The trill from 5:30 to 5:49 always has me holding my breath. I would've given anything to see him perform live. I have a set of all 5 concerti performed live in Chicago I 1962 or thereabouts, & listen constantly. I believe Brendel is one of the first pianists/artists to perform Beethoven's music exactly the way it was written. I've got every cd set he had released, including the early VOX recordings.
I find almost any music performance exhilerating when then musician(s) have internalized the music & are really enjoying their own performance. It's an infectious quality that moves other people. I don't really know this piece, but it's obvious to me that the soloist is really enjoying it; & that draws me into the performance. Great majestic sound.
This is defenitily the most beautiful performance I`ve ever heard. Nobody else as a pianist can play so near to what Beethoven meant to tell us with his music as Alfred Brendel does: he is the greatest!
I love the way Tal Haim Samnon plays it, he also does something at the beginning which I think makes it sound great and I think that Beethoven meant for it to be played to way he did it, you should totally check it out
It does not matter who pays this conterto, if they play it reasonable well, it is a treat, especially this the third movement, where the whole thing sort of comes to crescendo well done Herr Beethoven!!!
Eric Day I believe Brendel's performances are especially entrancing. I don't care for the sound of Steinway pianos, they're too "crisp". The Bösendorfer piano had smoother sound to it. His earlier performances using this piano have an even more magical quality to them. He captures Beethoven's music the way it was written!
After coming back to the Emperor concerto after some time I have to say this is one of the best performances of this work I have heard - about the right balance between musicality and spirit. I had for some time rated the recording by Michelangeli/Giulini as the benchmark but after listening to this and others find Michelangeli plays the notes in the right order and produces an immaculate performance but it lacks the human element for me compared to this.
In this movement at the start you're somehow supposed to hold down the d and f notes with right hand (1 and 2 fingers) whilst doing the trill with 3 and 5 fingers....(B-flat and c) Clearly he dont do that in this performance, but are you meant to or not does anyone know? Because its very difficult to do it as Beethoven wrote, as I explained, take your 1 and 2 fingers off and it becomes no problem obviously. But because you're not supposed to pedal that part I guess you have to hold down the d and f whilst performing the trill.
It is hard to play that trill while holding down the D and F. When I play this, I play the first Bb-C iteration with 3-5 while holding down the D and F. I then release the D and F and finish the trill with 2-3. I do this because I'm not able to do a clean trill with 3-5. Krystian Zimerman and Friedrich Gulda both produce clean trills with 3-5 though.
Sam Kibler thanks, you do it the exact same way as me then... In his 4th piano concerto you have to play double note trills, no idea if they are supposed to be at the same rapid pace as a single note trill, but that would be impossible for me.
That's really the only way to do it, isn't it. And if you use a bit of pedal for that brief trill the d and f get their full value. The question is, is it "cheating" to use the pedal to hold a note while you take your finger off of it? Is it better to use pedal so you can freely rotate your wrist (with 3 and 5 on b-flat and c) thus achieving the brilliant, virtuosic flourish which Beeethoven obvioulsy wanted, or should one be an absolute purist (not to say pedant) hold 1 and 2 down while you try to trill, and wind up with some snaggle-toothed mess? Either way, there really are more important considerations in this piece.
Tanner DeHaan I disagree. Brendel is recognized as one of the first pianists to play Beethoven's music exactly as it is written. For a musician who was largely self-taught, that's a true accomplishment!
To play a wrong note is just an accident, but to play without expression, crescendo or character is a lack of judgement, feeling or attentiveness........Alfred Brendel
This is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, in my opinion. Perfection.
How did Beethoven create such awesome music?! And the interpretation is equally magnificent.
The best interpretation in my opinion, I do love Brendel.

Corry27 So true! I read that's what his intention was, to play Beethoven's music the way it was written. Brendel was largely self-taught!

Breath taking I’ve got goosebumps

That's really a wonderful interpretation with Masur and the great New-York Philharmonic Orchestra!- Many thank's: Ursula Bagdasarjanz
Wow! This is so powerful. Love it.
Thank you genius Ludwig and all his players as Brendel.
Beautiful performance my favourite Beethoven composition.
That conductor sure knows how to massage a great performance out of his orchestra.

Many thanks for the link.
Don't forget the Ashkenazy's performance in the same concerto
Que Maravilha

Why not use the sostenuto?
Just use the pedal for that part.
Un'escuzione magnifica, maestosa, padrona
can you upload the 2nd mvmt?
Beautiful
OMG!!!soo perfect!!
When you duplicating a stolen car key.
THANK YOU
Which year did Beethoven composed this concerto?
Great interpretation. I think Barenboim will always have the definitive rendition, though.

Finally
It's "Trolling All Over the Internet" by Maxmoefoe. But sadly the video's gone
2nd movement has been uploaded , it's a nice rendoring of it
Who noticed at 3:18 was the blue Danube Waltz by Strauss
I agree. Brendel can really attack Beethoven and doesn't have too! Maybe the Master is getting on in years.
Hi when did Beethoven composed the emperor?
1810!
soo perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 30, 1996.
does anyone else hear beethoven’s les adieux in this?? especially the 3rd movement
U r gay
I hate RUclips! Fancy sticking a bloody advert right in the middle of THIS!
Love your icon. Yummy.... lol
Errata: Kurt Masur

He kinda looks like John Williams
snobish New York audience doesn't even give him a standing ovation.
