 2018 but since they knocked it off, I just can't understand the hysteria everyone seems to be in - especially after H2018 when Dave says " he only killed a few people, its not a big deal". Ahhg, just winds me up lol
I was excited for Green to come back after 2018 because I wanted consistency and ended up with three movies that could have been made by three different writers and directors. Just feels like a lost opportunity to make something epic.
I sound like I'm downright hating on these movies when I really do enjoy them but they could have been really something special.

To quote Salieri's co-worker in Amadeus, this movie had "Too many notes."
It had Zero focus when all it needed was One -- Michael F'ing Myers.
It was about deceiving Laurie Strode, the sheriff's guilt, the town's trauma and anger, the new characters and their issues, the old characters and their issues, Allyson's issues, all with interspersed scenes of The Main Character in the past and present.
DGG needed to stop trying to please everyone and stay on target like Rogue One, but crashed and burned like Porkins.
And can we Never, Ever, Ever mention the word or idea of Trauma in another Halloween movie Ever Again? I'm sick of that word, that idea, and that crutch used to try to make the movie and its characters full of Artful Relevance.
Halloween I and II showed Laurie Strode's and Loomis's trauma without getting too far into it. The Jamie series showed her's without making it a silent main characte. Even H2O evidenced it without making the movie about it.
Everyone has trauma and I'm over the Tell instead of the Show. What happened to Show Don't Tell for movies?
Some of the best, most focused scenes were cut from the movie and offered as extra scenes, such as Lonnie's encounter with Myers, which was A Great Scene. And Laurie Strode hearing Myers breathing when she called Karen. That worked.
But, they were sacrificed to go all over the place instead of Focusing the story and aligning the characters accordingly, which made for an extremely disjointed movie

  • @duddelove9229
    @duddelove9229 10 месяцев назад

One thing people haven’t noticed was Karen resembles Rachel Corruthers and Allyson resembles Jamie Lloyd. At the end of the movie they showed Allyson clutching a knife almost the same way Jamie Lloyd did in H4.
Those are some things they added to pay homage to H4 but nobody seemed to notice.

Also, literally Cameron saying “he’s haunted my family for 40 years” when his father just saw him for 10 seconds in 1978. That line just stretches credulity & the reality of how trauma operates to an absurd degree. As does so many other moments. It’s shit.

I agree with most of your review. I think the biggest thing that effected it was the time it was being made for obvious reasons and of course that really effected the decision making to what way they wanted to go. It could also have been similar to the many times we have seen movies and games go through developmental hell like Freddy vs Jason, Duke Nukem forever, Halloween The Curse of Michael Myers.and the list could go on. Instead of being held back for many years, we witnessed the issues on the final film as opposed to reading about and discussing it. I still really enjoy the film. Great review! I think DGG was going for a chaotic feel, that why at times the movie feels all over the place and that's why some characters don't make the best descions because they are caught up and thinking straight, but hey I love this movie still!!

Totally agree with thumbs down on H2O. It was Dawson’s Creek garbage when it came out and it hasn’t improved with age. A lame movie by people with no understanding of what made Halloween great, and no scares, and let’s face it that title was always stupid

My biggest problem with the trilogy is they want Michael to be supernatural but also human. He takes way more damage than any human could and survives starting in the original with being shot 6 times and getting up in seconds. Speaking of did the flashback have bullet holes in his suit with blood? How does he feel no pain when punched in the chest where he's littered with lead? How does he heal in a sewer if he's not supernatural? If he is supernatural how does the damage catch up with him to the point he's as weak as he is? DGG wanted to make him super powered and not on a whim to fit his scene and it doesn't work.

I think a lot of what this movie struggles with is that it's the middle movie of a trilogy. So it's trying to knit together the movies that come before and after. So they add in a lot of filler that just go nowhere and make no sense. And yes a lot of the writing had me like asking why. But it is my favorite version of Michael.

Halloween kills could of been the second best ever, the thing that knocks it down a few steps is the hospital scene, there was no need for it, or if so to be as long as it was. Take that out and the evil dies tonight and it would of been epic. The flashback though - one of the best opening sequences ever. Still a 7/10 for me never wavered on my score as it took 3 watches to get my head round the tracking lol

Personally, its easily my third favorite Halloween movie after 1978 and 2018. People chanting "Evil dies tonight" a few times, and the 5 minute Danny Devito sideplot doesn't change that for me. I also dont think the writing is any worse than any Halloween movie that came out after the original. Im not a big fan of any Myers sequel after Halloween 2, until this new trilogy.

The direction David Gordon Green took on all 3 of these movies was ridiculous. Overall, disappointing, predictable and making “ we the audience “ to suffer. What happened to suspense, pacing, character development and originality? 1978 will never be repeated again, John Carpenter created a timeless masterpiece for generations to enjoy.

Kills is VERY polarizing. When it’s Michael and just victims, the movie functions from cinematography to MUSIC to visual effects and suspense. But when it came to the treatment of these amazing actors and character backstory…it’s like a Saturday morning cartoon written by a teenager. Everything is melodramatic. Nobody has any logic and almost purposefully get themselves killed. You’re expected to be emotional and cry and feel weight, but it’s never totally earned. And the ending really disappointed me. Beautifully shot? Yes. Logical at all? Nope. And they tried to throw away the last 15 minutes of this movie during Ends. Nobody cares about Karen. Nobody talks about how he killed openly in the streets and nobody tracked him to the house.

