My first online encounter with Thomas Søndergård was a performance many years ago of Shostakovich's 11th Symphony on RUclips. (I regret that I don't recall the orchestra.) I thought "Who is this Mad Man?" Because I often think that only Mad people can evoke such an emotional response from an orchestra. At the time I wondered what such a conductor could do with the Minnesota Orchestra, although I loved Osmo and how he had raised the orchestra to yet another stunning level of quality. I sought out other videos with Søndergård and was never disappointed. Welcome, Thomas! And my heartfelt thanks to Osmo, who I regard as the best conductor to have graced Orchestra Hall's podium. It's awkward to really look forward to a new conductor when one has such respect for the outgoing conductor. I'm just grateful to have lived through this period of development with the Minnesota Orchestra and Vänskä's award-winning recordings.
