For me Roger is the best player of all time but some might disagree which is all good. But nobody can tell me that Federer is not the most skilled player of all time because that I won’t accept.
The best player of all time is clearly Djokovic, its not a matter of opinion or preference, but achievements. Federer is definitely the best to watch though for his beautiful tennis.
But check out his backhand winner at 4:41 -- it's well above his shoulder, and somehow he gets tremendous speed on the ball (similarly on preceding backhand). How he gets that much pace on a high one-hander, I wish I knew.
So happy you've added that backhand against Blake at 8:47! Always felt that one as one of the most difficult backhand he has ever hit from such a difficult position with power & precision... I believe this was his greatest backhand match ever... He played as if he had 2 forehands
Hehehehehehehe...that last comment on the half volley DTL backhand in the 2017 Miami final against Nadal never fails to crack me up. I mean, Roger's playing his "great rival" and at the time Nadal had 14 Slams to Roger's 18 and and the commentator says, "This is just stunning. You felt as though Nadal was just getting to grips with the rally...and he throws down one of those! Thanks for coming!" LOL! Listen, Slam titles don't matter to me at this point. Roger's the GOAT. Not only does he play sublime, ridiculous tennis, but there have been maches when he has outright shellacked Nadal and Djokovic. I can only come up with 1 time Nadal did that to Roger - on clay at RG in 2008 - and zero times Djokovic has done it. And Roger did it all with the "liability" of his "inferior" one-handed backhand. "Take a bow, Mr. Federer."
@@liamcannon9617 top 20?!? He is at worst in TOP 5 if not in TOP 3. It is not about the titles, money, fame etc. It is all about to stay human and be polite and respectful., when you already have all that. Like him. Respect!
Federer is the GOAT. It's not just about slams and stats. Roger has dominated Nadal and Djokovic many times in his career, outright embarrassed them even. Novak has never done that to Roger and Nadal only did it to Federer once at the 2008 French Open.
I've said this many times and I know a lot of the newer generation do not get it, because they didn't see it. However, before they made everything more or less common (same speed of court), and removing all of the fast courts, and doctoring the grass. Everything was done to kill serve and volley tennis. The only courts that didn't change were the slow clay courts. I would bet my life that had the courts not changed, not only would Roger have had many more Grand Slams, I seriously doubt if Rafa would have ever won Wimbledon on the regular, natural fast grass. Same with Novak. Even with the change, Roger did well, but then there's the age thing, with him being the oldest of the "big four" so naturally, he was going to decline as they were still peaking and again, the courts were changed to favor baseline tennis. That, plus racket technology, killed the net game. when you think of how early Roger took the ball, and you combine that with speed of court, in his prime, he would have been extremely difficult to beat, even by the rest of the big four at the time, because of physics. The swings of the others are just too big for the speed of the old courts. In closing, had they not touched the grass at Wimbledon, Roger would have won more there than Rafa did at the French, which of course, they didn't change, which is the reason that Rafa will hold that record for some time.
The bigger racquet has helped him alot. One wonders how many more titles he'd have won or not choked had he had it from the start. People forget he was using a much smaller racquet than the majority of the tour
What a collection of shots 👏 For me the two most memorable BH performances by Roger were '06 Shanghai against Blake and (of course) the '17 AO final against Rafa. But in general '06 & '17 Fed was something else!
I can't deny, Nadal has one of the best forehands but when it comes to single backhand, there is no doubt that Roger really perfected and clearly has the best single hand backhand. Its so powerful yet elegant, smooth and with a perfect aim. Probably one of the hardest ways to hit the ball if not the hardest and he makes it look so easy. 😀
