  • Joshua Bell and Emanuel Ax perform "Spring Sonata" by Beethoven ‪@GreeneSpaceNY‬.
On June 7, 2022, friends, colleagues, and family members of WQXR host Bob Sherman gathered in the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space to celebrate his 90th birthday. The evening was filled with music, conversation, and tributes to this long time radio personality.
From giving now-world-renowned musicians their radio debut on The Listening Room, hosting the longtime-running popular Young Artists Showcase, and producing the award-winning folk series Woody's Children, Bob Sherman has worked with WQXR for over sixty years to bring exciting programming to your ears.
In this special program featuring renowned musicians including Joshua Bell and the Emerson String Quartet, you'll hear composer and former WQXR employee John Corigliano reminisce about the old days at the station, and longtime supporter of The Young Artists Showcase, Terry McGraw, speak about the impact of Bob’s work on young musicians.

Beautiful interpretation. I like Joshua Bell's friendly and non-arrogant way of telling the audience (after the first movement) that they are not supposed to applaud yet.

This is so beautiful I cannot say... these two are of course the most consummate professionals, and yet here they give us even more than we could dare to expect... such grace and dignity to this already sublime music... what more could we desire?

Even though the entire orchestra is in this pianist's heart, I think the he use too much right pedal ( especially chromatic scale or other scales).

That's Emanuel Ax, one of the greatest American pianists ever. His recordings of the Beethoven piano concertos w/Andre Previn are renowned and I consider them to be absolute best interpretations out there. He is a Beethoven specialist, and ironically is being more faithful to Beethoven's wishes by employing the damper pedal more than you may be accustomed to; that is precisely how Beethoven played himself.

It does sound flat, and a bit tired. The same is true for many warhorse violinists of his and more senior generations.
