A harpsichordist with a complete understanding of his instrument's capabilities! Simple registrations let the music and sparkling interpretation shine. He knows that the silences are as important as the sounds.
Now THIS is how you gin up a ragtime arrangement on harpsichord. He knows the limitations of the plucked instrument and makes this arrangement sound extra special at the same time. I love the subtle changes, melody alterations, and sneaky 7th chords everywhere. Bravo.
I suddenly want to own a harpsichord. Not that I'd ever be able to play stride bass...but just to be able to say to my friends, "This is one of the coolest instruments ever and it was invented many centuries ago and I own one." :)
Just goes to show the ol' harpsichord is a capable instrument even with more jazzy tunes like the Charleston and the classic ragtime tune, the Entertainer. The purists might be seething, but I think it's amazing, and the sound is really crisp and clear. It's certainly brought a smile to my face, and you have a sincere thank you for sharing this with everyone!
This is taking a leaf from the book of the great organist E. Power Biggs, who recorded a vinyl LP of Joplin in the 1970s, played on a magnificent pedal harpsichord. Interestingly the LP did not include The Entertainer, but it is on a later CD re-release (on Sony). This is a freer interpretation, of course, but not necessarily any the worse for that. Very enjoyable!
I saw and listened Don Angle more than 25 years ago, within the William Dowd/Von Nagel Paris' workshop, playing a lot of "rag time" pieces on the last French double produced by this workshop. It was a real pleasure, and he dedicated to me two from its vinyl recordings I have still there. Nice time of a good "concert dans les copeaux" ! Sorry he's passed now !
I think this piece on a harpsichord sounds even better than on a piano it has a much more carnival and comedic feel (I mean that in a nice way btw). xXx
only part of this I raise my eyebrow at is the "Generic Music" at the end, it's stunning! I wish it had a name, or that there was more of it. Don't get me wrong I came here for the entertainer first and foremost, but that generic music was far from generic.
Agreed, I too wish to know more about it, it sounded vaguely familiar but that could just be my mind playing tricks on me, either way it's a great piece of music
that's amazing !. J'apprécie infiniment ce son du clavecin, qui est comme une sauce aigre-douce qui s'accomode bien avec la musique entraînante , franche, optimiste très américaine de l'époque Ragtime, Owh Yess !
You are a Fantastic Harpsichordist. youre sense of timing is brilliant you hit both hands at the exactly same instant it can only be done so well with lots of work. Also, youre trappings are perfect. I do play harpsichord too and I know how hard sometimes is to make perfection. You are a genious playing this amazing instrument.
I love that Christopher. Through the harpsichord, Scott Joplin has found his perfect instrument ! Did you listen the Elisabeth Chojnacka version with her gorgious 16' Sidey harpsichord ? That's lovely !
beautiful... I know that the Rag Time and Spain Music rendition on harpsichord lead to incredible sound and effects... I have performed the Rag Time on a Pedal harpsichord ... see Edward George Power Biggs on a pedal harpsichord on you tube ... splendid...
Nice Charleston after "The Entertainer"! Only thing that would have made the "Generic" music at the end better would be an accompaniment of Celtic drums, and maybe a few pipes.
But do you realize why they would be like "WTF"? It's because this a radically different style than they had back then, and it would have probably been extremely revolutionary if one could turn time back to perform a ragtime, or any modern form of music, in front of people in the 1400's
The Entertainer sounds really cool on the harpsichord!
I agree. The crisp attack of the harpsichord notes suits ragtime, I think
When it's 1705 and 1905 at the same time
Hilarious, love it
"the entertainer" was published un 1902
@Rockin Robin how. It's well known that's when it was published.
A harpsichordist with a complete understanding of his instrument's capabilities! Simple registrations let the music and sparkling interpretation shine. He knows that the silences are as important as the sounds.
Agreed.
Although 'inabilities' might be a better term.

I do agree! Don Angle was the real master of this. I do miss him and his wonderful playing.
First time I listen to "modern" tunes played in a harpsichord...
Me too
Debussy sounds pretty good on a harpsichord too
The harpsicord makes it more unique and cooler then when you play it on piano
I suddenly want to own a harpsichord. Not that I'd ever be able to play stride bass...but just to be able to say to my friends, "This is one of the coolest instruments ever and it was invented many centuries ago and I own one." :)
Sounds like a retro game theme
It does have a square wave quality
@@Degenerate_Gen harpsichord reminds me of MIDI
Best harpsichord rendition of Ragtime I've heard!
This is good, but I think E Power Biggs is better. Biggs is not taking so many liberties with the tune.
This piece sounds so good played on harpsichord like it was written for it instead of piano
LOL! I would love to have seen somebody whip this out in the 1400's, and watch everyone be like, WTF? !!! lol
What a wonderful reimagining, such precise execusion & understanding.
I just loved the ornamental effects and other added stuff that made it sound so good on an instrument it was not intended for.
In a parallel universe, this was the famous Super Mario Brothers theme tune from 1985.
Just goes to show the ol' harpsichord is a capable instrument even with more jazzy tunes like the Charleston and the classic ragtime tune, the Entertainer. The purists might be seething, but I think it's amazing, and the sound is really crisp and clear.