To this day I wonder how it would have been if Paul Rudd wasn’t on the Ghostbusters movie during the same time, if things would be the same or slightly better.
I hated how they make such a hype with Lindsay and… that’s it? She survives, sure, but that’s it?
Still funny how the nurse from the first movie died in two different timelines, though “This is for Loomis” killed me. Like, does that mean Michael managed to kill Loomis after all or whatever else. I don’t know, Jim.
Compared to Ends, while the mantra and the mental patient being mistaken for Michael was tipping it for me to being meh, I am not going to be kinder to a movie that has Michael turning into Miyagi.

They made Tommy Doyle such a bitch in this movie. Think about it. He ran his mouth the whole movie and was all about handling business and taking out Michael. He rounded up the mob and he was the leader. But what did he do when it was time to handle business? He sat back and let 3 or 4 other people take a swing at Michael first. He shoulda been the first one to swing, and he shoulda been taking the most swings. I agree with him getting killed, but he died with no honor. When you’re leading a mob u should be first to take a swing and putting in the most work. And he shoulda stepped in and not let Karen get close to Michael . He shoulda said “I told you to go home!” Instead of sitting back and letting her stab him while he’s looking scared. Tommy got 2 hits in on Michael then Michael easily killed him. If Tommy woulda fought with courage and gave it his all, then it woulda meant something when he died. They completely wasted that character, along with wasting all the other OG characters they brought back. And then the way they tried to explain too much in this movie and tried to relate the movie to current events, nah bruh. Yal are forgetting what made Halloween scary to begin with.

People fr need to rewatch the old movies and tell me that this movie is any worse than anything from the thorn trilogy all the way to 2018.
Also anyone complaining about the dog is gonna get hit in the mouth. Shut up about the dog. He is like a father to me.
Also the complaint about the lack of the plot is kinda weak. I know most movies need a plot yes but let's be real we really wanted to just see Michael killing shit. The next movie (ends) has way too much plot.
The movie for me is 8.5 still. Loved it.

The flashback for me wasn't as good on rewatch knowing that the whole half-baked plot point that it was trying to establish wasnt further followed up on in ends and is barely followed up on in kills itself, the dialog is so damn bad but at times the bad dialog gives this film its charm, flipping the narrative from 2018 to kills of "he's just a man" to "with every kill he becomes something more" only for ends narrative of michael to be a mix of the two really hurt the trilogy a lot on rewatch. They never really establish what the story is that they were telling with this trilogy and each film feels like its own thing with the only connective tissue being the same characters.
The only strong scene for me was Cameron's death scene, the score the pacing, and just how much Michael was toying with Allison were all very well executed.
Despite all its flaws if you just want to turn your brain off and watch a fun nonsensical horror film this movie does that well. Id give it a 6 or 6.5 as well.

I think Kills is solid, was some of the dialogue corny? yeah, was the hospital story not great? yeah, and were there some plotholes like them not knowing which one was Michael? yes, regardless I still liked the movie.
Michael was awesome in this, his mask and the kills were great, my favorite scene were the 1978 flashbacks, and it was great to see Loomis back and the makeup they used looked amazing. The scene when Michael attacks Sondra and her husband was a great scene and the part where Michael was making his "art" scene as Sondra was watching Michael as he was stabbing her dead husband while she was bleeding was very eerie. Another favorite scene was the firefighter scene and Michael killing the mob and Karen at the end. The score was great again by John Carpenter and Daniel Davies and Cody Carpenter and also the movie has some really well shots of Michael throughout like the close up shot of him when he is about to kill tommy.
This movie was also my first Halloween movie I saw in theaters which was a great watch in the theater. 2018 was Laurie's movie and this one was sort of Michaels movie even though they say that its sort of the town of Haddonfield's movie.
They did sort of had Allyson as one of the main characters even though they did a bit much with Tommy and I did like Lonnie and Lindsey as they were the better returning characters in the movie. I also liked Big John and Little John, would like to see a full movie with those two. One more thing Hunters moon by Ghost was a great song.

When I first saw Halloween 2018 I assumed the sequel would be about the escaped patients running around on Halloween night. Almost like an anthology film. They still did that but not in the way I expected.
I wonder if Kills ending and the third one were changed because of the pandemic screwing up the production.

this movie is really stupid fun, which is EXACTLY what i want my slashers to be like. i like 2018 more as an overall movie, but as a slasher? kills takes the cake. won’t even talk about the last one in this trilogy…never been so disappointed by a movie before.

    • @ChuckM0503
      @ChuckM0503 10 месяцев назад

Slashers being stupid fun is fine for the most part. However, in this case, where DGG and company were making sequels to the original Halloween, which was much more about building tension, and Michael stalking his victims, I would have thought they were aiming for more then stupid slasher fun. Especially since that's what the franchise basically became and why they wanted to go back to the roots of the 78 original. They did a decent job in 2018, but went straight back off the rails again as many of the previous sequels had done before them.
