I served in the military as a young Commisioned Officer when this man was the Army Chief Of Staff. He was one of the few senior officers we respected because of his knowledge, his fairness and honesty, and his character of speaking truth to power.Yes this cost him a lot in the Army but he never wavered unlike certain senior military officers we knew at the time. This man knew his stuff! It's because of the recognition of this sterling character that he was recalled from retirement at least twice to serve a national need even by those who weren't fond of him. In all cases, this man never campaigned for the positions which were foistered on him and was not even part of the leading circumstances. He answered those calls to prevent the nation from sliding into anarchy and needless bloodshed. If he is still in the news, it's because we find his character exemplary. Today our military is driven by ethnocentricity and not by effectiveness and efficiency. No wonder the military and the law enforcement agencies cannot get anything done.
