    This has been VERY helpful! I'm a 69 yo woman who tackles these jobs by myself. I love that you explain and demonstrate what's going on inside the outlet. I am an information junkie and I like to know all aspects of how something works and why. You have fulfilled my knowledge addiction very well! It also helps to retain the information when you see it demonstrated (very well too I might add). Thank you for your videos and I hope you continue making them in the future. I found your channel searching for a way to troubleshoot the lights on my pre-lit Christmas tree. That was a great video, however these lights are woven into the branches in such a crazy way that I gave up and just strung a set around like we used to do. Thanks again for all your excellent help!

    This was very enlightening. Our outlets maybe were cheaply installed when house was new in 1980.
    I found some little plastic adapter shims online that may solve my problem in some cases. Bending prongs on appliances can be hazardous - used this approach for a vac cleaner plug and eventually got a short and some pretty scary sparking

    Now as an electrician of forty years I'll give you my view. The real issue is a cheap outlet to start with. Home wiring is done at the lowest price possible. You can simply buy a better quality outlet or for the best a hospital grade outlet. They will be expensive but the first time you unplug a cord you'll find you really have to pull hard to get it to release. It's also never done in a good wiring job to use the outlet as a through connection. In other words even though the outlet has two screws on each side there is only a tiny link between the screws. For a quality wiring connection you twist both wires together and add a short third wire and a wirenut using the short stinger to connect to the outlet. This ensures a better connection down the line.

      I don't know your local restictions as they may require an electrician to do any electrical work. I will say that unless you have some experience in doing electrical work and at least a good meter and know how to check for voltage you'd be far safer to have someone who know what they are doing to replace the switch.@@joehyundaitech7961

      Thanks for the truth as I suspected . Just moved into a new senior apt. building and they bought everything as cheap as possible so now when (I volunteer) to vacuum the halls, the plug falls out of all sockets. I would pay for install of higher quality outlet but sure can't do it my little old self!😄. -Little Old Lady

      @haroldgreen1425 5 месяцев назад

      @@MegaLivingIt Go to the store and buy a plug tap. One of those cheap things you plug in that gives you a couple of outlets to plug into. Now with your hands or a pair of pliers spread the two pins that plug in a small amount. Test fit it. If necessary bend them out wider until you can just plug them into the the outlet. Once you get a tight fit then you can plug your vacuum into the tap and hopefully it will stay plugged in.

    The problem I have as a janitor is that some outlets at one account feel like the actual outlet isn't attached to the box. It actually wiggles away from the switch plate, and when I unplug a vacuum, the plug and outlet both feel like they want to come out of the wall as one unit.

      A few bucks and much better quality parts. Commercial grade will last longer. Next time you are in a home improvement store, pick up a residential in one hand and a commercial grade in the other and you will feel the difference there too.

    Would you answer a question? Just inside a door, there is an outlet. The outlet has one cable power cord plugged in and is unsightly. I just want it to go away. Is there a way to enclose the outlet and the big plug and cover with a removable plastic cover? None online seems large enough. Wish I could send you the pic. Really like your stuff.

    • @HowToHomeDIY
      @HowToHomeDIY  2 года назад +1

      I am not sure what it looks like but they do make plain box covers that are used for junction boxes. So could remove the wiring from the outlet, wire nut the wires and put a blank outlet cover on it. You just have to be able to access it so cant cover it up with sheetrock or anything. Thanks for the feedback Bill!

    Another factor in the looseness is the plug itself has been worn down. I've noticed non-polarized plugs tend to be looser simply because one blade is smaller.