Seethe away purists-THIS IS MAGNIFICENT-I like the crisp attack of harpsichord it suits ragtime .
There are no 'ragtime purists'.
It isn't a 'pure' genre...
I loved doing this in music school!! It would get a few laughs from students and a few scornful looks from professors!
Don Angle played both Harpsichord & Accordion
A match made in heaven! It works so well! :)
I agree. In weird way I can imagine this music being in a Super Mario Bros. level.
the Harpsichord almost has the same attach of a cinema organ of thous days I love the Harpsichord in this kind of music it works...
What a magical and wonderful performance! 😃

I wish there was a video of the guy playing the Generic Music. It sounds like he's be rocking out proper.
How can I search for Generic Music? I can't find another one playing it.
Amazing. Thank you. Well done.
Brilliant performance!!!
I think that the Tetris and Super Mario theme song also would be nice on the harpsichord.
only part of this I raise my eyebrow at is the "Generic Music" at the end, it's stunning! I wish it had a name, or that there was more of it. Don't get me wrong I came here for the entertainer first and foremost, but that generic music was far from generic.

This is amazing, I'd like to hear it with a drum beat.
Very enjoyable, and well played!
I recommend you to play Super Mario Bros. 2 Overworld theme on Harpsichord
Thank ye
Three years hence since your suggestion. Hath the gentleman obliged?
I too would like to know
The man passed away...
that's amazing !. J'apprécie infiniment ce son du clavecin, qui est comme une sauce aigre-douce qui s'accomode bien avec la musique entraînante , franche, optimiste très américaine de l'époque Ragtime, Owh Yess !
This is so awesome I want to make a modern James Bond film with this kind of touch.
Congratulation! An original and witty performance of this tired piece (entertainer).
-dies of music awesomeness- Eargasm to the max!
Wow this is fantastic i love this tune it reminds me of the old super mario games. The tunes from it

Awesome
8 seconds into the song, and I've already 'favourited' it :D
I love that Christopher. Through the harpsichord, Scott Joplin has found his perfect instrument ! Did you listen the Elisabeth Chojnacka version with her gorgious 16' Sidey harpsichord ? That's lovely !
Excellent , beau travail !
Whats the name of the third piece this guy is playing? its absolutely amazing =)
Vraiment un instrument qu' il faut redécouvrir ! Je pense que nous n'avons pas tout étudié ! Qui s'y met ?
It really is called Generic Music! You can buy his arrangement at his site.
I think Generic Music is not an arrangement but an original composition of Mr. Angle.
nice work...excelente interpretación...
On the Charleston Theme, the harpsichord sounded like a piano being played at a saloon.
An awesome performance! Very well recorded as well, sounds great through a pair of AKG K240-M's
Unexpected, but really cool! Thanks for uploading!
beautiful... I know that the Rag Time and Spain Music rendition on harpsichord lead to incredible sound and effects...
I have performed the Rag Time on a Pedal harpsichord ... see Edward George Power Biggs on a pedal harpsichord on you tube ... splendid...
Kinda reminds me of Super Mario Bros. lol
lol.....what a fantastic idea, ragtime on harpsichord....amazing!!!!!
Beautiful sound

Thank God for Bart Cristofori.

verrückt was da manchmal unter ähnlichen Vidios steht^^
I love Generic Music, but I don't know how to find the original one :-(
Nice Charleston after "The Entertainer"!
Only thing that would have made the "Generic" music at the end better would be an accompaniment of Celtic drums, and maybe a few pipes.
It is as if Joplin wrote it for the Harpsichord
I just eargasmed
Maravilleux musique!!!!!
Exellent!
Today I played the harpsichord for the very first time, man, I should've played that.
Wow! Not even Elsbieta Choinaka plays the double thrillers! -)
the part starting at 2.01 is really good sounding
Aaaaaa aaaaaaaaa boli , boli .......,usi me bole od ovoga🤣😂

This is fun!
4:09 part... it reminds me of those old cartoons.... lol

imslp.org probably has free scores of a lot of Joplns music (and a bunch of other composers as well).
DUDE YOU ROCK SO HARD!!!!!!!! :D
Super cool
Somebody missed the"like" button. :)
8-bit entertainer
James P Johnson
3:55 Charleston 1925
remind me of a level in nes game zanak lol
Amazing! The harpsichord requires more precision than the piano, and it is just amazing how clean sounding you play!
Bach will like this.....
Mario too :D
If your referring to the song writer, you're wrong. That would be Scott joplin
I wonder how J.S. Bach would have liked this :D
Lol this is amazing
it´s very FUNNY!!!!!....
Sounds like something Lurch would play for Morticia and Gomez.
Somehow sounds kinda like a videogame
A “bourdon” at the end. ?Couperin?
Scott Joplin missed his calling... he should have been an harpsichordist!
Nah
hmmm... most cool. Where might the sheet music be obtained? :)
Bach would tap his foot to this
Harpsichord sounds like a midi machine
Incapable of expression.
noice.
But do you realize why they would be like "WTF"? It's because this a radically different style than they had back then, and it would have probably been extremely revolutionary if one could turn time back to perform a ragtime, or any modern form of music, in front of people in the 1400's
By the way I can see this, Bach had some spare time on the harpsichord. :)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, aka the old chap.
